, A bill which provides that the chief
burgess of any borough in this common
wealth will have the power to appoint,
suspend or discharge all policemen em
ployed by the borough, passed the
house of representatives a few days
ago, which, if it becomes a lw; will
settle a question that has bothered
many boroughs for sometime. The law
on the management of policemen In
boroughs has never been olearly defined
heretofore.
A hill has passed the state senate and
is now before the house which is being
strenuously opposed by hunters, wno
claim that it would practically kill
pheasant hunting in this statu. If the
bill is passed by the house and signed
by the governor it will change the
time when pheasants can be killed from
the present time of October 15 to
December 1, to Nov. flj to December
1. Making the season only fifteen days'
duration, and that right in the middle
of the deer season when it is unlawful
for a hunter to use dogs.
We have several times stated In The
Star that newspapers are forbidden by
postal regulations to publish anything
relative to the outcome of a lottery,
raffle or other "game of chance," or
to advertise the same. We make this
statement again for the benefit of some
of our readers who evidently did not
see our previous notices and have no
knowledge of this law or they would
not send In items for publication re
garding such affairs, Some of our
exchanges are either ignorant of such
postal regulations or they wilfully
throw themselves liable. , The law pro
vides for a heavy fin'-iud imprison
ment for those who violate, it. So
please bear this in mind and don't
requent the publication of a notice
giving names of persons vbo win a
prize in a game of ohance.
A man in Greene county, Pa., was
incarcerated in a madman's cell a few
days ago who lost his mental balance
by excessive reading of five and ten
cent novels of the thrilling kind. In
f his room was found hundreds of novels;
he had been persistently reading the
trashy things and became a maniac.
It is Baid that when the officers placed
him in custody he called out to his
dime novel heroes to come and protect
him, but they failed to materialize.
'There are a large number of young
people in Reynoldsville who are spend
ing too much of their time reading such
trashy literature and it will not be
surprising if some of them become in
sane as a result of reading such liter
ature. Do you know the kind of read
ing your son or daughter are spending
their time on? See that they have
good reading, matter and that they
cultivate a desire to read good books.
' It is surprising bow polite and
thoughtful some men are about the
comfort and desire of other people,
"especially the ladies, until they want
to taae a smoke and then they don't
'teem to care picayune whether the
moke is offensive to other people or
not. They are so selfish that they
must satisfy their desire for a smoke
regardless of other peoples pleasure.
Not long sli.ee the editor of this paper
was riding on a trolley car on which
were a number of ladles. A profession
al man from a town not far from Reyn
oldsville was on the trolley and sat
behind two ladles. He light a cigar
and began smoking and the smoke blew
over the ladles' shoulders, but he was
: unmindful of the fact that the smoke
' annoyed the ladles, and when the con
ductor requested blm politely to stop
moking the professional fellow took it
' as an offense, and was not in a good
humor about it.
The jury in the Harry Thaw murder
case at New York City, which attracted
almost world-wide attention, after be
ing out two days could not agree on a
Verdict and Friday was discharged.
The jury stood seven for first degree
murder and five for acquittal. This
will mean another trial for Thaw, if it
will be possible to find twelve men in
New York State wbe will be eligible to
be jurors. It has been a long drawn
out, notorious and disgraceful trial.
During its progress testimony which
' had no possible bearing on the case was
admitted, counsel quarrelled about noth
ing, animosities were engendered and
displayed in open court, and disputes
about teobnloal points of evidence,
which in the very nature of things
could not Influence the jury a particle,
consumed much time. For weeks the
trial bad cot been of much interest to
' anybody but lawyers, for its profession
al value outranked Its news value. The
disagreement of the jury was quite a
shock to Harry, as be .fully expected to
be acquitted and given his liberty. '

The Reynoldsville' High School lost
the second and last game of the series
to the Athletics. The game was slow
and In some places a trifle rough, al
though the H. S. played a very olean
game. Leonard Harris, '0(1, starred for
the High School, while MoEntlre and
Thornton played the game for the Ath
letics. Prof. C. J. Scott refereed and
there were not any of his decisions questioned.
