To tie Piffle!
This is the time of the year
when the average family is
compelled to expend more
money than at any other sea
son. To prepare for winter
means the purchasing of
numerous necessary articles.
Are you aware that an inspec
tion of our stock will let you
know that we can
Save You Money?
It's "volume" we're looking
for these days, and not our
usual percentage of profit.
The lower we make the price
the quicker you will buy our
goods, and we're figuring on
putting out hereafter twice the
quantity monthly, at half the
usual profits. It will pay us,
and it will pay you, to take
advantage of this proposition.
Quantity and Quality.
We carry as large a stock as
any other general store in the
region and the people tell us
that the quality of most articles
we sell are somewhat better,
and very often somewhat
cheaper, than you receive over
the average counter. Our
butter, eggs and groceries are
always fresh, and all our
goods are reliable.

Wonder If He
Saw This?
ll<> was iiumurcd in the darkest dungeon
beneath the castle moat.
"If I had a saw, a file, anything —" ho
moaned, as he looked at the solid burs ueross
the solitary window.
Then a thought struck liiin. His lace
brightened, like a Cripple Creek conflagrat ion.
Rapidly running over his supply of collars,
which laid just come from the laundry, he
selected one fitted to his purpose.
Five minutes later the great middle bar of
the window, dexterously severed by the saw
like edge of the laundered collar, fell apart.
He Was Free.
If he laid had his collars luundorcd at the
Freeland Steam Laundry he would be in jail
yet. We have a device for ironing the top
edge of collars and cuffs and return them to
you with a perfectly smooth edge. Try us.

GAINS MADE
BY STRIKERS
Number of Idle Miners Has
Been Increased.
Markle's Reply to Grievances
Presented and Men Hold
a Meeting—Sheriff Harvey
Asks for Troops-
The miners' strike Is steadily advanc
ing to a point which means a complete
shut down of every anthracite mine in
Pennsylvania. The strikers made tre
mendous gains this week in districts
which the operators claimed wero in
vincible. A week ago today only two
of the Reading Company's mines wore
idle; today thirty-one of their forty-two
collieries are shut down. In the Wyom
ing and Lackawanna valleys the situa
tion remains without change, the 81,000
men standing out to a man and behaving
themselves in a manner which shows
unparalleled discipline and good judg
ment. The Panther Creek valley is the
only district where the strike has not
yet entered, and this will receive at
tention in the near future.
In the Lehigh region, which has been
recognized as the battle ground by both
sides, the strikers are gaining ground
daily. Every colliery of Markle & Co.
is shut-down today, by order of the com
pany, although it is claimed that the
shut-down would have resulted this
morning whether the company issued
the order or not, as the reply to the
grivences presented on the 14th Inst,
has proved so unsatisfactory that fow
men would have reported for work.
Coxe Bros. & Co. have been unable to
induce sufficient men back to work to
run their Drifton colliery to anything
near its usual output, and at Eckley the
strikers are obtaining a foothold which
will likely result in a shut-down before
the week is over.
makklk's reply.
(J. B. Markle & Co.'s reply to the
grievances of their employes was read at
each of the collieries where men wero at
work yesterday. The ten complaints
were treated in the order prosented, and
wero disposed of as follows:
That tho men be paid semi-monthly.
Will be granted if a majority of tho em
ployes demand it.
That drivors be paid every hour they
work. Refused.
That men employed in robbing bo paid
for all dead work. Refused.
That men be hoisted from the mines
when they have finished their work.
I (fraiited.
That the powder be reduced to as low
a figure as possible. Asks for arbitra-
I tion.
That tho price paid for standing props
bo increased. Refused.
That engineers be paid by the hour.
Refused.
That a tool and powder car be. placed
at each slope every morning. Will
be granted if feasible plan is suggested.
That powder houses bo built at High
land No. 1 and Jeddo No. 4, East End.
Granted.
That employes receiving over $1.50 a
day be incroased 5 per cent and under
$1.50 10 per cent. Refused.

who have not struck was held today at
Jeddo. The gathering was addressed
by John Markle. Those present agreed

MITCHELL AT JKDDO.
A mass meeting was held at Jeddo
school house yesterday afternoon and
addresses were made by President Mit
chell and Organizers Dilcher and Slusser.
The reply of Markle & Co. was the
principal subject of the addresses. The
Marklo employes were urged to reject
the scheme which it is claimed would
defeat the object of a general strike.
They were asked to stand by their fel
low-men and to accept no plan which
will not settle the mine workers' griev
ances for ail time and in all sections.
SHERIFF "ASKS FOR TROOPS.
At 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon Sher
iff Harvey asked Governor Stone to
send troops into Luzerne county, alleg
ing that ho is no longer able to cope
with tho situation. Tho governor will
act upon tho requnst today.
Yesterday morning strikers from
South Side towns marched to Derringer
to provail upon tho employes there to
strike. They wore mot by the sheriff
and a squad of deputies. The riot act
was read, and in endeavoring to get
nearer to hear what the sheriff was
saying four men crossed the gutter to
tho land owned by Coxe Bros. Co.
When they stepped upon private prop
erty deputies arrested them and took
them to Wilkesbarre jail. The prisoners
are John Gallagher, Yorktown; Joseph
Coyle, Beaver Brook; John Brennan,
Cramberry, and Michael Yormoski,
Audenried. Later the men wero re
leased on bail.
KUDLICH PLACED UNDER BAIL.
Edgar Kudlich, superintendent of tho
Drifton companies, waived a hearing
yesterday on tho charges of assault,
surety of the peace and damages, pre
ferred before Alderman Fallon, of Haz
leton, by Peter Gallagher, of Washing
ton street. The latter was on his way
to tho Forty Hours services at St. Ann's
church, shortly before (> o'clock yester
day morning. Kudlich was in his buck
board and met Gallagher on Luzerne
street, near tho Grand opera house.
It is alleged that the superintendent
stopped Gallagher and endeavored to
force hi in off the street to the land of
the company. At tho same time he
swore at him and attempted to use his
whip. Gallagher thou went to Hazleton
and swore out a warrant. J. W. Graaf,
of Hazloton, furnished 81,200 bail for
Kudlich, SSOO each for assault and
surety, which go to court, and 8200 for
damages for a further hearing today.
SANDY RUN RESOLUTIONS.
A meeting was held at Sandy Run on
Monday evening. After an address by
Rev. J. W. Bischoff, resolutions were
adopted stating that tho employes of M.
5. Kornmorer & Co. desired to work, but
had been forced to quit because to work
under present conditions would have
meant possible danger to life and liinb
and to their employers' property.
The resolutions say that while the em
ployes recognize the right of labor to
organize they deplore the presont strike
as detrimental to the best interests of
both operators and miner and as an act
only inflicting hardships and suffering in
the community. The report is signed
by Noil Gallagher, Jr., Joseph Sarrfcks,
Sr., John Harvilla, John Meneely, An
drew Russell and Edward Mochamor.
