Keller, Deputy Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of For- ests and Waters. Cutting Christmas trees without permission is theft, and the penalty provided by law for such illegal cutting is $25 for each tree re- moved. One-half million evergreens are cut each year from the hillsides of Penn- sylvania and marketed for Christmas decorations. These locally cut trees {retail from 25 cents to $2.50 each. As ‘a result of the quick turnover and high percentage of profit to be made from the sale of Christmas trees, cutting evergreens from privately owned land without the consent of the owner has lin several sections reached the status of an “easy money racket.” ‘A number of truckers of Christmas trees found out to their financial em- barrassment that the State Legisla- ture passed such a‘law in 1927. Many land owners are on watch these crisp December evenings to detect self-ap- pointed Santa Clauses, operating trucks instead of sleighs, to prevent them from getting away with valu- able loads of stolen evergreens. Forest rangers also have been in- shrubs growing in the State forests.
