Sr. Marys, Juno 25, 1807
Emtor of tue Press :
Dear Sir. Vie
-were not a little surprii-cd at the article
in the Elk Advocate, signed " Cata
mount," cmtitiieuting somewhat sevoio.
ly on some noise m ado by outside par
ties, on the return ol'tho " Aipine B 15.
Club " to St. Marys, and hoping the Al
pines will be able to explain away, f c.
As the demonstrations complained of
was made by no member ol the Club,
we have uothing to explain, and dis.
'niit-s the subject as unworthy of notice.
In reference to the courtesy of the
Catamount club, we can safely say wo
were the recipients of a very small
fchnrc of it. When tho game was con
eluded, nut one of their number catue
near the hotel to say a Iriendly word
tc us, and we were allowed to depart
without receiving tho least attention,
nd all this after a special invitatiou
had been sent to us that if we " would
come to Ridireway to tlay the secoud
uiatch it would bo at their expense,'
now if we remember correctly, tho Al.
jine boys paid their fares to and from
Ridjjewav, contrary to what had been
promised.
One word more, when a Club will ac
cuse a gentleman, who is every way
worthy of the respect and eouCJonce
of his fellow citizens, with " selling the
game for part of a keg of lager," which
the Catamounts requested us to take to
Iinl''ewav. promised to pay fur, but
forgot to do it, it strikes us thut they
rhuuW f-ay very little about e.Jitrtety,
or geiilbuianly conduct. There arc
exceptions to the fureiroini: a few in
the Club that our remarks do not allud
to. " Alpine."
For t lie F.ik Advocate.
Riikiway, Pa., July 1, 1S07.
Mil. Liutok : A Catamount rc
fiucsts short space in your columns to
reply to the above squib faun the Cam
("( County Press, lu the first place
the Cameron c. unty paper was not the
proper medium through which "lievan-
tes allegd I to have becu snsta'ucd in
Elk county khou'.d be ventilated ; and,
in the second place, the wretched or
thography ami still moio wretched
grammar which 'Alpine' employs in
his lugubrious Jcreiiiad, almost deters
poor, defeated ' Catamouut ' from at
tempting a defence oi his Club. In no
ticing our complaint as to the Alniucs
on their return home, having given
three cheers Jit their own, and three
groans for the Catamount Club, Alpine
tuys, '' As the demon.stialii.ns complain
cd of was made by no iLcmbor, &c , tC'C,
wo dismiss the subject as unworthy of
notice." That is perfectly right, AI
piuc. A tutTe contemptible fact never
hud existence ; members if the Cata
mount Club, however, beg leavo to re
fuse to accept your summary denial, and
transparent white washing of your con
duct as aircnding the matter in any res'
pect. Reading further, we find in the
Fecond verso of the first chapter of " Al
pine," that they were the recipients of a
very small share of Catamount courtesy j
that wheu tho ga:nc was concluded, not
one of the Catamounts camo near the
hocl to say a friendly word, and that
they were allowed to depart without re.
cciving tho least attention, &e., &c
Every courtesy was shown to the
Alpine Club which was iu the power of
tho Catamount. After tho game had been
played and 6upper been had, the follow
ing Catamounts walked up to tho hotel
with the Alpines and spent as much of
their time as was possible 1st baseman,
2nd baseman, 3d baseman, riht fielder
pitcher, umpire and scorer. Some of
them accompanied tho Alpiucs to .the
depot. The Alpine Club wcro under no
expense whatever at tho Ilyda House
not only wcro the suppers for their
Club on each occation paid (or, but sev
eral outsiders who camo with them were
treated iu like manner. The Alpine
boy did not pay their fares to and from
Kidiiway either time. I hey camo to
Jlidgway both times on freight traits.
ttud paid nothing. Tho Catamount
Club however, aro willing to reimburse
the Alpiucs at any time, cot only for
what ezpeuses they may have under
gone to the matter of railroad fares, but
also for tho limited amouut of treating
they may have done, on presentation of
bills for the tamo. The Club does not
accuso any gentleman, after the fashion
charged by Alpine j neither did tho
Catamounts ever order a krg of lager, or
any kind of liquor whatever, through
A
the Alpiucs ; but fur what the Alpines
did bi ins:- tho Catamounts will pay.

Cool. Au amusing iucident occured
at one of the hotels in this village a few

Tho propiietor, however, knowing his

requisite amount, 0o landlord hastened
to comply witli his customer's request,
and soon had the bottle filled and tet.

ensued :
