Sand Grass—lts Uses.
For many years the government at
Washington has, through the bureau of
agriculture, been investigating the na
ture of sand grasses. It has learned
what other countries have accomplish
ed with them. It has brought speci
mens from all lands and gathered them
by the hundreds, representing every
known variety growing wild in this
country. It has studied their nature
and habits, experimented with them un
der all possible conditions, and finally
it has made a number of trial plantings
in the sandy regions along the shores
of Massachusetts, California and Flor
ida. Other nations with greater deserts
of sand in their territory than those of
this country are watching the progress
of these experiments. If they prove
successful we may expect to sec a grad
ual disappearance of such places in Eu
rope which have for centuries stood as
almost insurmountable barriers to the
progress of civilization.—Pearson's

jaw and teeth of a mammoth, presum

ments of teeth on the lower jaw and
tusks were also found, and such ror
tions of the specimens as were pre- j

um of the University of Arizona at ;

dicates that the mammoth once was I
extant in Arizona, and that this re- I

arid, must have enjoyed at one time
considerable moisture, which afforded :

A simple mechanical idea is revolu- !

the raisin seeder. The principle *s a
combination of rubber rollers which i
force the seeds against a set of steel
claws. The latter cut the skin and
remove the seeds, and the seed 4 are
then taken off the saws by a set of !
steel combs. The machine does its •

seeded raisins come out of the ma- !

OILS FROM THE WHALE.
Qualities Which Still Alnkfl a l>omuti<l Cor
Them for Certain Purposes.
"Whale oil," said a dealer in oiis,
"is to some extent used as a lubrica- :
ting oil, but not to a very largo ex- ,
tent; when used for lubricating pur
poses it is more often compounded
with mineral oils, which are cheaper.
Whale oil is used for tempering steel;
it is still used in a limited way by
some people as an illuminating oil.
Whale oil is used for making whale j
oil soap, used for killing worms on '
trees.
"Sperm oil is a fine lubricating oil,
used on fine machinery, large and |
small; the fine sewing machine oil is j
likely to bo sperm oil. It is used for ;
illuminating purposes in safety lamps |
in mines, and it is used to some ex-'
tent for lamps in warehouses, be
cause of its small liability to explode, !
sperm standing a higher degree of
heat than mineral oils. It is used as
a, signal oil on shipboard, for lamps
and lanterns, and for sidelights, and
so on; and on steamers for a lubrica- j
tiug oil. For all these purposes miner-1
al oils and lubricating compounds have j
more or less supplanted it because of;
their greater cheapness, but sperm
oi' is nevertheless in demand for!
them. There are some other uses for j
whale oil and for sperm oil, which are \
still sold to larger and smaller users j
by the barrel or the can or gallon.
Whale oil brings somewhere about f>o !
cents a gallon and sperm oil 60 cents
or thereabouts, and the desirable I
qualities, for some uses, of these oils,
once so commonly usea, make a mar-!
ket for the comparatively small, and ;
diminishing quantities of them now 1
brought to sale, even though their !
pHces are higher than those of the j
oils that have so commonly sup- j
planted them.
"There is an oil produced from some j
pari, of the head of the whale oil or
sperm oil. It sells in fact for as
much as $lO a gallon. This is watch
o'J, and it may be bought of dealers
in watcli supplies. It is used for oil
ing watches and also for oiling the
arbors, or journals, of the wheels of
tower clocks. It is not only a fine lub
ricant, but it withstands cold remark
ably well, not freezing except at an
extremely low temperature, for
which reason it is very desirable tor
su<~h use in cold and exposed situa
tions."—New York Syn.

THE DUTY OF MOTHERS.
What Buffering- frequently rcsulta
frc*n a mother's ignorance ; or more
frequently from a mother's neglect to
properly instruct her daughter I
Tradition says "woman must suf
fer," and young women are so taught.
There is a little truth and a great deal
of exaggeration in this. If a young
woman suffers severely she needs
treatment, and her mother should see
| that she gets it.
Muny mothers hesitate to take their
; daughters to a physiciau for examina
tion ; but no mother need hesitate to
write freely about her daughter or
herself to Mrs. Pinkham and secure
the most efficient advice without
charge. Mrs. Pinkham's address is
Lynn, Mass.
Mrs. August Pfalzgraf, of South
Byron, Wis., mother of the young lady
whose portrait we here publish, wrote
Mrs. Pinlcham in January, 1809, saying
her daughter had suffered for two
years with irregular menstruation
had headache all the time, and pain in
her side, feet swell, and was generally
miserable. Mrs. Pinkham promptly
; replied with advice, and under date of
March, 1899, the mother writes again
! that Lydia E. Pinkham'a Vegetable
; Compound cured her daughter of all
! pains and irregularity.
! Nothing in the.world equals Mrs.
Pinkliam's great medicine for regu
lating woman's peculiar monthly
troubles.
