The Methodist Episcopal Sunday school will hold a picnic at Romantlo Park, Sykesville, on Thursday of next week, August 15. Rev. H. H. Barr, pastor of the Zlon M. E. church in DuBois, preached in the M. E. church at this place last Sun day morning and evening. The Tltusvllle Express on the P.R. R. was wrecked near Klttannlng yester day forenoon and six persons were killed and a number injured. The monthly meeting of the Winslow township supervisors was held at Frank's Tavern Saturday. A special meeting will be, held next Friday. The Baptist congregation at New Bethlehem is without a pastor. Rev. Chapman, who was pastor about two years, has accepted a call to a charge near Atlantic City. Mrs. Goorge Hartman, who died a couple of months ago, carried 1500.00 in . surance in the Protected Home Circle. Mr. Hartman received a check last week for the amount of the insurance. Albert Almo, of Sykesville, was taken to the county jail Saturday morning by Constable Perry B. Love. Almo was charged with threatening to kill a man ' at Sykesville. The Woman's Relelf Corps will hold a picnio at the Sons of Veterans en campment on Friday of this week. Members from a number of Corps are expected to be present. The names of all persons who have given money for Old Home Week fund since the list of contributors was pub lished lust week will be published next week. McCurdy, Past State Command er, of Wilklnsburg, who has attended the Sons of Veterans encampment every year since they began holding encampments, died the first of last May. He will be missed very much by th boys this year. The interior of the Stoke & Felcht Drug Company store has been beauti fully and artistically decorated for Old Home Week. The work was done by Irvln R. Klock and H. Alex Stoke. The decorations give the store a neat and attractive appearance. Mr. Thornton was a resident of Reyn oldsville a couple of years Charles M, Snyder, a bright young man of Punxsutawney, who taught school several terms In Jefferson county, was in Reynoldsville last Thurfday and called at The Star office. Mr. Snyder will likely be a candidate next year for the Republican nomination for Assem bly. Wednesday evening of last week Miss Kittle Mowery gave a party at her home In West Roynoldsville in honor of her cousin, MIbs Gwendolen Stormer, of Oil City, who Is visiting Miss Kittle. Ten maidens were present and had a very pleasant time. Luncheon was served. Minks killed forty-five of Benjamin Haugh's spring chickens the past ten days. They were fine chickens weigh ing from two and a half to three pounds. Mr. Haugh caught two of the chicken killers and brought them to 'Squire Neff's office Monday and got the bounty of 11.00 apiece for them. The new brick high school building in Washington township will be com pleted in time for the coming torm of school. We understand it is a very model school building with approved methods of heating and ventilating. The new building has been erected on the site ot the old high school building. Prof. C. J. Scott and wife packed their household goods last week and shipped same to Unlontown, where Prof, will superintend the public schools the coming term. Prof, and Mrs. Scott left here Saturday afternoon for borne of her parents at Wellsville, Ohio, where Mrs. Scott will remain a few weeks. Joseph B. Mitchell, pharmacist, one of our town boys who has been employed in a drug store at Houtzdale several years, has moved to Reynoldsville and will work in McEntire's drug store for his brother-in-law, Harry L. McEntire. Mr. Mitchell and his estimable wife have many friends here who are glad to have them become citizens of our town again, Raffae'.e Grieco, who conducted a bar bershop In room next to Reynolds opera house, sold his shop to Carmine Marl naro, left here Saturday with his family for New York City and to-day sails for Italy. He will be absent about six months. Carmine Sckepplnl, who con ducted a barbershop in West Reynolds ville and sold It, now has charge of the opera bouse barbershop. - Dr. J. J. Moore and wife left here Saturday to spend several week in Philadelphia and Wilmington, Del. Dr. Moore, who had charge of the Pan ther Run Coal Co. work almost a year, giving up the work the first of this month, may possibly return to Reyn oldsville and locate here. During his short stay in our town Dr. Moore has made many warm friends who would be pleased to have him locate in Reynoldsville. Married in Indiana. Merrill W. Dunwoody, of Punxsutaw ney, and Miss Annie MhHo Brewer, of Reynoldsville, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Brewer, were united in mar lage at Indiana, Pa., July 2iith, by Rev. H. F. King. Surprise Party. A surprise party was given at home of Joseph S. Johnston, near Prescott vllle, laBt evening in honor of Miss Iva Walk, who has , boen an invalid for some months. A number of Reynolds ville people attended the party. Died Suddenly. S. P. Evans, at one time a clerk In the Jefferson Supply Co. store at Royn oldsville, died suddenly at Monongahe la City Monday night. He retired in usual good health and died before morn ing. He was a member of the B. P. O. Elk lodge of Reynoldsville. Pifer-Keller Wedding. Miss Anna E. Keller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Lodge Rooms Open Old Home Week. Mazomanla Tribe No. 341, Improved Order of Red Men, has decided to keep their lodge rooms open every day during Old Home Week excepting Monday of that week. Some one will have charge of the rooms and visitors will be given a cordial welcome. The rooms are lo cated on the third floor of the Smith k McClure block. The rooms are very cozy and supplied with city water. Church Election. Wednesday of next week, August 14, an election will be held in the Method ist Episcopal church in this place to elect a delegate to attend the lay con ference to be held In Erie, Pa., the first week in September. The election board will have the pulls open In the afternoon and evening of August 14. All members of the church male and female over twenty-one years of age are entitled to vote. No candidates been announced yet. Golden Wedding. About three hundred people attended the golden wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Archie McCullough at Grove Summit on Wednesday of last week. Among the handsome and valuable presents given on this occasion was a gold watch to Mr. McCullough and a crescent shape brooch set with diamonds and poarls, to Mrs. MuCullough. Our townsman, Mr. Nlnlan Cooper, was present and read an original poem. Annual Picnic at Baum't. The annual picnic of farmers and friends will be held in the Peter Baum grove on Wednesday, August 28. Hon. Peter Gearhart, a member of the legis lature, and other speakers will be pres ent and deliver addresses. Everybody cordially Invited to attend this picnic and enjoy a day's outing. The picnio will be under the auspices ot the Jeffer son County Pomona Grange. The grove is' located two miles from Fuller Station, four miles from Reynoldsville and six miles from Brookvllle. Taken to Jail Friday. A fellow giving his name as P. E. Martin and Scranton as his home town, dropped into Reynoldsville Friday with the crowd P. O. S. of A. day and Im mediately began to work the change racket in stores and markets. His play was to buy something to amount of ten or fifteen cents, give the clerk a ten dollar bill, get his change and then discover he bad the change, shove back five dollars of the change, get a five dollar bill for it, then lay down the five and ask the cleric for the ten dollar bill and if the clerk didn't catch on the fel low would beat bim out of five dollars. Martin always selected a store where everybody was real busy, so the clerk would be in a hurry, for his scheme bad to be worked hurriedly to confuse the one giving the change. Martin tried hlj scheme a number of places and was unsuccessful, but finally caught one of our business men and he was srvwcaugbt by Chief-of-Police Adelsperger. An In formation was mad6 against him before 'Squire E. Neff, he was bound over 'to court, and being unable to give ball was taken to the county jail Saturday morn ing by Constable Perry B. Love. KILLED BY FLY WHEEL. Daniel M. Bowlby Met Sudden Death at the Tannery Saturday. Daniel M. Bowlby, an old employe at the Elk Tanning Co. plant In West Reynoldsville, was instantly killed by fly wheel of the engine in the leech house about eight o'clock Saturday morning, August 3rd, 1907. He was alone when naught in fly wheel and it is supposed he was killed a half-hour before his lifeless body was found in a heap on the engine room floor. He had boen missed from his work at least a half hour before there was anything known of the horrible accident. There are two guard rails In front of the fly wheel and how he was caught in the wheel will never be known positively. Mr. Bowlby was liquor runner in the leech house and it was also part of his work to oil the leech bouse engine, and he may have been working around the en gine when be fell Into the fly wheel. Funeral service was held at late home of deceased In West Reynoldsville at 2 00 p. m. Monday, conducted by Rev. J. C. McEntire, and Interment was made In the Reynoldsville cemetery. Daniel Bowlby was born at Strouds urg. Monroe Co., Pa., forty-five years airo. He cmu to Reynoldsville In May, 1883, over twenty four years ago, and began working at the tannery. About fourteen years ago was married to An nie Barry, whorri, with throe children, survive deceased. Mr. Bowlby was an Industrious and hard working man, In fact he stuck so close to bis work that it Impaired his health to some extent. He had just returned last week from a two weeks' vacation spent at Strouds burg for benefit of his health and had gone to work Thursday morning. Mr. Bowlby was a meinberof the Pro tected Home Circle and carried $1,000 life Insurance in that order. His widow will get the Insurance. S. OF V. ENCAMPMENT. Camps Assembled in Mammoth Park Yesterday Program for Week. The fourteenth annual field encamp ment of the Sons of Veterans Is being held In Mammoth Park this week. The Camps assembled yesterday in the park and pitched their tents. There was a large crowd at the park last night and everybody seemed to be hav ing a good time. Lawyer Clement W. Jewell will spend next week as guest of his cousin, Dr. A. J. Meek, in Reynoldsville. Punxsutawney and DuBois base ball teams are now out of the Inter-state league. A DuBois newspaper claims that the DuBois team was "frozen out of the league at Bradford." Sykesville Camp Won Prize for Best Ap pearance in Parade and Emeiickville for Largest Number in Line. The fourteenth annual reunion of the Northwestern Reunion Association of P. O. S. of A. held in Reynoldsville last Friday was attended by a large number of Patriotic Sons) but not as many as would have been here had not the weather been so unfavorable In the morning. The rain in early morning no doubt kept many at home, yet it turned out to be a pleasant day for such a gathering, and those who did attend apparently bad a vory pleasant and do- llghtful time. The town was nicely decorated and the visitors were given a cordial welcome. The program of the reunion began with a convenion of the delegates in the P. O. S. of A. hall at eight o'clock Thursday evening, at which time the Association officers for ensuing year were elected and the place for holding the reunion in 1908 was selected, which will be at Ramey, Clearfield county. Rev. C. E. Redokor, Past State Presi dent of Maryland, was present and de livered a very interesting address. After the meeting a luncheon was served in the lodge room. Norman Butler, proprietor of the Imperial ros-. tau rant, was caterer. Early Friday morning Camps bogan coming into town and by noon a number of Camps were well represented. The first thing on the program was a game of ball at 9.30 a. m. between tho DuBois and Reynoldsville Camps. The home team defeated the visitors by score of 5 to 10. It was an interesting game. Both teams did good playing. Tho parade at 1.30 p. m. was one of the leading features of the day's pro gram. It was a fine parade. There were six bra's bands, one drum corps and a number of Camps in the parade. Jos. M. Cathers was chief marshal and Cbas. P. Dickey assistant. The judges, Dr. J. W. Foust, Wm. Copping and C. A. Stephenson, award ed the prizes to following Camps: Haying largest per cent of member! n parade, Hazen Camp; prize $15.00. Making best appearance In parade, Sykesville Camp; prize $15.00. Largest number of members in pa rade, Emerlckville; prize $10.00. Coming greatest distance, Ramey; prize $10 00. The judges in band contest, Richard Ramsey and J. A. Blaydon, awarded the $20 00 prize to Volunteer band of Du Bois. After the parade a publlo meeting was held In Park Thefatre presided over by Frank R. Best, who Introduced the speakers. Rev. J. C. McEntire made opening prayer. W. I. Swope, Esq., of Clearfield, Past State President, was the first speaker. He is a good talker and his address was Interesting. Rev. C. E. Rcdeker, Past State Pres ident of Maryland, followed Lawyer Swope: His subject was, "Pilots of the Republic," Rev. Redeker Is an able and elciquen. speaker, and his address was very interesting and instructive. There was a game of bail at 3.30 be tween Curwensvllle and Reynoldsville teams. It was the best game played on the Reynoldsville grounds this season. Both teams played fast ball and there were very few errors. The score was 2 to 3 in favor of the Reynoldsville team. At 7.00 p. m. there was a band con test in Frank's Park. At 8.00 p. m. a dance In the I. O. O. F. hall. About midnight the special train for Clearfield and intermediate points left here over the B , R. & P. R'y with a tired, yet jolly crowd of people who were well pleased with the fourteenth annual reunion of the Northwestern Re union Association. Notice to Contractors.
