Lightning played a queer prank on a
force of Philadelphia and Reading Rail
road repairmen at Mahanoy Plane,
during a severe storm Monday after
noon. There were nearly thirty men In
tho crowd, and when the storm broke
they hurried under a big water tank,
which stands beside tho track. Light
ning struck it near the base, flooding
00,00() gallons of water down on top of
the crouching men, scared speechless.
The men were washed out into the pen,
but aside from an involuntary bath,
they escaped injury.

fendant's saloon at Duryea on the night
of May 20 last, was sentenced to pay a
fine of SSOO and tho costs and to an im
prisonment of two years at labor in tho
county jail. M. 11. McAniff, the de
fondant's attorney, made a motion for a
now trial on the ground that tho verdict
was against tho evidence and tho law
and not in accord with tho charge of
the court. In denying tho motion Judge
Lynch said tho verdict of the jury was
not against tho charge of the court.
The jury, he said, was composed of in
telligent men and they had tried tho
case fairly. One of tho reasons, he said,
for so much crime in this county was
the carrying and tho reckless use of
deadly weapons. Tho court could soo
no reason why a man in this county
should have a loaded revolver, knife or
deadly weapon on or about his porson.
The defendant, lie said, admitted that
ho kept a loaded revolver behind tho
bar within easy reach. Yushawicz had
no right to take tho life of tho deceased.
