HOW TO GET STRONG.
ho Kamsonian Bundow Tells How ll©
Studied a Model Statue in Milan.
Great strength is created, not made,
says Sandow, in the New York Morn
ing Journal. I mean by that remark
that the bone and sinew must bo of
the right material, else any amount of
training will fail to develop strength.
It has been my experience that many
have been unable to arrive at satis
factory results through inefficient
training.
The fault lies with the trainers. To
add strength to limb and musclo re
quires more than running and dieting
What is flesh for one person may bo
fish for another. A careful study of
the laws of hygiene and anatomy must
bo a part of the knowledge of the
trainer, and his discretionary powers
must play an active part in the train
ing of his subject.
Tho training of a man who makes
his appearance In tho prize ring is dif
ferent from that given a man who uses
his strength in lifting and carrying
weights. A very good model for tho
latter class to follow is a statue of
some one of the heroes of olden
times, when men were bred for tho
arena. Man was nearer perfection In
those days than he is at the present)
time.
Dissipation and vice have reduced us
in strength and physique, and if the
pace is kept up I doubt not that a few
centuries hence we shall be a race of
consumptive pigmies. Years ago,
when I was a boy, with my father I vis
ited Milan, and there in the art gal
leries I found the model I desired to
copy. Day after day I visited tho
model, each time studying a now mus
cle or a new bump. Before long I had
photographed that statue so firmly on
my mind that I could bring it before
my gaze at will, and it was my only
trainer during my hours of exercise.
The growth of strength can only bo
ascertained by increasing tho weight,
but it is dangerous to test your powers
too far. Fools have attempted to lift
moro than their reason dictated, and
have met with failure. The wise man
will continue to livo so long as his
egotism remains dormant.
LOST FORTUNE AND COURAGE.
llow a Minor Killed Himself And Loved
Ones Too Soon.
Some strango things happen In min
ing camps. Tho number who have
worked and delved in following a pros
pect until their money or their pa
ticnco became exhausted aro many.
And it not infrequently happens, says
the Auburn (Cal.) Herald, that such
parties livo to learn that they havo
abandoned their claims when a fow
more days' work, or possibly a few
more strokes of the pick, would havo
revealed tho lead which they had
worked to find. A story was told by
an old miner a few days ago of an east
ern college professor who camo out
hero in tho early days and started to
prospect on somo of tho quartz lead
around Grass Valley. When ho arrived
hero ho had seventy thousand dollars
and he bought up quite a number of
claims and spent his money freely in
prospecting them. lie worked with a
buoyant heart, confident that his labor
and investments would bo remuner
ated. Ho had a charming wifo and
four bright children. Ono thousand
after another of his money was sunk
into the ground until finally his last
dollar was gone, and from outward ap
pearances he was no nearer getting it
back than he was when ho started.
He became despondent and while la
boring under a fit of mental depression
ho prepared a draught of deadly poison,
gave a drink to his wifo and to each of
his children, and then after waiting
long enough to satisfy himself that
they were past recovery ho partook of
the poison and laid down to die with
thoso ho loved. Beforo their bodies
were cold they were found by a man
from ono of tho mines who had como
to inform him that a large vein of rich
rock had just been uncovered. He and
his had passed beyond the cares of this
world and had no further use for
earthly treasure, but the lead that was
struck tho day of his death turned out
a rich ono and yielded gold enough in
subsequent years to have made him in
dependently rich.
George —I hear there is a movement
in Boston to do away with the chape
ron.
Jack—Do you mean to say that they
have ever had chaperons in Boston?
"O, yes, plenty of them."
"What do they do?"
"Well, they keep tho fires going, fill
tho hot-water bottles, thaw out frozen
ears, and soon."—N. Y. Weekly.
No do.
Why didn't you invite Cholly to stay
for lunch?"

NATURE'S HANDIWORK.
A Wonderful Cask of Rock In the Moun
tains of Arizona.
For many years Heidelberg* universi
ty has had the honor of owning* tho
larg*cst barrel, or "tun," as they call
it, in the world. They have had tho
honor, although it does not really bo
long to them, for Arizona has a barrel
that makes theirs fado into insignifi
cance.
Tho one at Heidelberg will not hold
liquid, neither will tho one in Arizona.
In this they are tho same, but are dif
ferent in many other ways.
Arizona's barrel is the work of na
ture, and it is on a high peak of moun-
TIIE LARGEST BARREL IN THE WORLD.
tain, about five miles from Agnas Cal
lentas, which is in the Catalina moun
tains, about sixteen miles from a rail
road.
The barrel is one of those peculiar
rock formations and is about 200 feet
high, and the top of it is at least 2,000
feet above the valley. It can be seen
for miles boforo the traveler gets to
it, and its appearance is most deceiv
ing. It requires no effort of the imag
ination to see tho largo utensil of Bac
chus perched on its peak with a, glasß
under a faucet as if ready to be filled.
A large fissure in a certain spot forma
a bunghole. It does not look like a bar
rel unless seen from the plain; on all
other sides it is simply a rugged rock.
It is a soft granite formation of vol
canic origin, and is crumbling to pieces
all the time. It is so soft that half a
dozen mon with picks could knock it to
pieces in a few days. But it has had
its present form for centuries, and will
no doubt keep It until all who can now
see it have passed away.
COAL IN WEST VIRGINIA.
Many Miles of Valuable Land Owned by
Ignorant Half-Naked People.
A geologist who has been making a
study of Wyoming, Raleigh and Logan
counties in West Virginia, says that
tho coal deposits average five feet in
thickness over an area of more than
one thousand square miles, ne saw
out-croppingsof coal rising to a height
of twenty-five feet and extending for
miles along the sides of the mountains.
On Thatcher's creek in Logan county
he measured a vein of coal twenty
seven feet in thickness. All this land
is now in the hands of capitalists.
"Mile after mile of it," as he says,
"has been owned since tho first settle
ment of the rogion by families, tho
male members of which could hardly
muster enough clothes to wad a gun,
whose wives went barefooted wintex
and summer, and whose children never
saw either tho inside of a schoolhouso
or of a church. Traveling five or six
miles along "frap Hill valley without
seeing any signs of civilization, I
reached a log touse, where I found a
family named Ross. The husband was
absent hunting, but the wife and sev
eral bright-eyed children greeted me,
furnished dinner and directed me on
my way. Tho wife told rae she had
never seen a larger town than Logan
Courthouse with its two dozen houses,
and the children had novcr seen a
school book."
