ALDERMAN
IN DANGER
Wilkesbarre Official Gets
Infernal Machine.
Matches Arranged So They
Would Ignite on Sand-
Paper and Explode a Box
Filled With Powder.
Alderman Robert Conahan, of Wilkes
barro, found an infernal machine at the
door of ids homo yesterday morning,
but discovered what it was before there
was any explosion. It was a cigar box
carofully wrapped and labeled "Alder
man Conahan, with the compliments of
the season." As ho priod open the lid
some powder fell out. He was sus
picious and did not open it until he had
soaked it for half an hour in a bucket of
water.
Then ho discovered that the box was
full of gunpowder, and attached to the
lid were eight matches in such a manner
that they would scrape against some
sandpaper and bo ignited when the box
was opened. The affair was very crude
ly constructed, and it is doubtful if
there would have been an explosion,
even if the alderman had opened the
box when he first got it.
He has no idea who intended to injure
him, but supposes it must be some
offender who appeared before him and
who desired revenge.

A Diphtheria Cure.
Tho Scientific American gives this ro
ceipt as one which the world ought to
know. At the first indications of diph
theria in the throat of a child, make the
room close and then take a cup and pour
into it a quantity of tar and turpentine,
equal parts. Hold tho cup over the fire,
so as to fill the room with fumes. The
patient, on inhaling the fumes, will
cough up and spit out all the membrane
ous matter, and the diphtheria will pass
out. Tho fumes of tar and turpentine
loosen the matter in tho throat and af
ford a relief tiiat lias ballicd the skill of

and telegrams and other things which
tend to show that the prisoner is not
above suspicion in other parts of the
country. I would like time to havo
these investigated."
Stuart was placed under 810,000 bail,
which was furnished.

tion, being very strong.
