As long as the timber lasted he was a leading lumberman of the region. ‘When the timber and the tannery were gone, and the people had to turn their attention to other means of earning a livelihood, he equipped his farm with a large herd of cattle, and began to produce milk on a big scale. He established the Standard Dairy in Wilkes-Barre, and for many years this was one of the leading distribu- tors of milk in Wyoming Valley. Ev- erybody in Kunkle went into the dairy business, and the Standard Dairy bought their milk, giving them 3% cents in summer and 4% cents in win- THE DALLAS POST ter, at a time when milk retailed for Seeman Hoover, Henry Hoover, George 8 cents a quart in summer and 9 cents in winter.. Money poured into the community, and the improvements so conspicuous in the village today are the result of that period of prosperity. Besides his dairy interests, he raised a fine breed of Normandy horses which were appreciated and admired wherever seen. Besides his two sons, Philip Kunkle had four daughters: Maria, who mar- ried Simeon Spencer; Sally Ann, who married Rev. John P. Rice; Lydia, who married William Allen; and Jemima, who married Abram Ryman, The Kunkle family is largely Demo- cratic politically, and most of the de- scendants lean to the Methodist faith religiously. Kunkle supplied a goodly number of soldiers for the Civil War—Charles Kunkle, John Kunkle, Joseph Hoover, Hoover, Marcellus May, Samuel Lozo, Aaron Moss, Wesley Moss, Dwight Woolcot, Vester Shoemaker, Oliver Fisher, John Beam, Jefferson Miers, Isaac Huey, Charles Oakley, Spencer Hunt, John Evans and John King. Charles Kunkle and Joseph Hoover belonged to the famous 143rd regi- ment which fought at Gettysburg, where the former was wounded. Jo- seph Hoover fought there with distin- guished valor, rescuing the beautiful silk flag that was presented to the boys by the women of Wilkes-Barre. The following poem was written by Miss Anna E. Kunkle in memory of his heroism, and was published in the Wilkes-Barre Record at the time of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. JOSEPH HOOVER Kunkle a hero has? That's fine! FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER :, 1938 Let’s pass the word along the line, Hoover by name, first name Joe. Where her crystal brooks do downward flow, From her greenwood hills, a boy he played, Climbed the mountains and killed and flayed, Rough Ilumber-jacks tought him to fight, He learned it well, wight His tightened brow and bulldog jaw Did yield to naught but love and law. When word was passed from mouth to mouth, the wild young John Brown lay dead South— in the sunny That insult had been offered there To our dear flag, “Old Glory”, where | Fort Sumter stands,—Joe dropped his axe, PAGE SEVEN S——————————————— And swelled the crowd, his wrath did wax, As down he marched to join the throng, 143rd took him along. At Gettysburg on July one, The battle then had but begun, Crippen, a boy, the colors bore, Just turned nineteen, but little more, A target for bullets, One went through And he dropped to earth in his coat of blue. Joe loved the lad, and loved the stars And the thirteen stripes that cost men The wild, victorious rebel yell Stung like a snake. As Crippen fell, Mad with rage, he gave a bound, And reached the spot on the hard fought ground, The standard! snatched,—the tattered rag That once had been a silken flag, And, raising high the rescued staff, With long and loud derisive laugh, Flaunted it there the “rebs’” to flout; They tried right hard to put him out, But when night dropped with gentle grace, The flag and Joe were both in place. At home in peace since ’65 On a hillside farm. Yes, still alive. And comrades old remember well ‘What Hoover did when Crippen fell. When Pennsylvania collected the Civil War flags of the State, to put them into the State House at Harris- burg, it was necessary to cut off a piece of the staff of that of the 143rd regiment, This was presented to the post and a gavel was fashioned from it, which was always used at their meetings. When this gavel was ded-. icated, the heroism of Joseph Hoover, in rescuing the flag at Gettysburg, was mentioned in the address by the ora- tor of the occasion. «—+ WEEKLY BUSI NESS REVIEW +—- won LOUIS 5% EPSTEIN Clothier, Hatter, Furnisher! 70 E. Instead of having the customary sea- sonal business spurt last fall, the country entered a new depression which persisted for 10 months. Not until July, 1938, did the clouds begin to lift. Further clearing of the skies occurred in August, and by now the frown has disappeared from the brow of most business forecasters. Their prediction for fall and winter business is “fair and warmer.” The outlook is excellent, they say, the more so be- cause there is much lost ground to be made up. Factory sales of automo- biles, for example, amounted to only 1,345,311 the first seven months this year compared with 3,227,266 in the same period last year. This means that the average life of all automobiles on the road has been increasing dur- ing 1938, and a potential demand is being stored up which sooner or later must exert itself. Estimates of na- tional income, represented by the flow of wages, salaries, dividends, interest and profits of individual owners of businesses, for 1938 have been revised upward a billion dollars by the De- partment of Commerce to $61,000,000,- 000 as a result of trade improvement since June. This figure, however, falls almost 12 per cent below last year’s $69,000,000,000 national income. rey HEADLINES IN NEW YORK— Butter prices drop to 1934 levels as supplies reach new high , . . U.
