other end, and it was necessary for ns to
travel clear across the island. The ride
was picturesque, from the narrow
(fnnge railroad with a little engine to the
ever clumping scenory, which is magnifi
cent. Ex-President Roosevelt visited it,
looked upon it with rapture and said,
"This, surely, is America's Alps."
But the people aypeal to you more than
anything else. This Island surely Is the
land of the "Manana," which means
"tomorrow," because the people always
promise to do things by saying, "Manana."
The people here are a mongrel race,
being intermingled with Indian, Spanish
and ;negro blond, with more negro blood
than anything else. It is very hard to find
pure Castilian blood in any family on the
island. But that docs not seem to mar
their tempers. They are hot headed and
. quick to fight, but it is just like a rush of
Mood to the head, over in a minute. They
ape the Americans in every way possible
and the whole town seems to judge one
down here and if you are found wanting,
they soon tell you about it. They are like
the Southern negro, happy all the year
around. The people do not do any more
work than just enough to keep body and
soul together. Every Sunday morning it
Is very easy to find four or fire dances
going on among the better class as woll as
the poorer people. These dances are held
In their own homes, and it seems impos
sible that so many people can dance in the
rooms;
The school children here are much more
. easily controlled than those in the States,
and they all seem to have inherited the art
of flattery from their Latin ancestry.
They all have an intense desire to learn,
especially the English language. ' They aro
generous to a fault. They bring in oranges,
bananas and all kinds of tropical fruit.
You can get orunges very cheap, from 8 to
-2.) for 1 cent, varying in different parts of
Hie island, and. 85 cents for a bunch of
bananas is a munificent price.
Aguadilla. the name of the town that we
lire located in, means "fresh water,"
because thU was where Columpus landed
October 8. 1 IW2. to get fresh water for his
. ships. It is a b.iantiful little city of obout
20,000, but it docj not cover as much area
at Reynoldsville, because, u great number
of the poovor c' asses live in small one
roomed thatched huts and from ten to a
dozen people seem to thrive there. The
j The . i -uih rati is very high from
1 aberculosis on this account. Every town
t.own here has a large central plasa, where
. 16 people- congregate very evening. In
vhe larger towns they have bund concert
iwice a week, and we have the pleasure of
listening to a few in San Juau. It was a
picturesque sight. Men in white flannels
:tnd liuen and the women in all the latest
styles and alt colors of the 'rainbow. It
ortainly was an animating sight, with
their unceasing promenading from one end
of the plaza to the other.' The bands
played the popular airs and the selections
that received the greatest applause were
f m "The Merry Widow." 1 would like
t j take you there for the finish of the
,tiio program. I would like to be able to
Ihrill you as their last piece thrilled us,
JTiieconoert was, oyer at 10 00 p. m. Just
before their last selection everything was
1 n a seething cauldron of talk, so It seemed
to me, when suddenly the band seemed to
say;'
?0 say 1 can 'you see by th,dnwn's earl
iieht;,
' V.'litso proudly we hailed at thetwi
light'slasXtf Baita;'
The promenade became still and all
thought of talking was banished from
evory mind, Puerto Rican as well as
American, for the Ricans seem to realize
what it mcuns. Every American lifted his
hat and involuntarily their eyes wandered
to "Old Glory" as she floated over Morro
Castle. And tlroy stood thus at attention
until the last strains of that grand old
tune had died away. Every American
heart has gone back across 1,500 miles of
blue sea, where that flag stands as an
emblem of eternal freedom that we hold
dear; and it is also the emblem of
freedom to the Puerto Rican mind. I
wish that every school child in Reynolds
ville could have felt as I did, and that
they, instead of passing the old flag with
out a glance, would take of their hats and
reverence it as we should reverence "Old
Glory".

THE LECTURE OF BYRON PIAII.
The lecture of Byron C. Piatt in As"
sombly hall Friday "night was unusual in
its plain dealing with a subject usually
tabooed, through prudery, in polite society.
He had beon advertised to speak on "The
Mass vs. The Man,"' but at his own
request was allowed to give instead
"American Morals." He handles the
subject without gloves and points out not
only the evil that exists but the causes
that produce it and which will, in his
estimation, ultimately break up the
I American home if not checked. Piatt is
1 eloquent, but the force of his lecture lies
in its painful truthfulness. To deliver
such a lecture before an audience composed
for the most part of the feminine sex, and
a large portion of them of Immature years,
is somewhat daring, but in line with Piatt's
own belief that the safe guard of American
womanhood is not innocence but virtue and
knowledge. Innocence, he states, is nothing
but ignorance, and the direct cause of the
downfall of hundreds of young men and
women annually. The lecture was well
received by local people and perhaps the
highest compliment that could be Dald to.lt
was the;'practically,S,unanlmons'l approval
voiced by the older people present after it
was over. .
