Wil helm, captain in the Twenty-first United States infantry, who was killed in the Philippines, arrived at Mauch Chunk Friday morning. Preparations are be ing made for the funeral Tuesday after noon. General Miles lias ordered Gen eral llrooko, of New York, commanding the Department of the East, to send a regulation escort to Mauch Chunk on the occasion of the funeral. The body of Howard Templin, a member of Company I. Forty-seventh volunteer infantry, who died of typhoid fever in the Philippines over a year ago. was brought to liis home at Port Carbon on Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Shoemaker, of Warrior Run, have received news of the death of of their son John, who died in the Phil ippines on May 71. They expected him home next September. Charles W. Jones, who enlisted at Wilkesharre on June !•>. 1898. and who was wit h the Ninth regiment through the Spanish-American campaign as a tele grapli operator, was killed last week on a railroad at Ogema. Wisconsin. lie was working at White Haven when he enlisted. Must Take Away Loose Stones. The supervisors in the several town ships of Luzerne will be interested in a new law signed by Governor Stone. It provides that the supervisors and road j commissioners shall by contract or other wise, remove and take away the loose : stones from the traveled roads or high- ; ways, at least once a month, during May, June, August and October, in each year. In ease of neglect or refusal t<> carry out the provisions of the first section of this act., they shall forfeit and pay for such offense, neglect or refusal a fine or penalty, not exceolng $lO to be secured by action of debt in the name of the commonwealth, before any justice of the peace or alderman of the county, with costs of suit.
