PITTSBURGH PIRATES
SPECIALIZE IN SPEED
Unquestionably, one of baseball's
[ most spectacular and popular fea-
| tures is speed, and that is among
the reasons why the Pittsburgh
| Club always stands very high in
| public favor. Speed is always a
prominent characteristic of them.
The Pirates and fleetness of foot
are synonymous, and when the
Bucs appear on any playing field
the spectators may expect to see
one of the greatest groups of base-
ball greyhounds ever assembled.
Manager Frankie Frisch himself
| always specialized in speed. That
was how he came to be called the
“Fordham Flash,” being active in
both baseball and football at that
| university, and later in major lea-
gue ball as a New York Giant and
a St. Louis Cardinal.
Frisch makes it a point to seek
speed in men playing under him,
stressing an extra base on a hit
and putting as many runs as pos-
sible across the plate. The results
will be seen when he turns his
whippets loose this year.
Jim Russell is one of the fastest
men in baseball. Invited to compete
in a special Purdue indoor meet a
few years ago he was not far from
the record in an indoor dash, even
though handicapped by full base-
ball regalia.
Lee Handley is another who flies
over the ground, as is Jack Bar-
rett. Swiftness is a point for which
Jimmy Brown always has been
noted. Alf Anderson was a track
man in college. Frank Zak takes
nobody's dust, and Al Gionfriddo
| (of Dysart) is one more who be-
longs in the Jack Rabbit class. Bob
Elliott, Bill Cox, Tom O’Brien .

‘THREE-WEEK’ RULE
FOR FOOTBALL TILTS
|
|
| Harrisburg that: “Having been
given a year in which to adjust
contracts, the Pennsylvania High
| Schools this year will be prohibited
| from playing their first football
| game within three weeks after the |
| start of practices, except in the |
| case of night games, which may be
| played Friday of the third week of
| practice.”
| A new rule, which actually be- |
| came effective on Jan. 1, 1945, also
| prohibits schools from starting
| grid training before Aug. 18 at any
! place, either a camp on on school
fields, Executive Secretary Ed-
mund Wicht announces.
Exceptions Last Year
Exceptions were made to this
rule last year because some schools
already had scheduled games for
early dates, but athletic officials
who are currently completing the
school schedules for 1946, are now
warned there will be no exceptions
allowed this year.
According to this rule, the
earliest date on which games can
be played this year is Sept. 6. Th
teams which do not open their
i practice season until Sept. 1 must
and therefore cannot play before
Friday night, Sept. 20.
Schools have the privilege of be-
ginning practice on any date after
Aug. 18 this year, but in each in-
stance they must have practices
for three weeks before they can
play.

(ON FILM SCORECARDS
| Thirteen of New York's boxing
{writers recently were shown mo-
tion pictures of the first Louis-
Conn bout. The film was shown by
i State Athletic Commission Chair-
| man Eddie Eagan. Eleven of the
| writers voted that, under the N. Y.
| commission’s new point-scoring
system, Conn was out in front at
the end of 12 completed rounds.
The other two came out with
scorecards even on rounds. One of
the two cards showed Louis out in
front on points and the other called
it even on points. The balloting
was at the request of Eagan, who
showed the film as a demonstra-
tion of the point-scoring system
installed a year ago for scoring
New York fights.
One of the writers voting for
Conn says his scorecard the night
of the 1941 fight in which Louis
knocked out Conn in the 13th
round, had both fighters even after
12 completed rounds.
The 13 scorecards gave Conn a
total of 111 points to 94, and 84
rounds to 67, with five heats even.
Of course, none of this applies for
their second fight in New York on
June 19.
