Prizes Awarded.
At the Grand opera house on Wednes
day evening the annual closing exorcises
of the Mining and Mechanical Institute
took place beforo a large audience.
Hon. George D. McCreary, of Philadel
phia, acted in his usual cheorful manner
as chairman and several selections were
rondered by St. Ann's band.
The features of the ovoning were the
address of Hon. John Field, the vale
dictory of Patrick Dover and the award
ing of the prizes by Prof. E. F. Hanion.
Mr. Field's Founder's Day address
was as good a half-hour's talk as the
people of town have had the pleasure of
hearing for some time. His references
to the late lOckley U. Coxe were well re
ceived.
Mr. Dever, in his valedictory, did ex
ceptionally well, and merited the gen
erous applause accorded him.
The several pupils who took part in
the program were up to the usual stand
ard which the public has come to expect
from M. & M. pupils, this being especial
ly true of the very young boys who par
ticipated. Among these Edward Mc-
Ilugh deserves particular mention.
Prof. Hanion, just before the close,
awarded the following cash prizes on
behalf of ths directors:

Status of Miners' Bills.
The legislative committee of anthra
cite coal miners, who havo beon urging
the passage of several bills in their
interest through the legislature, have
made a final effort to get the senate
committee on minos and mining to re
port to the senate the three mining bills
that aro still in that, committee.
This offori was made in the shape of a
letter to each senator asking that tho
committee bo discharged from further
consideration of the bills. In order to

lative committee of the miners has re-

quested tho members of the bouse of
representatives from the anthracite
counties to continue to withhold their
support of the Fox capitol bill until
favorable action is taken on the miners'
bills. The members froin those counties
number about twenty, and the miners
say that most of them will stand by the
mine workers.
The three bills still in committee pro
vide for the following:
House Bill No. 215—That the miners
shall be paid at a rale per ton, instead
of a rate per car.
House Bill No. 210—That a check
weighman or check irfbasurer, employed
and paid by the miners, shall be present
when the coal is woighed or measured.
House Bill No. 217—That coal shall
bo weighed before it is screened.
Died From Injuries.
Mrs. Nora Breslin, an aged woman
residing on Pino street, while on her
way to visit her daughter at Drifton,
was struck by a horse and run over by
the wagon near tho I). S. Jc S. Railroad
station on Wodnesday evening at 0.30
o'clock. The horse became frightened
at a passing train. It has not been
positively ascertained whose toarn it
was that hit the woman.
Mrs. Breslin was taken to her
daughter's home in Drifton, whoro she
laid unconscious until shortly after noon
today, when she expired.
The deceased is survived by a son,
Condy Breslin, Milnesville, and a
daughter, Mrs. James Breslin, Drifton;
also by a sister, Kitty Boyle, of Pine
street.
Tho funeral will take place on Sunday
afternoon from Drifton. Interment at
at St. Ann's cemetery.
A Week of Repertoire.
The success of high-class repertoires
has Hooded the country with small or
ganizations, who hope to achieve suc
cess sololy through the popular prices of
10, 20 and 30 cents. The patrons of tho
theatre today keep themselves fairly
well informed, and are not as often im
posed upon as in former years. The
press has done more to make the Jessie
Hawtolle Dramatic Company what It is
than any other factor. To secure this
the attraction must be a meritorious
one. The Jessie Sawtelle Dramatic
Company will open a wock's engagement
at tho Grand opera house on Monday,
June 10, presenting "The Victorian
Cross."
Ladies will be admitted on Monday
evening for 15 cents, if their tickets aro
purchased beforo 0 p. m. that day.
School Board Meeting.
The June meeting of the borough
school board was ho.ld Wednesday even
ing with Directors Siattery, Purcell,
Brogan, Buckley, Isaac, Kline, Kelly,
McColo and McGeehan present.
The secretary was instructed to noti
fy the Water Company to shut off tho
water at the Washington and the Ridge
street buildings.
The building and grounds committee
was instructed to look after the Ridge
street building, which was reported do
faced and otherwise damaged.
J. 11. Foeley, representing J. Ilobart.
Smith, of Syracuse, N. Y., presented a
hist irical chart of topical studies, the
merits of which were explained to the
board. The advisability of purchasing
the same was referred to the text book
committee.
Death Was Natural.
Dr. Kirk Stanley, who was arrostod
on suspicion of being concerned in the
death of Rev. E. S. Phillips, of llazle
ton, has been discharged from custody
by Coroner Bausch, of New York city.
The report of the expert chemist em
ployed by the district attornoy showed
that the priest's death was due to nat
ural causes, and that no poison was ad
ministered.

Mine Inspector G. M. Williams, who
has held the position of inspector of the
Fourth anthracite district for tho past
twenty-one years, is about to accept a
position as general manager of the
Kingston Coal Company. He tendered
his resignation as mine inspector yes
terday.
Last Monday Ilev. D. C. Phillips, of
West Scranton, disappeared from home
and much alarm is felt by tho family
that ho has met with foul play. The
clergyman has beon in ill-health for
for some time and was compelled to give
up his North Scranton charge soverul
months ago.
The trial of Attorney S. S. Herring
ended in his vindication. He was
charged by C. S. Fargo with refusing to
pay $l4O which he had collected for
Fargo. Horring claimed that ho had
paid it and the jury believed him. Far
go has applied for a new trial.
Heavily armed. John Ryars. high
constable of Browntown, this county,
waited In a clump of bushes along the
highway leading to the village and shot
at pedestrians. No oue was injured.
Byars is probably Insane.
John Velth, mining superintendent of
the Philadelphia aud Reading Coal and
Iron Company, has notified the strikers
at Hammond colliery, Glrardville, that
if they do not resume work within three
days the breaker will be torn down.
T. J. Stookey, of the Delaware, Lacka
wanna and Western shops at Kingston,
was arrested yesterday for hitting a
striker. Stephen Pierce, a striker, was
endeavoring to induce a non-union work
man to quit work, when, it Is asserted,
Stookey attacked him.
Joseph Anderson, until recently a
member of the Shenandoah police force,
was held in SOOO bail for court on the
charge of perjury and subordination of
perjury in connection with a naturaliza
tion scheme.
Hose Company No. 3, of Plymouth,
has struck. The mombors claim that
for three years they have been expect
ing the borough council to provide them
with better hose and now quarters. As
tho council has procrastinated in this
matter they will not act as firemen.
Over 700 laborers employed on tho
new trolley road now In course of cons
truction befcwoon Wilkesbarre and Scran
ton went on strike after being refused
an iucrease in wages.

struck today because the company ro
fused to pay them semi-monthly.
Rev. Peruzzl, pastor of the Italian
church at liazloton, will probably go to
Mt. Carmel, where lie will havo chargo
of a church of his fellow countrymen.
The coroner's jury Investigating the
death of .lames Kelley, of Summit Hill,
who was stabbed to death on the night
of Memorial Day, charges Henry Smith
with willful and premodlated murder.
Andrew Coyle, aged 11 years, dind
today at Plymouth of lockjaw, caused
by having been struck 011 the head by a
playmate a week ago with a stone.
Denis McFadden, aged 44 years, died
last evening at lla/.lelon. Ho was born
at Joannsrllle, where ho resided until
eight years ago.
John Burns, aged no years, a promin
ent citizen of Plymouth, died at his homo
yesterday of pneumonia.

Representatives of the Ilazleton Atb
letic and Drifton base ball teams met
last evening and deposited $25 of the SSO
contest rnonej which will go to the
winner of the series of three games.
The first will likely be played at Free
land on the 15th inst.
James Sweeney, of Upper Lehigh, has
returned from Philadelphia, where ho
went to have an operation performed on
his eye. The physicians decided that
it is not advisable to operate upon the
organ at present.

Council having refused to take any
action on the request of the street em
ployes for au advance in wages from
$1.25 to $1.50 per day, the men have
struck and all work on the streets is at
a standstill.
The reopening services at St. John's
Reformed church, which were to be held
on Sunday next, have been postponed
to a future date. Services on Sunday
will be held In the Sunday school room.
