Donald Dinehart,
Leora Weakland
Head Mardi Gras
The Senior Mardi Gras Ball is
wel on the way to becoming tra-
dition at Patton High. Begun in
47, when the senior class spon-
sors, Mr. Marquette and Miss
Garrity sought something unique
and colorful for the senior dance,
the idea clicked and a court was
elected. When the 1948-49 school
calendar was drawn up, a special
place was put on the calendar for
the 1949 Senior Mardi Gras Ball.
Enthusiastic campaigns were
carried on in various classes for
court attendants and elections
were held. However, the names of
the King and Queen were kepi
secret. The big event took place
in the Eagles’ Ballroom Jan. 20.
Four singing waiters, Gene For-
ney, Jack Leary, Roger Schenk
and Martin Carl first sang ‘“Whis-
pering” and ‘“4-Leaf Clover,” ac-
companied by Marjorie Long.
Then came the Royal Court.
Edward Donahue, as herald, an-
nounced the appearance of the
Court with a fanfare from his
trumpet, and the King and Queen,
Donald Dinehart and Leora Weak-
land, were crowned, and the en-
tire Court performed the grand
March. Later the entire assembly
danced the Virginia Reel, partici-
pated in two cake walks, and
thoroughly enjoyed the evening.
Donald Dinehart, king; Leora Weak-
land, queen; Richard Hood, prince;
Marjorie Swope, princess; Eleanor
Dunbar, Virginia Lawson, Eunelda Be-
arer and Delores Drass, ladies in walt-
ing; Walter Wilkinson, court Jester

Class og 1949).
