It Is necessary tlint the pioneer be
a tniiu of Infinite resource, who can Uo

Suniuol Sioper, one of the early set

tonlsbtug versotllliy Is recorded by S.
O. Wood In "Taverns and Turnpikes
of Itlnndfiird."
Colonel Sioper, among other things.

out John Waldo Wood's flax one sen

He seems to have mnde shoe, nnc
garments for his family and for his
neighbors. For linos Loom Is' young
son, who whs bound out to him, lie

over wl'ta charges for the treatment
of y ung horses. In the account of
Ellphalet Thompson In the year 1772,
along with a "frying I'ann" and "1

NEVER OPENING FLOWERS.
A Largs Number of Plants Bear Cleis
togamous Blossoms.
The never opening flower, or, as bot
anists call It, cleistogamy, is well illus
trated by the case of the common
sweet violet The familiar purple,
sweet scented blossom, which to most
people Is the rlolot flower, hardly ever
produces any seed, but altogether un
seen by most people It produces a
number of minute, sceutless and col
orless flowers which never open.
These are self fertilized and produce
abundant seed. The word clelstog
auious expresses the fact that the
fertilization takes place without the
opening of the flower and hence with
out the agency of Insects. Such never
opening flowers occur in a large num
ber of plants, sometimes along with
blossoms of the ordinary sort aud
sometimes without tbeni. It is a dis
puted point, however, whether there
Is any plant which in all circumstances
will produce nothing but elelstogamous
Dowers.
There are nevertheless a number
which normally produce nothing else.
As regards fertility, the seeds pro
duced by the elelstogamous flowers are
never Inferior to those of the ordinary
Dlossoms. In some cases they are su
perior and in others they are the only
seed produced by the plant
It has been found that the amouut of
cleistogamy varies with the height of
the plains. The shortest bear clels
toganiic flowers only, and those a lit
tle taller have a few small open flow
ers In addition to the closed ones. The
tallest plants have larger open flow
ers, with only a few clelstogamlc

Gold In Ancient Rome.
William Jacob In bis "History of the
Precious Metals" estimates from the
accounts given by the Roman writers
that lu the relgu of Augustus, the first
of the emperors, when Rome was at
the height of its power, the amount of
gold In the Roman empire was nearly
$2,000,000,000. This vast treasure had
been gathered chiefly by conquest from
various nations of Europe, Asia aud
'Africa. There had beeu extensive
mines In Spaiu and in the Atlas moun
tains of north Africa, but their yield
lii the wealth of kings and of cities In
Asia and Egypt bad been despoiled
and -carried away to enrich the con
querors. Our First Money.
The first United States money was
amide in 1780, but instead of bearing
the faces of leading statesmen it bore
only the face of Liberty. Some few
coins were stamped with the face of
Washington and are highly valued by
collectors. The first coins struck by
the Dnlted States mint were tome ball
dimes In 1792. The first United States
dimes were struck in France from old
mUrer family plate furnished by Wash
ington and were known as "Martha
JWcsbtngton dimes" from the fact that
tlie liberty bead was adapted to that
ot the president's wife. New York

' AN ODD EXPERIMENT, ' '
It Explains Hew Cyclones Drive Straws
Througn Tree Trunks;
, If a needle Is shoved Into a Cork tin-
til just the tip end shows oh the uppo-
site side and the needle Is then broken
off so that the upper end Is flush with
or hidden under the top surface ou the
cork an Interesting thing . may be
shown, known ns the Increase ot pres
sures. If this cork he now pi need
tieedle point down ou n copper cent or
other small coin a light blow ou top of
the cork with u hammer will drive the
needle thrown I the copper. The expla
nation Is ns follows:
Everything fins Its limits of resist
ance, n ii ( 1 we may define this In terms
to the square ltlch that will overcome
it. Take u teu pound weight and place
it on a surface of two square lucties-,
the pressure Is evidently live pounds
to Hie square Inch. Now lake away
one of (lie square inches, und there is
Just ns evident ly u pressure ot ten
pounds to the square inch. Decrease
this surface to the dimensions ot a
needle point und put n live pound
blow on the needle head The pres
sure to the square inch at the point Is
tremendous So, of course, it can be
forced through almost anything, pro
vided the needle is kept from break
ing. For this purpose the cork is sup
plied, which keeps the ueedle from
stnrtlng to bend, having for this pur
pose what might be called an iutlnlte
ly Inclined plane or straight line.
This phenomenon explains several
things of frequent occurrence. Cy
clones sometimes drive straws through
trees three and four feet thick. The
compressed air round the straw keeps
it from bending, and the enormous
force driving It forces it through.
Of course lu the case of the needle
and. lu fact any pointed Instrument
gradually getting larger from the point
the advantage of the inclined plane Is
made use of In continuing the motion.
As it takes much less force to roll a
barrel up an inclined plank Into a door
than to lift It directly from the ground
to the door, so we can separate two
things or two parts of the same thing
easier with a pointed instrument
(which Is the same thing as a round
wedgei than with an Instrument of the
same size all the way. St Louis Re
public. INSECT RESISTANCE.
No Such Thing as Any Animal Having
More Than One Life.
All animals have the power to re
cover from Injury occasioned by shock
from being stunned, lusects are in
no sense mi exception to this, and
most of them possess whnt has beeu
called tenacity of life to a remarkable
degree. A butterfly will sail away with
a plu through Its body, an aut will go
floundering around after being cut In
two, aud all insects will quickly re
cover from a blow, eveu If such may
dent or break their external coverings
In such cases the Inside parts are
mostly out of use for a short time,
somewhat similar to the case of your
arm when you have struck the "funny
bone" or to your foot when ' It is
"asleep." But after a few moments'
rest the wasp can again resume Its
actions.
A wasp is well armored. Its exterior
covering is bard and almost unyield
ing. When It Is struck a severe blow
the soft delicate Inner parts yield to
the Impact; the nerves and muscular
tissues caunot operate lu unison, and
the Insect may be Bald to have been
rendered unconscious as well as inca
pable, for the "tulud" actions depend
upon its entire nervous system.
But there is no Buch thing as an ani
mal's having more than oue life. When
crushed, dismembered, poisoned or
smothered beyond recovery, when its
vital organs are injured so that tbey
cannot again resume their regular
uses, an Insect will die not In appear
ance, but really so. And this may re
sult from the weurlng out of Its active
vital organism, which may be called
old age, after sometimes only a few
days or weeks of life. Its one life bos
then beeu terminated beyond any
doubt St Nicholas.
Very Considerate,
A marriage advertisement Is publish

must fulfill the following conditions:
She must be beautiful in body, face
and mind and possess beautiful teeth
and hair of her own and not bought
articles. Besides German, she must
have a knowledge ot English and
French, be a musician- and have an
irreproachable reputation. "Other
faults," the philosopher of forty years
states, "will be overlooked."
