Fife And Drum Corps Holds
Forty-Second Annual Dinner
Maple Grove Fife and Drum Corps, one of the oldest organizations of its
kind in the State, met Saturday night at Maple Grove Methodist Church
Hall for its 42nd annual dinner. The Corps was organized in 1900 by
Major Al Rood who had been an officer in the Union forces during the
Civil War. Besides drawing the musically inclined men of the community
closer together, its purpose was to
play the old Civil War melodies ex-
clusively at Memorial Day services
in rural cemeteries in memory of
the heroes of that great war.
Although its members now are
scattered over a large area and
many of its former comrades are
dead, the corps assembles every
year, as it has for the past 42, for
an annual dinner and on Memorial
Day every year plays in a dozen or
more Back Mountain cemeteries.
Those members present were: A.
M. Wilkinson, C. H. Wolfe, Albert
L. May, Eugene F. May, Otis A.
Rood, Charles Rood, George May,
