Not for many years past has there been a more quiet election in Freeland borough than that held yesterday. The day was an ideal ono for political purposes, the sun shining brightly until evening. The Republicans felt confident of polling their usual vote, and in this they were not mistaken, With two Freeland candidates on their ticket, they came voluntarily to the polls and cast more straight ballots than they have been doing for many elections past. With the Democrats the circumstances were the reverse. Few of the party men took more than a passing interest in tlie election and no effort was made to poll the regular vote. In fact, at some of the polls of town the Demo cratic voto fell off over 40 per cent. The huge ballot alsp bothered the average Democratic voter, and, as straight voting would not give a vote for the nominees scattered in other columns, many ballots contained marks for but few of the candidates. The election passed off remarkably quiet, and even in the evening, when the national results came in, but little feeling was manifested, the Republicans accepting the verdict as a matter of course and the Democrats showing very slight disappointment. Freeland gave Reese Lloyd, its towns man. a majority of 457 in a total vote of 896 for clerk of courts. This is a flatter ing tribute to the esteem in which Mr. Lloyd is held by his fellow-citizens. The total vote cast in Freeland for all candidates is given in an adjoining column, and the results in the nation and the several states are published on the fourth page. COUNTY. The entire Republican ticket is elect ed in the county by majorities estimated from 4,000 for Palmer to 11,000 for Ferris. Many election boards did not complete their work of counting the votes until this morning. The Workingraen's ticket polled a heavy vote, Hincs for judge apparently leading Martin on the Citizens 1 ticket. The estimated majorities at noon to day are: President—McKinley, 4,500. Congressman—Paliner, 4,000. Senator— Drury, 8,500. ,J ndge—Ferris, 1 1,000. District attorney—Jones. 10,000. Prothonotary—Jackson, 8,000. Clerk of courts—Lloyd, 0,500. Jury commissioner—Thrash, 10,500. The contest for minority jury com missioner seems to lie between Muiderig, Price and Gibbons, with chances favor ing them in the order named. LEGISLATIVE. The legislative contest in tills district between Messrs. Haworth and Sweenoy was the closest in the county. The Freeland candidate, however, was given a plurality of 170 iu town, and this as sured his oloction. Mr. Haworth's plurality, with all districts heard from, is 210. Hartinan, R., defeated Boyle iu the First district by 1,600. Coray, R., was re-elected in the Sec ond district by a majority of 2,000 over LaFrance, 1). Mahon, R., won in the Third over Drover, I)., and Hendershot, C., by 1,000. Burke, P., is elected in the Fifth over liis opponents, Tighe, I)., and Strange, It., by 300. Drum. R., defeated McCormick, D., in the Sixth; majority will he small. DeWitt's Witch Hazel Salve will quickly heal the worst burns and scalds and not leave a scar. Account of Death of Ilorouch Treasurer ThoutuH E. Dttviet*. Preamble. Inasmuch as the borough of Freeland has, during the past month, been called upon to mourn the loss of its esteemed borough treasurer, Thomas E. Davies, whose deatli leaves a void in our community which cannot be filled, casts a gloom over our entire body, which has heretofore been bright ened by his presence, and takes from us an object of admiration and respect, leaving but a memory of his virtues and usefulness. Whereas, It has pleased Almighty God, in Ills all-wise jurisprudence, to remove from among us our worthy and honored borough treasurer, who "was a faithful and honest officer, and Whereas, The intimate relations held with him in the performance of his duties both while a member of this body and while borough treasurer makes it eminently befitting that wo should re cord our appreciation of him; therefore be it Resolved, That while wo bow in humble submission to tho Omnipotent Being, whose handiwork we are, we mourn his death as one of the greatest losses our people could have been called upon to bear, ns there has gone from our midst a good and faithful officer, one whose advice was often sought and counsel accepted, one who was noted for his perserverance, unceasing in his ofTorts for the betterment of the com munity, charitable towards his fellow men, a kind and loving husband and father and a man who was true to all that was noble and good in this world. Resolved, That in his death our council has lost an earnest worker and our community has suffered a bereave ment which deprives it of one of its most respected citizens, one who was endeared to all by his untiring efforts to promote the welfare of humanity and, although he has gone to that Supreme Deity who has called him, he leaves bo hind him many pleasant remembrances that shalUnot be forgotten. Resolved, That wo tender to the be reaved family our heartfelt sympathy in this hour of their great sorrow, on the dispensation with which it has pleased Providence to alllict them, realizing that this, their great affilction, will be borne by them while time or memory endures. Resolved, That a copy of these resolu tions be spread on the records of our council, that they be printed once in the Freeland Progress, the Freeland Press and the Freeland Tribune and a copy be forwarded to the bereaved family.
