Mrs. Carrie Nation will Deliver Two Ad
dresses in Reynoldsville. '
Mrs. Carrie Nation, who has become
famous as a temperance advocate, not
because she is a great orator but on ac
count of using her hatchet so freely in
.smashing mirrors and other breakable
property, will deliver two addresses in
Reynoldsville this week. On Thursday
evening, June 4, she will speak In Park
Theatre, and Friday afternoon at two
o'clock in the Park Theatre. The ad
mission to these meetings Is free and
everybody Invited to attend. There Is
no doubt but that Mrs. Nation will get
a large audience to-morrow evening.
Miss Clara Smouse, of Pittsburg,
and Mrs. P. J.'ICasey and son, James,
of Falls Cteek, were the guests of
Mrs. J.S. McDonald over Sunday.
On Monday of next week, June 8,
will take place the county treasurer's
sale of seated and unseated lands for
unpaid taxes. The sale will take place
at the courthouse In Brookville at 10.00
a. m.
Ernest J. Benson, of Curwensyille,
who was operated on . In Clearfield
hospital about three weeks ago for
appendicitis, Is visiting his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. John Benson, in West
Reynoldsville.
Fred Williams, of Sligo, son of G.
P. Williams, an engineer on the Sligo
branch of the P. R. R., formerly of
West Reynoldsville, is now the regular
baggagemaster at the P. R. R. station
at this place.
One of Lawyer McDonBld's boys nar
rowly escaped being drowned, in Hoff
man's dam one day last week. The lad
had gone in beyond bis depth and was
going down the third time when he was
rescued. He was limp when taken out
of the water.
A. W. Mulhollan, of Rathmel, one
of the supervisors of Winslow town
ship, went to Lawton, W. Va., the
latter part of last week to bring his
wife home, who is ill. Mrs. Mulhollan
went to Lawton to visit two brothers
and took III while there.
Robert E. Lucas, father of our towns
man, Will E. Lucas, died at his home
in Brookville on Thursday, May 28,
1908, aged 72 years. Interment was
made In the Brookvile cemeteryon the
afternoon of Decoration Day. Mr. and
Mrs. Will E. Lucas attended the funeral
Mention was made in The Star last
week that Joseph McKernan bad been
called to Ogdensburg, N. Y., on ac
count of illness of his daughter, Miss
Susie McKernan, who has typhoid
fever. Miss Susie was not able totoe
brought borne. She Is in a hospital at
Ogdensburg.
By an oversight we neglected to
mention last week that our contempor
ary, the Volunteer, bad changed its
form from a four page eight column
paper to an eight page six column
paper. We consider the change a
decided improvement in the appear
ance of the paper.
The annual meetings of the Woman's
Home and Foreign Missionary Societies
of Clarion Presbytery will be held In
the DuBois Presbyterian church on
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of
this week. A number of Presbyterian
ladles of this place will attend some
of the sessions of the convention.
The DuBois Sub-District Epworth
League convention was held in the
M,E. church at Sykesville on Monday
and Tuesday of this week. Forrest
Ressler and Miss Ltllie Northey rere
delegates from the Reynoldsville Chap
ter. A number of Leaguers from this
place attended the night sessions.
An old criminal was once asked what

Mr. and Mrs. Albert Swanson, of
Efirl, Pa., came to Reynoldsville over
five weeks ago to visit Mr. and Mrs.
John Zimmerman and were only here a
day or two until one of their children
took diptheria and tbey were quaran
tined thirty days. Mr. and Mrs. Swan
son and children returned home Mon
day. Tbe nineteenth anniversary of Moun
tain Cliff Castle, Knights of Golden
Eagle, of Reynoldsville, was celebrated
in tbe Knights of Pythias ball last
night with a banquet and entertain
ment. There was a large attendance
and It was an enjoyable celebration.
Rev. J. C. McEntire, of Reynolds
ville, gave an interesting address.
There were songs and recitations on
tbe program also. The luncheon
served was a good one.
Common school diplomas have been
sent to all those who passed tbe exami
nation this spring, and who left envel
opes with tbe committee. Those who
did not leave envelopes or for any other
reason have not received their diplo
mas, also any who bave at any previdus
examination been granted a diploma
and bave not yet received it, please call

Jumped on Broken Bottle.
Bruce Emerlck, seven-year-old son
of Bert Emerlck, of Emerickvllle, cut
bis right foot badly Monday evening
by jumping on a broken bottle. The
internal plantar artery was severed.
Bruce was on a fence and jumped off
Into the grass and did not see tbe
broken bottle.
Game This Afternoon.
Tbe game of baseball, between the
Reynoldsville and Helvetia Inter-County
League clubs, tbat was to bave been
played yesterday afternoon was post
poned until this afternoon. Game will
be called at 3.30. Tbe Helvetia team
defeated the Reynoldsville team at Hel
vetia last Friday 6 to 4 and a good game
can be expected to-day.
Establishes a Record.
Sheriff Grant Scheafnocker is
among those who are willing to be
lieve that there is somewhat of a
panic on band at present writing.
Since Saturday he has had in the
county jail but one solitary prisoner,

the number in the Jefferson county
jail to reach this diminutive figure,
and while it cuts down the Sheriff's
boarding bill the county is to be con
gratulated upon tbe Improved moral

Will Ask Pardon.
An effort is being made to secure , a
pardon for Carmine Pascuzzl, who was
convicted of second degree murder in
the Court of Oyer and Terminer of Jef
ferson counly at the August session,
1904, and sentenced to 'fifteen years Im
prisonment in the WeBtern Peniten
tiary. Another man was arreBted in
Italy after the trial of Pascuzzl and was
tried for the same crime, the Italian
court holding that It had jurisdiction
over its alien subjects, and evidence
adduced upon that trial and confessions
of the prisoner then tried, are said to
prove conclusively tbat be Is the man
who committed the crime for which
Pascuzzl Is suffering. Brookville Re

The Epworth League banquet and
reunion held in tbe festal hall of the
Methodist Episcopal church last Friday
evening was attended , by almost one
hundred members of the League and
was a very enjoyable social event. Rev.
H. H. Barr, of DuBois, president of
Clarion District Epworth League, was
toastynaster and he filled the position
very nicely. The following toasts were
given: "Nineteenth Birthday," Dr. J.
A. Parsons; "The Unfaithful Member,"
Harvey S. Ddter; "The Officers," Miss
Cora Mllliren; "Look Up, Lift Up,"
Mies LiUle Northey; "The Ladies,"
George White. Address by Robert P,
Koehler, president of the League. This
was such a pleasant affair that it is
likely the League will hold a banquet
annually hereafter.
