Fatal Explosion Three men were killed, six more prob ably fatally injured and nineteen others more or less seriously burned by an ex plosion at Buck Mountain colliery, Schuylkill county, on Friday. Edward Gallagher, a repairman, with a flaming mining lamp, went into an old abandon ed breast to secure a plank. lie Is al leged to have accidentally touched of! the gas. James Griffiths, aged 40, Mahanoy City, was killed outright, and John Mc- Dlynn, aged 17, Buck Mountain, and Charles Jones, aged 50, Buck Mountain, have died from their wounds. Joseph Strokonas, aged 30, Buck Mountain; Henry Obrecht, Mahanoy City; Edward Gallagher, aged 00, Buck Mountain; Daniel Shovelin, aged 55, Buck Moun tain, and Andrew Haverilla were seriously burned. Gallagher died yesterday from the effects of his injuries, and at an early hour this morning David Lenardy, whose injuries were considered not seri ous, also died. Michael Butzkis, David Jenkins, Louis Bartcll, Charles Smith, Joseph Sudikas, Joseph Silkonas, Paul Yutko, Andrew Pierce and others were painfully burned. Three of the victims, Jones, Shovelin and Gallagher, were at one time resi dents of this vicinity; Jones having lived many years at Upper Lehigh, Shovelin at Highland and Gallagher at Freeland. As far as can be learned, tho explosion was apparently due to Edward Gal lagher going Into an abandoned work ing with a naked lamp and igniting the gas, which had accumulated. Gallagher had been ordered to procure a plank for the purpose of making repairs, and the lire boss, William Moses, says he ad monished Gallagher not to enter that abandoned working. Gallagher, on the other hand, says he received no warn ing whatever. TO BE BURIED HERE. Charles Jones, one of tho victims of the terrible explosion at Buck Mountaiu colliery on Friday, will bo buried here tomorrow. The remains aro expected to arrive at 11.45 a. ui., and will be taken to Freeland cemetery for Inter ment. Mr. Jones was a resident of ! Upper Lehigh for many years and had a large number of friends In this section. The deceased was a brother of Mrs. Thomas Parry, Upper Lehigh. End of Tragic Romance. The State Board of Pardons has pardoned Frank Bezek, who six years ago was convicted of killing his sweet heart, Maria Kerzac, at Olyphant, Lackawanna county. He was sentenced to bo hanged, but afterward the sen tence was commuted to imprisonment for life. Bezek and Maria Kerzac were lovers In Croatia, Austria, according to evidence brought out at his trial. He preceded her to this country and worked in tho minos, and when he had accumu lated sufficient money ho sent for the woman to come to this country. She soon afterward arrived and went to the homo of a relative In Olyphant. But before the wedding day another man appeared on the scene, supplanting Bezek in tho affections of tho young woman. Bezek came down to Olyphant to claim his bride, and was turned away. Ho then shot her dead. At tho trial it was attempted to be shown by tho defendant that he was down-hearted and attempted to commit suicide. In doing so, it was said, the women pulled the revolver around so that when it was discharged, tho bullet pierced her nock, fatally wounding her. Water Famine Feared. The drought in tho coal region Is be coming more serious daily. The Phila delphia and Reading Railway at Maha noy Piano Is now compelled to haul water in oil tanks from Sunbury, a dis tance of forty-one miles. At Shenan doah the water from the public works is turned on but three hours each day, two hours in the morning and one hour in the evening. For domestic purposes enough of this scant supply is stored to serve for twenty-four hours. Reading Coal Company collieries de pond almost entirely on sulphur water pumped from the mines and purified with the assistance of lime. This Is well enough as a touiporary expedient, but Its continued use means sure de struction to the boilers. Tho sulphur water eats away tho tubes and the boilers aro usoless within a month. Naturalization Court. Among the applicants (or citizenship In Luzerne county court toduy aro the following from this vicinity: Andrew Zelenak, Vincent Winters, John Geritzkt, Freeland. William Carlfn, Jacob Sukle, Drifton. Anthony Fronack, Eckley. Harnett for Sule. Five horses and three colts are offered for sale cheap at the farm of \V. 11. Hosier, two miles north of White Haven. Animals can be seen on the farm. All must bo sold before November 20. THEATRICAL Augustus Pitou's naval drama, "The Gunner's Mate," is to be presented next Friday evening for the second time in Freeland. This play is from the pen of a man well calculated to picture, in a consistent and true-to-life manner, the incidents and every day happenings among Uncle Sam's blue jackets. Its author is dramatic editor of the Newark, N. J., Sunday Call. The dramatic ex perience and familiarity with nautical lore cannot fail to produce a play that will appeal most forcibly to the Ameri can public. When to these considera tions aro added the fact that the pro duction is under the management of Augustus Pitou, its claim upon the at tention of a patriotic theatre-going public can bo made no stronger. Three of tho five scenes of tho play present actual reproductions of views of the cruiser New York. The story is full of strong sensational effects, with a grateful intermingling of comedy. The scene showing tho lire-room of the New York, and the thrilling climax which transpires in it, is one of the strongest imaginable. Among the special features of tho pro duction are a mandolin quartette, a pair of buck dancers and several high-class singers. X X X Tickets for the lecture by Spill man Riggs on "Musical Misfits, at the Grand tomorrow evening, are going rapidly and tho indications arc that the second entertainment of tho M. &, M. course will be largely attended. t t t William A. Brady's magnificent pro duction of that beautiful pastoral drama, "Way Down Kast," which, by tho way, Is the first production ever repeating its run in the city of Boston, and which is now duplicating its Eastern success at McVlcker's theatre in Chicago, will be seen here during the season. Executive Board Meeting. Benjamin James, of Jeanosville, has boon summoned to Indianapolis to attend a meeting of tho national execu tive board of the United Mine Workers. Tho meeting will bo the last to bo hold by the board before the national conven tion in January. Matters of grave im portance will be considered and the pol icy to be adopted at tho convention will be outlined. Foremost among these matters is the cond i I ion in the anthracite fields. While the miners were victorious in the great strike which has just been settled, this was simply a preliminary skirmish, and a great deal of work remains to bo done, it is announced. The primary consid eration is to get tho operators in tlia anthracite districts to meet the repre sentatives of tho United Mine Workers in annual scale conference. Abused the Horse. Rev. J. W. Bischoff drove from his home in Upper Lehigh Monday morning and placed his horse and carriage In tho stable, rear of the Presbyterian church on Front street. He then left for Uazle ton, going and returning via the trolley line. Arriving here at 1 o'clock ho went for his horse and found the animal in the stable reeking with sweat and show ing the effects of having been driven hard. The day was cold and the horse was in great danger of becoming 111. No trace of the party who took tho horse and carriage from tho stable has yet been found, but it was probably done by some person familiar with the owner's movements. Should the identi ty of the guilty one be established, he will be prosecuted. Assistant District Attorney. The large majority given In Freeland to lionj. R. Jones, district attorney elect, has started a movement among the friends of John M. Carr, Esq., with tho object of securing for him the ap pointment by Mr. Jones of assistant dis trict attorney. Mr. Carr Is well quali fied for tho position, and his friends feel that his work for the party in tho late and previous campaigns deserves con sideration. Other lawyers whose claims are being pushed for the appointment are Gran ville J. Clark, E. F. Cook, John D. Farn ham, W. 11. McCartney aud H. F. Meyers. Public Meeting Tonight.
