Meet Honors Won
By Penelec Team

Hoover,
The second place Beaverdale
team was composed of Edward
Frank, captain; Richard Stagers,
Stanley Belinda, Ross Hart, Matt
Jeremias, Edward Roberts and
Lester Bateman.
Members of the third place
team from Marsteller were War-
ren Good, captain; James Laird,
Joe Pesarchick, Peter Lafko, Wal-
ter Weakland and Mike Sheredy.
Marsteller also won the Tenth
District honors, and in Dennis
Keenan's Fifteenth District, the
Barnes and Tucker No. 15 mine,
Barnesboro, were winners.
A total of 38 teams from the
nine districts of the State Depart-
ment of mines in Central Pennsyl-
vania participated in the affair.
Mine rescue and first-aid teams
were commended highly by state
and union officials for the out- |
standing work they performed at |
their respective operations and
while under the heavy strain of
competitive events.
Secretary Maize said he was
happy to see such a 8reat inter-
est in mine safety work. He told
the resuce squads they were very
well trained for the difficult tasks
they must perform deep under the
ground when accidents occur.
Charles O'Neill, New York, the
head of the Central Pennsylvania
Coal Producers’ Assn. declared
the operators are as much inter-
ested in first aid and safety work
as the workers. He said operators
are offering additional opportun- |
ities to young men by setting up
mining classes in colleges. He cit-
ed the course at St. Francis Col-
| 1ege, Loretto, as one of those be-
| ing sponsored by operators.

Business Session Highlights
Excessive and often unneces-
sary speeding of fire trucks was
a topic during the men's session.
It was pointed out that drivers of
fire trucks can break the law on
the way to fires, but on return
trips must observe all traffic reg-
ulations. Speakers were Harvey
J. Mulligan of Patton and Ray
Himes of Portage.
Mr. Himes and Oscar Zane of
Richland Twp. gave reports of
the resolutions committee and Mr.
Zane reported on last year's
state firemen’s convention.
Over 600 delegates attended the
annual banquet held Wednesday
evening at St. Bernard's Church
Hall. The Hastings High School
Band, guests at the affair, led
the delegates through the streets
of the town to the hall. The meal
was prepared by the Hastings
