The hi: lory of The Prudential Insur

BREVITIES.
At the Grand opera house hall the
12Gth anniversary of the birth of Robert
Emmet will be appropriately celebrated
this evening by the Larkin Social Club.
Admission to the hall will be limited to
the members of the club and their lady
friends and the members of John Boyle
O'Rielly Literary Society, of Hazleton.
The authorities at Ashley in a suit
against the Wilkesbarre and Ilazleton
Railroad Company, charge that the
company obtained its charter by a sub
terfuge, saying that it intended to
carry passengers exclusively. The fight
is over the possession of a street in Ash
ley, which the company is using.
"Minnesota's Best" flour is sold by A.
Oswald. There is none bettor made.
An effort will be made before the
supremo court on March 10 to secure a
new trial for Peter Lenousky, one of the
two men convicted in the first degree
for the murder of Anthony Sionick, in
the Exeter shaft, West Pittston.
James Thompson, who was mentioned
in Monday's issue as having accepted a
position at Silver Brook, has reconsider
ed the matter and has accepted a clerk
ship in the office of the Lehigh Trac
tion Company, liazleton.

April 3 and 17 as Arbor Days, to be ob
served on either date according to the
weather conditions in the various parts

Miners' Hospital Report.
According to the report of Superin
tendent Walter Lathrop, of the Miners'
hospital, Hazleton, 1,077 patients were
cared for during 1902. The number of
patients admitted was 331, of which
number 241 wore discharged as cured,
38 improved and 3 not Improved. The
number of deaths was 41. The average
daily number of patients was 27, while
the largest number at any one time in
the institution was 42. The number of
dispensary cases treated during the year
was 740.
Strike Is Still On.
The executive committee of Wilkes
barro striking carpenters refused to
sanction the action of the special com
mittee, which late Monday evening
agreed with the contractors to call ofT
the strike upon the men being given an
increase of wages of §2 00 for a day of
eight hours. The men who went to
work yestorday morning were called out
agaiu.
Suit for Damages.
Suit for $95,000 damages was com
menced against the Lehigh Valley Rail
road yesterday by Joseph Hendler, a
contractor, of VVilkesbarre. lie says
the company trespassed upon three of
his properties In Plains township, and
carried away about 150,000 tons of sand.
Council Deadlocked.
Lansford town council is
in the election of its president. The
Republicans and Socialists each have
four votes and the key to the situation
Is held by James Mulhearn, the only
Democrat in the council. So far he has
declined to vote.
