62 Boys Vie for Positions
On Patton High Grid Squad
First Game Sept. 10
With Homer City High
The Patton High School Pan-
thers will play a nine-game grid
schedule this season with six of
their scheduled games at home.
The site for the home games will
probably be decided later this
week, due to the fact that the
Patton Athletic Field is still un-
dergoing construction.
The Patton Squad, coached by
Pat Marquette, will open on Sat-
urday, Sept. 10, with Homer City
and close on Nov. 10 with Cherry
Tree. Homer City is a new team
on the Panther schedule taking
the place of a tilt with Mahaffey
last season.
Coach Marquette announced
that 62 candidates, four of whom
are lettermen, reported for pre-
season practice last Thursday.. He
also stated that the light weight
'49 Panther Squad with be made
up chiefly of Freshmen and
Sophomores. scheduled games on home ground,

Neat 9th Inning Triple Play Sunday
By Carrolltown Fails to Win Game
Emeigh defeated Carrolltown
last Sunday by a score of 16-13,
but were unsure of their lead as
Carrolltown came through in the
9th inning with a triple-play,
being the only one in this dis-
trict.for the past several years.
The Carrolltown Nine pulled
the neat three-out play in the
first half of the 9th at First-
taseman Bede Lantzy caught a
infield grounder and heaved it to
Catcher Ceschini who in turn
threw it to Second-baseman Steve

Games to Be Played
Friday Evenings
The Carrolltown High School
Mountaineers will play a nine-
game football schedule for the
1949 season with seven of their
their season on. Sept. 9 with
Spangler and close on Nov. 4
with Barnesboro. Both games will
be played under the lights at the
Carrolltown High School Athletic
field.
The Mountaineers started their
three-week pre-season training
last Thursday with approximately
30 players reporting, seven of
whom are lettermen.
Lilly High School is a new-
comer on the Blue and White
schedule, taking the place of a
game played with Houtzdale last
season. Patton and Altoona JV'’s
are the only two teams being
played on foreign soil.
All home games will be played
on Friday nights and all away
tilts on Friday afternoons.

Mosscreek Drops
To League Leader
Benscreek moved into the finals
of the Cambria County Industrial
League Shaughnessy playoff ser-
ies by whipping Mosscreek in a
pair of opening round games over
the past week end.
The regular-season champions
followed up a 4-2 win in last Sat-
urday’s game with an easier 11-6
win last Sunday. They will enter-
tain Ebensburg in the first of the
Seven runs in the last 2 innings
clinched last Sunday's game for
the visitors, Yatisin led Bens-
creek’s 15-hit attack with three
safeties. The summary:

tained their nip and tuck battle
for first place in the Cambria-
Clearfield Valley League with
double victories in the past week
end action.
League leading Coalport rapped
Madera, 8-1 last Saturday and
then edged past Beccaria, 6-5,
last Sunday to make their record
12 victories against one lone set- |
back. Blandburg with a 10-2
mark, stopped Irvona, 8-1 last
Saturday and swamped Morann,
21-5 last Sunday.
In other Saturday games, Bec-
caria topped Morann, 9-5, and
Janesville slipped past Fallen-
timber, 6-5. Last Sunday Janes-
ville rapped Dysart 13-3 and
Madera blanked Ramey, 10-0.
Two all-star games will fea-
ture the league’s annual picnic on
Sept. 18 at Allmansville Springs. |
In one of the tilts, a team select- |
ed from the Cambria County sec-
tion of the loop will oppose a
team from Clearfield County. The
other game will be a contest be-
tween the Valley League all-stars
and a picked squad from the
Northern Cambria County Indus-
trial League.
Madey Sets Pace
In Co. PNA League
Madey of Gallitzin continues to
set a sizzling pace for hitters in
the Cambria County PNA League
with an astounding .500 average.
He has rapped out 29 hits in 58
trips to the plate and has scored
27 runs, giving him the lead in
those two departments. Five home
runs, tops in the league, are in-

Gallitzin also has the most dou-
ble plays, 8, and four pitchers are
tied with 4-and-1 records.

top ten of the league and their
averages are: Dziabo with a .389,
Tedora with a .375, and Bernaz-
zolli with a .371.
A league meeting will be held
this Friday in the Franklin White
Eagles Hall at 8 p. m., to make
arrangements for the playoffs of
the league and the annual ban-
quet and dance which will be held

2 Losses On Colver
Ebensburg advanced into the
finals of the Cambria County In-
dustrial League Shaughnessy
playoffs by taking a pair of last
week end victories over Colver.
The winners scored an 8-7 win
last Saturday and a 6-3 win last
Sunday. They will meet Benscreek
this Thursday.
Herm Duman limited the losers
to six scattered hits and single
runs in the third, 6th and 9th in
Sunday’s contest. He struck out
13 batters.
A four-run 5th gave Ebensburg
a 6-1 lead that Duman protected.
Gonfloff and Parkins each collect-
ed two hits to spark the winners
