Ornamental shrubs, according to H. T. JBues, before the New Jersey Horticultural Society, to be desirable must bave some particular merit of tbeir own, sucb as beautiful foliage or Sowers, must be adapted to the local ity in which they aro grown and must be hardy. They will thrive in auy good garden soil, and to be most ef fective should be massed. Bo not place them in a deuse shade. Stir the ground around the roots frequently the first season. Among tb6 shrubs which are considered desirable are the different kinds of spiraea, lilacs, mock orange, red flowering currant, wild olive, Japan snowball, various kinds of hydrangeas, rose of Sharon, purple leaved birch, purple leaved maple, California privet, clematis Jackmauni, Japan lily, Virginia creeper and the honeysuckle. Destroying the Sati Jose Scale. Professor John R. Smith in Ento mological News tells of testing crude petroleum to destroy the San Jose scale upon fruit trees, with the idea that it was as good an insecticide as kerosene, and not so violent in its action. Tho first trial was on a row of dwarf pear trees badly infested by the soale. One pear tree was painted from the base to the tips of the twigs with the crude oil iu January. The fruit set normally and a fair crop. There were a few dead spurs on the tree, hut other trees no worse infest ed hut not treated died oither wholly or iu part, and at the time of writing, the pears—Duchess—were ripening normally, and as perfeot as any of their kind, while the tree was then one of the most vigorous in the or chard, and the scales were entirely de stroyed. When it was found this tree was not killed a dozen similar trees were Bprayed when leaved out and partly iu blossom. One side was treated one dav, and the other several days after, when the wind had changed. The spraying was very thorough each time, and a few shoots near the cen tre of each tree were killed, but the rest of tho tree developed naturally, and fruit was all that could bo desired ou September 14. The oil appeared to have a stimulating effect, and the trees from the wcrst in the orchard have become the best. An orchard of 200 Ben Davis apple trees eight years set was sprayed from April 14 to 22, and on September 10 was as fully loaded with fruit as any similar trce3 in the vicinity which had not been treated. He thinks the crude oil is no' only less injurious to vegetation than kerosene, but that it spreads more evenly, aud is as good au insecticide. Tho Cultivation of Orchard.. There is a'common complaint among farmors that their orchurds are dying out because of the iuteuse summer droughts which visit nearly every part of tha oouutry once every year or two. Thousands of orchards are rottiug away, aud iu niue cases out of teu this reason will be given as the primary canse. Next to this is the damage done to the trees by the 1 excessive cold of severe winters, especially in the northern holt of the States. Both of these causes are traceable to poor cultivation or lack of cultiva tion. Trees can stand more drought than grains or any of our vegetables, aud it must be a dry season iudeed to injure them to auy great extent. Consequently if we gave the same cultivation to them as we do to tho grain plants, sufficient moisture would be drawn from tho underground re servoirs to keep them iu healthy growing condition. Good cultivation means good drainage, and where trees havo proper drainage they are not apt to suffer much from winter freeziug. Thoro is,euch a close couueetiou be tween summer drought and winter freezing that one cannot be considered independent of tho other. It is be cause we have just tho soil for freez iug the roots of the trees with ice that our treo3 are iiuured iu winter, if the soil is cultivated iu summer, and properly drained, there will be little dauger of tho trees being badly in jured by the coldest weather. Tho damage done to the trees by freezing is duo to tho oxcessive moisture that collects iu the soil iu tho fall. Tho soil is thick and heavy, and tho water collects iu tho soil and cannot escape. Then when cold weather comes the roots of tho trees are frozen up in solid cakes of ice. It is this, and tho alternate thawing and freezing, that injures tho trees of our orchards. Tho remedy is very plain. By giving perfect drainage to the soil iu the fall of the year the surplus water will run off', and when cold weather comes the roots will not be frozen up iu ice. Then if a mulch is placed around tho trees to keep an even temperature there is little chance of injury beiug done to our hardy orchard trees. Tliero are plenty who wrap protect ing material around the trunk of tho trees, and liaudage tliem up generally like mummies, and entirely neglect the roots. Tire damage is always below tho ground and not above it. Givo a little more* attention to tbo roots, and the winters will do less permanent dafnage to the trees..— American Cultivator. New York Press: "Talkin' about rattlesnakes," said an Erie railroad brakeman, "did you ever hear how the mosquitoes saved a man's life up near Gulf Summit last summer? Well, while getting out railroad ties in a slashln' over back of the Summit, Abe More- | house was bitten in the leg by a rat tlesnake. A Susquehanna doctor wa3 at once sent for and the leg was band aged tightly above the wound. It was expected that Morehouse would die before the doctor could come up the pike on his bike. Just as soon as the leg was bared to put on the band age it was attacked by a swarm of mosquitoes, and when the doctor ar rived he found the lpan as lively as a cricket and in no ne&d of a doctor, but the ground was covered with dead and flying mosquitoes. They had sucked tho poison frdm the wound and saved Morehouse's life. The mosquitoes pre sented their bills and died. The doc tor presented his bill and got his money. This was hard on the mos quitoes, but I presume Morehouse's life was worth savin'. There was Sol Timson, another brakeman. Sol used to brake on tho Delaware division, from Susquehanna to Port Jervis. He had the ague awfully. Had it so bad that some of his teeth shook out, and |he shook the buttons off his coat. A lot of his friends had sure cures for the ague, and each gave him the pre scription. At last when he had 13 prescriptions, he took them all to a Port Jervis drug store and had them put up. He took them home and put them all into one jug. Then he shook the jug, mixed the 13 prescriptions thoroughly, and took three doses. He never shook again until the hearse struck a stone." An Opera for tho Qucn.
