The Friendship Class of the Meth-
odist Church met, at the church on
Tuesday evening with 40 present.
Miss Blanche Atherholt, president,
presided.
Miss Margaret Sutliff of Carver-
ton Road is a patient at the Gen-
eral Hospital.
Miss Katharine Ward and Miss
Marie McGrath of Harrison, N. J.,
spent the week-end at the Ward
home on Cliffside avenue.
Miss Betty Owens spent a week
at home with her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Harry Owens. Betty is a senior
at West Chester State Teachers Col-
lege.
Mrs. Grover Stock has been sub-
stituting at the Township High
School for Thomas Carle who has
been ill for the past two weeks.

Basil Coleman of Rice street is a
patient at the Nesbitt Hospital.
On Thursday evening Rev, Robert
Coward of Ashley preached at the
Lenten service at the Methodist
Church. Rev. Harry Savacool preach-
ed at the Forty Fort Methodist
Church the same evening. This is
part of a general exchange of min
isters of the Methodist churches of
the Wilkes-Barre District during
Lent, for the Thursday Lenten ser-
vices. Next Thursday evening Rev.
Savacool will exchange with Rev.
Wilbur C. Dodge of the Derr Memor-
ial Methodist Church in Wilkes-
Barre.
Sam Silverman received painful
injuries Sunday morning when he
fell down the cellar steps at his
home on Holly street.

is their second child. Mrs. Gavigan

Mrs. Mathilda Owens is ill at the
home of her son and daughter-in-

Leo Miller is visiting his sister in
Newark, N. J.
Mi. and Mrs. William Thomas of
Mz street, announce the birth of a
son. This is their sceond child, both
are boys.
Mr. and Mrs. Clark Diltz have
cold their home in Shavertown and |
moved to Berwick.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jackson of
Bridgeport, Conn., are spending sev-
eral days with relatives in Shaver-
town.
Betty Jane Fink To
Wed Stanley Henning
Announcement has been made of
the engagement of Betty Jane Fink,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford H.
Fink of Lehigh street and Stanley
Philip Henning, son of Mr. and Mrs.
S. R. Henning of Harris Hill Road,
Trucksville. Betty is a graduate of
Kingston Township High School,
Wilkes-Barre Business College and is
employed in the credit office at
Bergman's. Stanley was graduated
from Kingston Township High
School and Bucknell University and
is employed as mechanical engineer
for Bethlehem Steel Company at
Buffalo. No date has been set for
the wedding.
Calendar Of Events
At St. Paul's Church
A Christian flag and an American
flag will be placed in the chansel of
St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Shav-
ertown, and dedicated at the 11
o'clock service Sunday morning. The
beautiful symbolism of the flags will
be explained during the service.
These flags are the gift of Richard
Disque, Dallas funeral director. Lu-
ther League devotional meeting will
be at 7:15 and evening service at
8:00. At the evening service the
first of a series of sermons on the
minor characters in the Passion his-
tory
subjectwill be Ciaiphas, high priest.
Familiar hymns will be sung.
At the midweek Lenten service,
Wednesday evening at 7:45 the sec-
ond of a series of sermons on, “Sins
That Crucify Christ” will be deliv-
ered. This week's subject will be
“Covetousness”.
Ladies Auxiliary will meet on
Thursday during Lent. This week's
meeting will be at 1 o'clock.
Luther League Meets
At St. Paul's Church
Luther League of St. Paul's Lu-
theran Church of Shavertown held
their meeting in the social rooms
of the church Monday evening with
Bernard Jones, president, in charge.
Rev. Herbert E. Frankfort offered
prayer. Members were urged to
bring to the next meeting articles
to make up boxes for boys in the
service. Present were: Doris Mae
Hontz, Betty Hontz, Laura Adler,
Ruth Adler, Bernard Jones, Herbert
Boline, Donald Boline, Drina Welch,
Jack Kitchen, Arthur Kitchen, How-
ard Traver, Paul Winter, Willard
Lozo, Fred Johnson, Ralph Williams,
Jack Mason and Rev. Frankfort.
Appears In Motion Picture
Robert Appleton, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Howard Appleton of Shaver-
town, appears with the 9th Infantry
Band at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, in
the Warner Brothers motion picture,
“Men In White” which will be re-
leased shortly throughout the East.
Appleton, a talented musician, has
been a member of the band since
his induction into service more than
a year ago.
Township Graduate Is
Honored At Shower
Beatrice Hildebrant was hostess
at a shower honoring Geraldine Jo-
seph, bride-elect, at her home in
East Dallas on Sunday. Miss Joseph,
a former resident of East Dallas, now
of Wilkes-Barre, will marry George
Espy of Kingstor shortly. Of the en-
tire class of 1939, Dallas Township
High School, all of whom were in-
vited, only ¢ne, Mrs. Edward Sid-
orek, remained in this territory to
attend. Many of the others are
either in the service of Uncle Sam
or working in defense plants
throughout the country. Present at
the shower were: Mrs. William Cob-
leigh, Mrs. George Snyder, Mrs.
Ralph Whipp, Mrs, Edward Sidorek,
Miss Adelptha Miller, Miss Marilla
Martin, Marion, Francis, Jean Hilde- |
brant and the hostess.

Miss Mabel Rogers Is
Engaged To Nile Hess
Mr. and Mrs. Dorey Rogers of
Orchard Farm, Dallas, have an-
nounced the engagement of their
daughter, Mabel, to Nile Hess, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Hess of
Kunkle.
Miss Rogers is a Senior at the
Dallas Township High School. Mr.
Hess is a graduate of the Dallas
Township High School with the
Class of 1939, and the Coyne Elec-
trical School in Chicago. He is now
employed in the Electrical Depart-
ment of the Bethlehem Steel Corpo-
ration, Steeleton, Pa. No date has
been set for the wedding.
Schedule Of Events At
White Church On The Hill
“Laymen’s Sunday” will be ob-
served at the White Church on The
Hill on Sunday evening at 7:30. Lay
Leader Thomas Ayre will be in
charge of the service and Prof. Frank
Walp of Forty Fort High School will
be the speaker. This is a nation-
wide observance by all Methodist
churches. At the 10:30 a. m. service
the pastor will continue the series
of sermons on “The Life and Teach-
ings of Christ” with a sermon on,
“The Great Crisis”.
On Friday evening, February 20,
"at 6:30 the Every Member Canvas-
sers who are to take the annual
Every Member Canvass on Sunday
afternoon will meet for a supper
meeting for instruction and assign-
ment.
The monthly business and social
meeting of the Methodist Youth
Fellowship will be held at the church
on Tuesday evening at 8:00 o'clock.
All young people are invited.
The annual Father and Son ban-
quet will be held on Wednesday eve-
ning at 6:30. Rev. Harry Thompson,
pastor of the Central Methodist
Church of Wilkes-Barre, will be the
speaker.
The Women’s Society of Christian
Service will meet at the church on
Thursday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock.
Lenten service on Thursday eve-
ning at 7:30 with Rev. Wilbur C.
Dodge, pastor of Derr Methodist
Church, Wilkes-Barre, as speaker.
St. Paul's Brotherhood
Will Hear Yeosock
Michael Yeosock, clerk of the
courts of Luzerne County, will be
speaker at the meeting of the
Brotherhood in St. Paul’s Lutheran
Church, Monday evening. Men of the
community are invited to attend.
Doris McCarthy Hostess
To Pi Mu Members
Miss Doris McCarthy was hostess
to members of the Pi Mu musical
society at her home on Lehman ave-
nue Saturday afternoon. Business
meeting was conducted by the pres-
ident, Ann Emery, and plans for the
rest of the season outlined. Study
was made of Russian and German
music and illustrations played by
Louise Hazeltine and Doris. Others
present were Nancy Swartz, Janet
Post, Ann Emery and Mrs. Wesley
Oliver.
Bundles For America
Meet At Robinson's
Mrs. Thomas Robinson was host-
ess to workers of the Bundles for
America at her home in West Dal-
las Monday afternoon. Sewing was
combined with a birthday celebra-
tion for Mrs. Oswald Griffiths. Pres-
ent were: Mrs. Peter Clark, Mrs. Ma-
chell Hildebrant, Mrs. Henry Peter-
son, Mrs. Gerald Dettmore, Mrs.
Floyd Chamberlain, Mrs. M. J.
Brown, Mrs. Griffiths and Mrs. Rob-
inson.

Entertains Connie Moore
Irvin C. Davis, son of Postmaster
and Mrs. Irvin C. Davis of Shaver-
town is pictured in the February
10th issue of the Salt Lake City Tel-
egram with Constance Moore, pop-
ular screen actress. The three-col-
umn picture carried the overline:
“Army life is a pretty fine business
at times like these.” Irvin with two
comrades escorted the attractive
young actress during her recent vis-
it to Camp Douglas where she enter-
tained for the U. S. O. Luckier than
his companions, the Shavertown sol-
dier also had dinner with the Holly-
wood star.
Knecht Promoted Again
New sergeant chevrons glistened
on the uniform sleeves of William
G. Knecht at Gowen Field, army air
base near Boise, Idaho, recently.
Sgt. Knecht is the son of Mr. and
Mrs, Ray Knecht, Church street, Dal-
las. He is a personnel clerk in his
squadron headquarters at the Idaho
air base.
Knecht, who has been in the army
since June 1941, also is a star on
his company’s basketball team.
This is the second promotion for
the young man within the past few
months.
Made Staff Sergeant
Donald Bulford, son of Robert Bul-
ford of Trucksville, has been pro-
moted to Staff Sergeant in the Air
Corps. Don is stationed with a school
squadron at Wichita Falls, Texas.
He enlisted last year and hasn't
been home since he left Trucksville.

Every one is thankful that the
fire at Isaacs Store Sunday morning
was discovered in time to avert
what might have been a real dis-
: aster. Girl Scouts and kindly neigh-
bors assisted Mr. and Mrs. Dodson
in cleaning up the damage from
smoke in the store and dwelling.
Sherry Nulton is convalescing at
home after a recent appendicitis op-
eration.
Word has been received from
Hans Kramer in San Francisco that
he thanks every one who sent him
birthday cards recently. He plans to
write soon.
Miss Dorothy Weaver entertained
her Sunday School Class at her
home Saturday afternoon. Valen-
tines were exchanged. Present were
Wilma Hess, Mable Miller, Phyllis
Kunkle, Joan Kunkle, Nancy Par-
sons, Shirley Martin, Mabel Parsons
and Charlotte Boston.
George Race Is Made
Sergeant In Air Corps
George S. Race who was made a
corporal only in September, has
been given the rating of sergeant
in the army air corps at Albuquer-
que, N. M. George is the son of Mrs.
Laverne Race and a graduate of
Hershey Industrial School. He en-
listed in his country’s service a
year ago last September, and was
graduated from Chanute School in
Illinois. He has just recently been
transferred from Barkdale Field to
Albuquerque.
