It was a dark and stormy night,
~ with the rain turning into sleet,
‘and everyone was hurrying some-
place. That was Thursday night,
- January 14, 1937.
~ Ten men with a very definite pur-
pose in their hearts were also hur-
rying towards the St. John’s alleys.
In one group were Captain Jack
Ondish with Kurpis, “Red” Rinks,
Joe Gurnari, and Jack Kovacs. At
the alleys they were met by re-
enforcements, John Rahl, Larry
Carr and Nick Trusky.
From the other section came Cap-
tain John Sobeck with Felix Sav-
- age, Frank Bizup, Frank Rinks, Mike
. Balogh and Frank Tracy. Pete Pa-
luck the Old Iron Horse was late.
Silently they filed into the build-
. ing, with not one person uttering
a word. Old Man Best was waiting
for them in his Judge’s chair. The
clock chimed the hour. It was eight
o'clock. Time to start. Who were
these men ?
Jack Ondish led his boys for
Buddies’ Men’s Shop. Jack Sobeck

procession once more was on its

Buddies had won, taking all three
games and climbing into the secur-

_ By an eight to two vote, the Mer-
chants’ League has elected to carry
its season schedule on into another
~ round of nine weeks. This will bring
all leagues to finish at the same
time. The dissenting votes were
cast by Blight Bros. and Spinicci
Garage.
' The American Bowling Congress
Bulletin has cited the Times Major
League of Scranton for their pin
busting achievement. Our own
Wyoming Valley Association offi-
cials seem to be asleep in watching
the pin busting activities of the lo-
cal bowlers. The city association
just lets things drift along.
Here is one for you. A bowler
got nine and a half pins on his
first shot. He left the lower half
of the five pin standing. In his
next shot he got the other half to
make his spare.
‘What's the best way to teach a
girl how to bowl?
You stand very close behind her,
and, holding her wrist with your
~ hand, you guide all her move-
ments—.
Aw, cut it out. It's my sister.
Oh, give her a book of instruc-
tions.

Bowling League
Extends Season
New Schedule Prolongs
Season Until May 22
At a recent vote of the teams of
the West Side Merchants’ Bowling
League it was decided to extend the
bowling season another nine weeks.
The old schedule called for March
20 as the final night of the season.
The new schedule will make May 22
the final night. This scheme will
bring all leagues using the St.
John’s alleys to an end at about the
same week.
In the week’s games, Spinicci
Garage continues to take over all
opposition and annexed four points
from the St. John’s Holy Name.
Luzerne Anthracite lost one game to
the Larksville Orioles. Ben Sterling’s
made a clean sweep of their series
with the Bileggi Cafe, taking all
three games. Grablick Dairy gave
the Lipo Insurance a three point
lacing and Blight Bros. took two
games from the Buddies. J. Shinko
and Baker of the Sterling team took
all high scoring honors for the
league.
Buddies Continue
Upward Climb
Jump Three Points In
Triumph Over Cigarmen
The teams of the Luzerne Junior
Bowling League are closing up the
gaps in their point separations.
Buddies’ Juniors have again ad-
vanced three points on the leaders
when they took two games from the
General Cigar Boys. Quarteroni
Bros. had a tough session with the
Central Cafe but emerged the vic-
tors with a three point tally in their
favor.
The loss dropped the Central Cafe
into third place. Kelly St. Market,
by taking three points from Al's
Barber Shop, jumped into second
place. Ferraro Truckers took two
games from the Mullay Shoe Re-
pair Girls.

BOROUGH CLAIMS GAME BUT
HERRING MAY BE NECESSARY
The outcome of the scheduled
Laketon-Dallas Borough game last
Tuesday night, claimed by the borough on a forfeit, may have to await a
meeting of League officials. J. A. Martin, supervising principal at Kingston
Township and president of the League, said yesterday he hesitated to
discuss the game until all sides had been heard fully, and intimated that
it might be better if representa-
tives of all teams met to decide the
question.
Laketon requested a postpone-
ment of the game on Tuesday, claim-
ing illness had weakened its line-up.
Dallas Borough, which already has
two games to make up at the end of
the regular season, declined to agree
to a postponement.
The usual crowd gathered to see
the game and when the Laketon
quintet did not appear the Dallas
five took the floor and sunk a bas-
ket. Then the money was returned
to members of the audience and the
borough claimed a victory.
Since there are five teams in the
league, all with responsibility for
observing rules common to all, it
is likely a decision will be referred
to a gathering from all schools and
that the two teams involved will ac-
cept the decision of the majority.

In Important Contest
The second half of the
Back Mountain League season
will open with a loud bang to-
night when Dallas Township,
which slipped down into sec-
ond place this week, clashes
with the league-leading Dallas
Borough quintet in a game
which may very well decide the
league championship.
The township and borough
have been engaged in a neck-
and-neck race all season. Their
latest tie was broken on Fri-
day night, when Lehman pull-
ed a surprise and toppled the
seemingly invincible township quin-
tet, 22 to 21. Dallas Township has
been defeated only twice this season,
and both times by a one-point mar-

Kingston Township Loses
Kingston Township bowed to Dal-

points for the losers.
On Tuesday night Kingston Town-

tie with Dallas Borough. ;
