Broke Jail.
The burglar who for the past four
Weeks has bceu boarding at Malonc's
Castle, took occasion to make his escape
about two o'clock p iu.'od SuuJay. He
bad been ullowcd a short liberty in the
jail yard and immediately set himself at
work to oniry out plans that had been
laid before. He removed the sheets
from his bed, tied them together and
fastened one end to the bars of au up
per cell window; then descending totho
yard he climbed to the window seat and
placing a piece of base board that he
bad wrenched from its plnce, from the
window to the top of the wall, ho crawl,
ed along it, let himself down on the out
side nod took to the woods. Although
the point of his decent was in full view
of the Hyde House it happened that he
was not seen, and it was ten or fifteen
minutes before his absence was discover
ed. The citizens at once took measures
to effect his recapture, and Hon. O. D.
Messenger and James II. Hagcrty took
the road to Spring Creek iu which di
rection it was ascertained ho had gone.
They arrived at Mr. Thomas Irvin's
just after dark and while searching the
school house near that gentleman's resi
dence tho object of their search np.
proached and was again in custody. Ilo
was safely landed in his cell before day
light and there he will probable rsmain
until he starts to take up his residence
at Allegheny City.
Improvements.--
It always gives us pleasure to note the
imDrovementfl of our town, which, of
lute, both in number and manuer of es.
ccution, far exceed the utmost we had
ever expected. That which, a few
years since, was hut au insignificant
hamlet in the midst of a gloomy forest,
u now an iinportant'and populous empo
rium of trade. We must confess that
it is not to tho monotouous routine of
plodding and limbering, which, till the
last few years was all that teuded to
make tho place lively, (though it could
not help bcinn dull) that these vast
strides in niouorn improvements arc due
Kailroads, those belts of power that cir
cle ali (ho land, traverse every section of
tho county. It is chiefly their iuflu-
enco which has conduced to our preseut
ptiite, and which, in attracting multi
tudes, prom'ses yet better for the fu
ture. At a degree of progress propor
tionate to the present, wo exaggerate
nothing when we say, that in a very few
years llidgway will be, for elegance
and splendor, the cynosure of travelers,
a Fifth Avenue transported by tnagio
to the forests of Western Pennsylvania.
To substantiate these remarks, v,-e would
refer the reader to tho series of noble
Btructurci in progress of ereotion : to
tho Episcopal Church, and residenoo of
J)r. I'ordwoll, on Centre street, and those
of Mcs.-.rs. Cooke and Colo on South
street, and also to tho water-works and
grading of roads, as well as other addi
tions needless to recount.
Good Business.--
Our friend I). 0. Oyster, Proprietor
ofthollylo House, is doing juito ti
businpfs. The arrivals at this house
from thcOlh to the llih of'lhib month,
numbers something over one hundred.
1). C. keeps a No. 1 house, and will spare
no pains to render his guests comfortu.
Me. And the most important of all;
his charges are reasonable. He iLo
keeps a night watch for the accommo
dation of passengers, to and from the
ui''ht utid mui uiiig trains.
