Kitchen Succeeds

Shavertown Volunteers
Name New Officers;
To Decorate Home
Byron Kitchen was elected presi-
dent of Shavertown Volunteer Fire
Co. at its meeting in the fire house
on Monday night, with about 40
members present.
Other officers named are: Howard
Isaacs, vice-president; William Cob-
leigh, secretary; John Miles, treasur-
er; Dan Evans, financial secretary;
Clarke Diltz, trustee; George Still,
chief.
Retiring officers are Willard Gar-
ey, president; G. R. Downer, George
Prater, L. T .Schwartz, Willard Lozo
and George Still. Clarke Diltz suc-
ceeds L. T. Schwartz on the board
of trustees, following 13 years in
that office. Other trustees are Her-
man VanCampen, Cliff Lawley, Stan-
ley Davis and Harold Lloyd.
Francis Youngblood was named
chairman of a committee to deco-
rate the front of the fire house for
Christmas. An effort will be made
by the trustees to have all money
due the company paid before the
books are audited by Stanley Davis,
Fred Malkemes and Clarke Diltz in
January.
Mr. and Mrs. Prynn Mark
Wedding Anniversary
Mr. and Mrs. Willard Prynn of
Carverton were hosts to friends and
family on Saturday night in ob-
servance of their 32nd wedding an-
niversary. Mrs. Prynn was Daisy
Wilson of Dallas before her mar-
riage. For many years Mr. Prynn
has been associated with the Jer-
myn Green Coal Co. and is known
as a booster of sports for the young
men of the community.
Those attending were: Mr. and
Mrs. Chester Glahn, Mr. and Mrs.
Bert Polhamus, Mildred and Jean
Durland, Mr. and Mrs. Stacey Dur-
land, Mr_ and Mrs. Sheldon Prynn,
Mr. and Mrs. Glendon Prynn, Mr.
and Mrs. Richard Prynn, Mr. and
Mrs. Willard Prynn, Adeline, Mar-
jorie and Mary Alice Prynn.
Missionary Group To Give
Baskets To Needy
The Young People’s Missionary
Society of the Free Methodist
Church met Monday night at the
home of Mrs. Harvey Averett and
decided to give baskets to needy
families in the community at
Christmas. Rev. Herbert Olver,
Miss Norma Walters, Arminta Smith |§
and Phillip Mosier were named
members of a committee to plan |}
for the contributions.

Mrs. John Engler will be host to
the Keller Class of Shavertown
Methodist Church at her home on
Friday night. Mrs. George Still,

is ill at his home.

Royal Line, Jr., motored to Phila-
delphia last Sunday.
Postmasters in Trucksville and
Shavertown request residents to do
their Christmas mailing early and
avoid the rush.
Mrs. Howard Patton was host
Thursday afternoon at her home to
the Women’s Home Missionary So-
ciety. A Christmas program was
enjoyed.
Miss Ruth Evans of Harrisburg is
visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
David Evans of Carverton Road.
Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Olver of En-
dicott, N. Y., visited Rev. Herbert
Olver over the week-end.
Mrs. Frank Gordon of Luzerne,
formerly of Shavertown, is recov-
ering from injuries received in an
automobile accident several weeks
ago.

Hill Road is ill at her home.
William Ayers is rapidly improv-
ing from hs illness.
Albert Williams delighted every-
one with the colored moving pic-
tures he showed at the young peo-
ple’s annual hobby social in the
Huntsville Methodist Church on
Wednesday night.
Mrs. Howard Frantz is reported
improved following an operation in
General Hospital, Wilkes-Barre, last
Tuesday.

AVERETT FINDS FOUR
BEARS WATCHING HIM
One local hunter did not have
the same opportunity as the
colored preacher who prayed
“Lord, if you can’t help me,
don’t help that bear!”
Harvey Averett, Sr., was
hunting deer in the Noxen sec-
tion and while on watch for a
deer turned to see a female
bear and three cubs a short
distance away and coming to-
wards Mr. Averett.
When Mr. Averett raised his
gun, the bears detoured with-
out any fuss and passed out of
sight.
Services At St. Paul's
“Discouraged ? What Then?”
will be the subject of Rev. Herbert
E. Frankfort’s sermon at 11 Sunday
morning at St. Paul's Lutheran
Church. Luther League devotions
will be at 6:45. A candlelight Christ-
mas service will be held at 7:30,
with Rev. Mr. Frankfort delivering
an appropriate message.
New Bulletin Board
St. Paul’s Lutheran Church has
expressed its appreciation for a gift
of a new announcement board, do-
nated by Sheldon Fahringer and
Newton Ness, who have erected the
board in front of the church.
Dymond Still In Hospital
William Dymond is still at Gen-
eral Hospital, where he has been
convalescing from a broken leg. It
was hoped he would be able to come
home after the weights were remov-
ed on Tuesday but it is likely he
may have to stay at the hospital
a little while longer.

At Trucksville Church
The calendar of events at Trucks-
ville Methodist Church, where Rev.
Harry Savacool is pastor, has been
announced as follows: Sunday,
9:30, church school; 10:30, morning
worship, Christmas music; sermon,
“Except Ye Believe in Man!’; 6:45,
Epworth League; 7:30, evening wor-
ship, Christmas play under the di-
rection of Mrs. B. Aubrey Ayre;
Thursday, 7:15, church study night.
High School Quintet
Wins Its First Game
Kingston Township High School’s
boys’ team defeated Wyoming High
School on Tuesday night, 24 to 22,
on the local court. In a preliminary
game the scrubs lost to Wyoming,
32 to 12.
The girls’ varsity played its first
game with Wyoming Seminary on
Wednesday afternoon.
Quarterly Meeting
Begins At Trucksville
The District Quarterly meeting
is being held in the Trucksville
Free Methodist Church, continuing
until Sunday night, with the ex-
ception of Saturday.
Rev. A. K. Lindsley, district elder,
will preach, and Hugh Lucas of
Ulysses will be soloist and song
leader. The schedule for Sunday:
Sunday School, 9:30; preaching, 11;
Holy Communion; service of hymn
song, 7:30, followed by an evange-
listic service ‘and a sermon by Rev.
Mr. Lindsley at 8. The public is in-
vited.

Rev. Russell J. May, pastor of
Shavertown Methodist Church, has
announced the following services for

men’s choirs.
