NOW READ THE LAST CHAPTER BELOW
“Yes, within a few hours you can
leave this hated place.”
Charles snatches up his telescope and sees
some French warships approaching. He realizes
that his enemy de Ribaud has managed to send
off a signal. Nevertheless, he prepares to put up
a fight. But first, he bitterly tells Marianne that
now she is free of him. She will be able to return
to France—alone as he has saved them.
“Don’t you see? He’s your leader. Go
er to him.’
But from the priest, Marianne learns that |
Charles is down at the water’s edge, agreeing
to surrender to de Ribaud if the latter will agree
not to cause bloodshed and demolish the colony.
Immediately, she rallies the colonists to his
defense. They must all help to save her husband
ERE
“And to you, Citizen de Villiers, 1
? present the flag of the Republic.”
The men respond to her ringing words but at
the very moment when battle seems imminent,
the Commandant of the ships offers wonderful
news to all. The French Revolution has taken
place and now France is a republic. All of the
Colonists including Charles are freed from
their sentences.
“I want to be here with you Charles
—forever.”
Marianne, witnessing this, starts up the hill,
lonely and forlorn. Now surely, Charles no
longer needs her. But suddenly he is there and
he takes her in his arms. Then, once again they
kiss and this time, Marianne knows that they
face a happy life together in the new land of
liberty, equality and justice.
