Thursday, November 3, 1949 ADDITIONAL SPORTS Carrolltown High School Pins 23-7 Defeat On Altoona High ‘B’ Team Vince Malloy Crosses For 2 Scores Friday The Mountaineers of Carroll- town High School staged a rip- roaring comeback on Friday af- ternoon when they defeated the Altoona High School “B” team, 23-7, in a game played at Man- sion Park, Altoona. The Moun- taineers now have a record of three wins against five defeats. Carrolltown got off to a fast start when they recovered an Al- toona fumble on the Altoona 33 yard line, on the first scrimmage play of the game. After three running plays the winners pushed the ball to the Altoona 17. On the next play Carrolltown fumbled and Altoona recovered on their own 18. Following three plays, Altoona went into punt formation and a bad pass from center saw the ball in the end zone, pushing the Mountaineers ahead, 2-0, on a safety. On the following kickoff Bob Volk took the ball on his own 20 yard line and fought his way to the Carrolltown 43. Then the loser’s intercepted a Mountaineer pass and after gaining little yardage through the tight Car- rolltown defense, punted to the Carrolltown 10 yard line. Bob Volk then smashed through cen- ter to his own 16 and Vince Mal- loy, on the next play, went to the Carrolltown 29 on an end run. On the next play Vince Malloy whipped a 19 yard pass to Ned Westrick, who caught the ball on his own 45 and raced up the side- lines to the enemy 26. The fol-| lowing play placed the oval on! the enemy 13 where Quarterback Vince Malloy smashed through) center to paydirt. Pat Switzler | chalked up the extra point when | he caught a short pass from Malloy in the end zone. Red Buck booted the ensuing kickoff to the enemy 6 yard line, where it rolled Altoona, after gaining no yard- age in three tries, went into punt formation. The punt was blocked, however, as the whole Mountain- eer line charged through, and Rightend Ned Westrick fell on the ball in the end zone for the third Carrolltown score. The hard charging of Fullback Bob Volk, made good the extra point. The Mountaineers started to roll in the opening minutes of the third frame, taking the ball from their own 20 and driving to the Altoona 20, where Altoona rallied and held Carrolltown on downs. Altoona. then started a drive from their 20 yard line and as the third period ended Altoona advanced the ball to the Carroll- | town 10 yard line. On the second play of the final chapter the Little Mountain Lions scored as Cletus Weamer hit the double stripe from one yard out. Dick Cellini scored the seventh point on a center plunge. The Mountaineers, however, came fighting back as they took the kickoff on their own 9 yard line and with the perfect block- | ing and interference of the Car- rolltown line and the fine and| shifty running of Vines Malloy, Jim Eckenrode, Pat Switzler and Bob Volk, they placed the oval on | | the Altoona 9 yard line, where | Vince Malloy went over standing | up on an 1 off tackle play.
