    Ruxiliary Police
Being Organized
Men Will Rid During
Defense Emergencies
Chief Ira Stevenson of Harvey's
Lake Police Force, Francis McCarthy
of Kingston Township and represen-
tatives of other Back Mountain law
. enforcement agencies were among
those who attended the police chiefs’
meeting in Wilkes-Barre Tuesday
when Chief Russell Taylor of
Wilkes-Barre, head of District 2,
outlined plans for an auxiliary po-
~ lice organization to serve voluntar-
ily in Civilian Defense in Luzerne
County.
Volunteers are likely to be called
upon for service when regular uni-
formed men are detailed to take
care of emergency situations in oth-
‘er communities or areas than their
own.
The volunteers will receive their
CA Bie commissions, badges and cards from
the State as soon as they have been
approved by local police chiefs.
Those who wish to apply for the
positions may do so by getting in
touch with the police chiefs in their
community.
Hundreds Skate
AtHarvey's Lake
Completely Frozen;
Lake Is Free Of Snow
With the exception of a 15 by 20
‘oot open spot in front of Lakeside
Inn at Warden Place, Harvey's Lake
is completely frozen over daily pro-
viding the best skating in years for
undreds of winter sports enthusi-
‘asts from Wyoming Valley and sur-
rounding areas.
Except for a few places where
the ice froze before the recent heavy
snowfall, the surface is completely
free from snow, most of the ice
having formed during the zero tem-
peratures of the past week.
On Sunday Chief Ira Stevenson
of the Harvey's Lake Police force
estimated 400 skaters took advan-
tage of the fine skating in spite of
the severe cold. Traffic on the Lu-
zerne-Harvey’s Lake highway was
the heaviest of the winter season
with outdoor sportsmen. Between
150 and 200 skaters have been at
the lake each night this week. Best
skating appears to be at the Alder-
son and bridge ends.
Injures Nose
When Harley Mission Jr., of
Shavertown attempted to leave a
‘room in which he had just put out
‘the light, his face came in contact
with a door casing. Now he is fol-
lowing a crooked nose.
