Another murder biota the record of
Luzerne county and the details are of
such a nature that the people of IMtts
ton and vicinity are talking of organiz
ing a posse to hunt down the perpetra
tors of the crime.
At an early hour yesterday morning
James Ozipa, a fruit dealor of Wilkes
barre, was found unconscious in the
woods near Pittston. Blood was flowing
from his mouth and oars, and his skull
was crushed in throe places.
Ozipa was taken to Pittston hospital
in tills condition, where he recovered
consciousness long enough to say that
lie had been set upon by highwaymen
who beat him over the head with an
Iron bar and took S3OO from hi in.
No Date for Convention.
Chairman Reese Lloyd rofuses to make
known the date when he will again call !
the county convention together for the
purpose of announcing the nomination
of Arthur Dick for controller. Me says
that after a careful recount ho finds
Dick got a few more votes than Con
troller Joseph Lloyd, the anti-machine
candidate for the place. What the
small majority Is ho will not announce.
The reason for the delay and his reti
cence, it is alleged, is that he wants
to give Joseph Lloyd time to cool down
and restore harmony in the Republican
ranks. This is not likely to come about,

Well Played Ball Game.
The second game of tho series be
tween Ilazleton Athletics and Drlfton
Fearnots was played at the local park
yesterday afternoon. The game was
exciting and Interesting from start to
finish. Tho Drlfton boys lead in the
score in tho early part of the game, but
through errors and wild throwing per
mitted their opponents to Mo the score
at 3, where it remained until tho eighth
inning.
Tho ninth inning brought the score 4
to 3 in favor of Ilazleton when the
visitors ended their half. Excitement
was intense as tho Fearnots came to hat.
Two runs wero necessary to win, and it
was hoping against hope that they would
be had. McGeehan led off with a clean
base hit. Gillespie followed with a long
three-base drive, sending McGeehan
home, which tied the score.
At this point the audience was exceed
ingly demonstrative. Marloy was the
next batter, and 110 knocked out a base
hit which scored Gillespie and won the
game for the Fearnots, 5 to 4.
Youthful Burglars.
Neußurgor's store was entered lasf
night by one of a party of tlireo young
lads whose ages range from twelve to
sixteen years. The light from matches
which he struck in tho rear part of
the store revealed tho presence of tho
youngest of the trio. He had entered
by a window and was trying to open the
rear door. Harry Neußurgnr took him
in charge and Officer Mo'.ick placed him
in tho lockup, where It was found he
was a boy named Bonomo.
His companions, one whose name is
Kane and the othor who calls himself
'•Willie Shafer," made their escape, but
warrants have been issued for their
arrest.
Bought Six Collieries.
The .Seneca Coal Company passed Into
the control of the Lehigh Valley Coal
Company on Saturday. The Seneca
Company has been owned and controlled
by Edward L. Fuller, of Senanton. The
transfer Includes the Seneca breaker,
the Twin shaft and Coxey shaft at Pitts
ton, tho Plnenix breaker and shaft, the
Columbia shaft and washery at Duryoa,
and the Sioux colliery at Mt. Carmel.
About 8.000,000 tons of coal remain
unmined in tho Pittston district alone.
Wilkesbarre Electric Light Company
has offered to grant tho concession of
an eight-hour day demanded by the fire
men, provided the other companies will
do the same thing.
Indefinite Suspension.
A notice, announcing an indefinite
suspension of the colliery and tho strip
pings, employing in all about 800 men.
was posted by fl. Pardoe & Co., at Latti
mor, Saturday afternoon. The cause of
the suspension, which went into effect
today, is unknown. It is said that the
company took this course to forstall the
Mine Workers in their determination to
prevent over-production, while another
report is to the effect that there Is a
dispute with tho Black Creek Improve
ment Company on account of royalty.
ROUND THE REGION.
The court has been asked to settle a
factional tight in the church of Kripp
loln Christie, a Wilkesbarre Gorman
Lutheran church. Three members of
the congregation, John llergfstock,
Frederick Apple and Philip May, were
granted a preliminary injunction by
Judge Lynch to restrain Rev. Paul
Rowalt, the pastor, and some of the
trustees from putting thetu outside the
church. They complain that the pastor
has refused to allow them to enter,
although they are regular members of
the congregation.
Pottsville council has made an ap
propriation for a municipal hospital in
which to treat smallpox patients, an
epidemic of the disease being appre
hended. Tito hospital was erected Sat
urday night. It consists of tents on the
suburbs of the town. Gaspers Haardel,
an Italian patient, sufTering with the
worst form of the disease, was removed
to the new hospital at midnight last
night.
Isaac Hoffman, aged about 40 years,
died at the Schuylkill county alms
house, actually haviug starved himself
to death deliberately. Two months ago
he was a prisoner in the county jail,
when he started hit fatal fast. He lab
ored under the hallucination that his
keepers were trying to poison him.
Later he was removed to the almshouse,
still obstinately refusing food. At death
he was reduced to a mere skeleton.
William Griffith, of Plymouth, went to
Wilkesbarre yesterday to take a train
for the Pan-American Exposition. This
morning he awoke to find that ho had
been given knock-out drops and robbed
of SIOO and his watch, lie remembered
meeting a pleasant colored man at tiie
depot and going with him to take a
drink.

Martin Rascwicz, a Polander, com
plained to the Wilkesbarre police that
he had been robbed of $1,500. He says
lie drew bis savings from the bank, in
tending to go to Poland. Ho wont into
a saloon, got SSO from tho roll and
bought several drinks. Some time after
that he found his money missing. Tho
sum represented his saving of a lifetimo.
A. J. Ferguson, who owns a farm in
Lake township, has before Alderman
Dohohue instituted action to have
Grant McNeal ejected from the land.
Ferguson asserts that some time ago he
hired McNeal to work for him and that
now McNeal has calmly taken posses
sion of tho house, is living in it and
pays no heed to the protests. A warrant
was issued.

The Lehighton fair will ho held on

tors are endeavoring to make this
year's fair the biggest ovent ever held

new stables and tho race track is in

Several Wilkesbarro merchants wore
arrested on the charge of violating the
recent law of the legislature providing
that no firecrackers containing any
explosive other than the ordinary gun
powder shall he manufactured or sold.

Mrs. Mary .O'Donnell, the mother of
Carbon County Commissioner John
O'Donnell, died on Saturday at Mauch
Chunk. She had reached the age of
83 years. Mrs. O'Donnell was the
widow of the late Manns O'Donnell, one
of East Mauch Chunk's earliest residents.
Crazed by beat, Mrs. Bernard O'Boyle,
of Avoca, tried to suicide with laudanum
yesterday. The dose was excessive and
she will recover.
Theodore Stevens, of Wilkesbarre,
who was caught with throe pheasants
on July 2, has been compelled to pay $35
for each bird. He was prosecuted by
the Luzerne County Sportsmen's Club.

W. A. Evans and Ralph Raker, of
Hazleton,- havo joined W. Pitt Hunter
in the publication of the Conyngham
Herald. The first issue under the now
management appeared on Saturday and
is very creditable to the young firm.
The Sterling Athletic Club is after the
Boner-Walcot and the Mulhall-Forry
contests, and if a big purse and a square
deal are inducements which the boxors
will consider, the exhibitions will take
place here.
An organization of the liquor doalers
of town has been effected, with the fol
lowing officers: President, George Fish
er; vice president, William Gallagher;
secretary, Robert Boyle; treasurer, An
drew Hudock.
Miss Lulu Schmidt, who taught school
for somo years in Fosfcor township, has
accepted a position in White Haven
schools, and with her mother will re
move to that town.
The annual financial statement of the
condition of the Freeland borough school
district appears on this pago today.

Beishline, of Mllnesville, will shoot!
another pigeon match on .September 21
at the Mllnesville grounds. The match
is for a side bet of $l5O.
Rev. J. J.lvuntz yesterday assisted at

George Shigo has disposed of his
saloon on South Centre street and has
accepted a position at the brewery.

Dr. and Mrs. Keller, of Hazletou, are

Brick Presbyterian church, near Sey
bertsville, which has not been in use for
twenty years. A contract for the work

the picnic and Irish games to be held at
the Public park on the afternoon and
evening of the 20th inst.
