SHAPING A TREE.
The shaping of a tree should be
done when it is young. The practice
of allowing useless limbs to grow only
to be Rawed or chopped oft when the
tree is large is a mistake, as every
undesirable limb grown deprives the
other limbs of so much food and
nourishment. Begin with the first
year and train the tree to the shape
desired, leaving only such branches
as will be retained later on. Indian

WATERING AFTER FEEDING.
We have many times called atten
tion to the danger of watering horses
soon after feeding them grain. There
is great danger of colic or other ail
ment in such practices. This matter
has lately been put to a test by feed
ing a horse four quarts of oats and
immediately afterward giving the ani
mal water. The horse when killed
fifteen minutes after drinking the
water showed that the water had
washed three-quarters of the oats in
to the smaller intestines, while a
horse watered before being fed grain
and killed fifteen minutes afterward,
all the oats were found in the stomach
and digestion had already com
menced. Horses need more water In
hot weather than In cold and should
not be allowed to drink immediately
after a feed of grain. Weekly Wit
ness. FEEDING VALUE OF ALFALFA.
The feeding value of alfalfa is
largely in its chemical compound
known as protein; its extreme di
gestibility is another desirable quali
ty to be considered, and not least Is
its appetizing character. Not only do
all animals like it, but when given in
moderate quantities It seems to in
crease the general appetite for more
fat-making feeds. Steers beginning to
"fall off" on a heavy diet of corn will
come to their appetites after being
fed only a few pounds of alfalfa
dally, and will eat and assimilate
more corn than before. Alfalfa alone
Is not a fat-making feed. Animals
fed upon it grow in weight, but the
weight is principally of bone, blood
and muscle. It is without a sufficien
cy of fat and carbohydrates, and
these should be added in such feeds
as corn, corn meal, Kafir-corn, or
Kafir-corn meal; or to a limited de
gree even in corn Btover, sorghum or
millet. When alfalfa is fed alone all
the protein cannot be digested, and,
therefore, it is always economical to
add some carbonnceous foods. If ani
mals are to be fattened. From Co
burn's "The Book of Alfalfa."
THE PLACE OF GRAIN.
The Ohio station has been carry
ing on several investigations to de-,
termlne to what extent silage can be
made to take the place of grain in
feeding dairying cattle. Two rations
were fed carrying practically the
same amount of dry matter. In one
ration over fifty per cent, of this dry
matter was derived from -silage, and
less than eighteen per cent, was de
rived from grain. In the other ra
tion over fifty-seven per cent, of the
dry matter was derived from grain,
no silage being fed. The cows fed
the silage ration produced 96.7
pounds of milk and 6.08 pounds of
butter fat per hundred pounds of dry
matter. The cows fed the grain ra
tion produced 81.3 pounds of milk
and 8.9 pounds of butter fat per hun
dred pounds of dry matter. The cost
of feed per hundred pounds of milk
was 80.687 with the silage ration and
$1,055 with the grain ration. The
cost of feed per hundred pounds of
butter fat was 13.1 cents with, the
silage ration and 22.1 cents with the
grain ration. The average net profit
per cow per month (over cost of la
bor) was $5,864 with the silage, and
$2,465 with the grain ration.

INCREASING PHLOXES.
The late summer flowering phloxes
may be increased either by division
of the roots or by cuttings. In the
former method, break the roots into
small portions and plant them sepa

select young shoots about three inches
long from the outside of the clumps,
and root them in pots in a cold
frame. When well rooted, plant them

SAVING A DECAYING TREE.
State Zoologist Surface, of the
Pennsylvania Department of Agricul
ture, being asked how to save a cher
ry tree whose trunk has rotted con
siderably, replied: "The proper treat
ment for the cavity of your cherry
tree Is to clean It out, removing the
decayed wood; then wash or spray
the interior with an antiseptic, such
as a two per cent, solution of forma
lin, or a very dilute solution of mer
cury bichloride, which is corrosive
sublime; then paint it with ordinary
paint of any kind and finally fill the
cavity with any kind of cement, or use
one part of Portland cement with
about four or flvo parts of sand.
"This is practically nothing else
than the principle of modern dentis
try applied to the preservation of the
tree. The dentist cleans out the cavi
ty of a decaying tooth, applies an an
tiseptic to prevent further decay, and
fills the tooth with some substance,
that by preservation will prevent the
possibility of further decay. We are
coming to see that the treatment of
all living things for Ills and affiictlons
Is based upon the same fundamental
biological principle."
LATE BEARING OF APPLES.
Complnint is sometimes heard that
apple orchards eight or ten years old
do not bear any fruit. The fact of
the matter is, the trees are not old
enough. Trees can be stunted and
dwarfed into bearing crops before this
age, but trees ten years old, if well
cultivated and fed, should be busy
making heavy wood growth, and
much wood growth and fruiting do
not go together. Many varieties do
not begin to bear much until twelve
years old. Such trees can be forced
into earlier bearing by stopping cul
tivation and seeding down to grass,
but It Is usually considered better to
keep cultivating and feeding until the
tree naturally gets ready to bear,
when It will be so much larger and Its
capacity so much greater that the size
of the crops will more than compen
sate for the wait. Such trees, too,
will be longer lived than trees which

early bearing. Orchards should be
shallow cultivated up to the middle
of summer each year and by the time
they are twelve years old the trees
will want all the ground. Farmers'

CELERY ON THREE ACRES PAYS.
"Celery growing is not for a lazy
person, man or woman, but It pays."
The speaker was Miss Helen L. Bai
ley, and she was telling the reporter
about her success In raising celery
and shipping it to the New York City
market.
"My home is twenty miles up the
State and convenient to the railroad.
All told I have less than three acres
I of land, and when I started In to earn
my living there was a mortgage on
I the place and less than $100 In my
' pocket. While I raise other salable
vegetables which I sell to the people
around me, celery Is my principal
crop. Celery has paid the mortgage
on my home, has put money in the
bank for me and has enabled me to
educate a nephew and a niece. My
average crop of celery is 60,000 heads
and the average price is forty cents a
dozen. For extra large heads I re
ceive sixty cents a dozen. There Isn't
a month in the year when celery is
not in demand In New York City, so
there can be no doubht about getting
good prices provided the celery is up
to the mark.
"To raise celery to be marketed In
June my work begins in January.
The first step is to get good celery
seed, and sow it in boxes in a green-
i house. Under normal conditions it
I will require three weeks for celery
I seed to come up, though there have
been occasions when I nave forced
them up within eight days and the re
sult was in every way satisfactory.
As soon as the two little leaves ap
pear on the plants the process of
"pricking" begins and drags through
February and March.
"As regards tha greenhouse I
would advise a plenty of moisture and
air, but not too much heat. At what
ever temperature you begin always
be careful to keep it from the time
the seeds go in the ground until the
plants are taken out to be set in the
fields. . When I have had occasion to
force my seeds I have carried the
forcing process straight on until the
plants were ready to set out. While
this takes less time, and on the oc
casions when I have done it results
have proved satisfactory. New York

Where Divorce Is Easy.
Though one marriage out of three
In Japan ends in a divorce, the lower
class is, to an overwhelming degree,
responsible for this state of affairs. In

Toot Hardening by Gas.
The use of the gas furnace for forg

Telephones in Mines.
Although the use of telephones in
mines la not of recent origin, the ad

Face of Typical New Yorker.
London is a friendless city enough,
Heaven knows to those who are not
able to conquer but she seems to me
mild, benignant even, in comparison
with New York. The face of the Lon
doner Is very often overcast with the
thought of how to get a living in the
keen competition of the people in that
mighty capital; but the London face
is tranquility embodied in comparison
with the face of the typical New

see everywhere around you. And
this keenness of face is accompanied
by a terrible spirit of self-absorption.
