Accident.
A, Mrs. Frciss a German woiuno aged
about sixty years was killed by tbo mail
train west on tne 1'. & K. II. H. last Sat
urday iiioriiinr. Mrs. V. had been to
morning mass at St. Mary's and was re
turning to her home when tho accident
occurred. It ncems that she was walk
ing along the track about one fourth of a
mile east ef the " Priest's mill " where
tho R. 11. descends at a grado of some
fifty.two feet to tho mile. She was con
cealed ro n tho view of tho engineer,
until the locomotive was within a very
ishort distance of her, when the engine
was at once reversed and signal to brake
given, but too late. The corner of the
" bumper " struck ber upon tho right
shoulder killing her at once. When
the train was stopped aDd tho passen
gers went back, sho was found lying in
the ditob. besido the track wi'hout ap.
parent hurt but perfectly dead. Her
rosary remaiued clasped in her hands
and from her appearance it seemed that
6he had been hurried to tho presence of
her God while in the midst of her de
votions. A coroner's jury was empaneled by
L. ollmcr Jtisq. ot ft. Wary s, and a
verdict rendered exonerating the e
neor and conductor from all blame.

Is the title of a new work issued by
the National Publishing Company, of
which a descriptive notice will b9 found

read it, aud willingly bear testimony to
its value. We have acquired more in

physical character and resources of tho

the Missouri river and tho Pacific ocean,
from its perusal, than we had ever re.

Escaped.
" Malono's Castle " was tho scene of
another escape last Thursday night.
John McCarty, the burglar conGued up
on the charge of enteriog tho house of
A. Willis and stealing some 85,000,
walked quietly out and took his depart
urc for parts unknown. Ho was locked
in his cell as usual, but after the jailer
had retired, Mc. opened the doors using
no tools other than his hands, or at most
a pine stick, aud havrng reached the
jail yard, repeated his former escape by
scaling the wall by aid of his bed clothes.
Some body must be reeponsiblo for the
insecurity of tho locks which has per
mitted this daring burgler to be again
loosed to prey upon the public. Who
is it?
Indian Summer.
The dry fccasou now cormencing is
what we usually term the Indiau sum
luer, which generally lasts about a fort
night. Tho severe frosts we hao had
during the last two weeks, almost every
night in succession, indicate the sure
approach of winter, the inverted year,
when the sun hangs on the farthest
verge of heaven, and senrco spreads
through ether the dejeotcd day. Now
is the time that should not be lost by
those who have to glean the teeming pro.
duct's of the earth, while yet the last
fold of autumn's mantle rests on tho
groves and hazy hills.
Sevival.
For tho past three weeks, the Ad
vents have been holding a protracted
meeting near Mr. Muycrs in Fox tp.,
aud with marked success : 45 or 50 per
sons having united with that church.
Robbery.
On lust Thursday night, tho fctore ot
Ilydo k Reed ou Mead Run was enter.
cd and gooJs and money to tho amount
of over 5250 was taken therefrom. A
little dog was in tho storo at the time
aud was found next morning with his
head almost fevered from his body. I
is supposed to bo tho work of some un
known proleiisionul burglars.
