Onion Eaters Good Humored.
"If people would eat more onions,"
said the man with the smothered
beefsteak, "the world might have to
hold its nose, but tha population of
St. Louis would be a great deal
healthier.
"Most of us ent too much meat and
grease and bread and butter and not
enough vegetables, and the conse
quence is our systems get clogged up
with grease and starch, our livers
get out of order, and we grumble at
our wives and scold our children and
fuss when the baby cries and quarrel
with the street car conductors, and
get into rows at the office and lose
our Jobs, not because we are natural
ly sulky or quarrelsome, but because
we ore bilious. Why are we bili
ous? Because we don't eat onions.
You never saw a dyspeptic man eat
ing onions. He thinks they are poi
son, but, in fact, they are the medi
cine he most needs.
"Whenever you see an onion eater
you see a whole-souled, open-hearted,
jolly pood fellow, who knows what
he ought to eat to keep him good-humored.
Talk about the staff of life,
why bread is only a crutch. There
Is more nourishment in an onion
than there is in a roll. The onion
lovers keep the world moving, to say
nothing of providing It with much of
its fun." St. Louis Globe-Democrat.
Tunnel Delimitation.
Delimitation in a tunnel is probab
ly one of the novelties of international
law. It has just been carried out be
tween Italy and Switzerland in the
Simplon. There have been several
incipient disputes ns to the precise
point at which one Jurisdiction ended
and the other began, and to place such
incidents out of the range of possibili
ty for the future, a mixed commission
was appointed to draw a boundary line
in the bowels of the mountain. Their
work has Just been successfully com
pleted. It is noted as a curious de
tail that the temperature in the tun
nel during the work was about 62 de
gress Fahrenheit. Philadelphia Record.

FIFTEEN YEARS OF ECZEMA.
Terrible Itching Prevented Sleep
Hands, Arms, and Legs Affected
Cured in 0 Days by Cuticura.
"I had eczema nearly fifteen years. The
affected parts were tny hands, arms and
legs. They were the worst in the winter
time and were always lteby, and I could
Dot keep from scratching them. I had to
keep both hands bandaged all the time,
and at night I would have to scratch
through the banda? as the itching was
so severe, and at times I would have to
tear everything nff my hands to scratch
the skin. I could not rest or sleep. I had
several physicians treat me, but they could
not c n permanent cure, nor even
could they stop the itching. After using
the Cuticura Soap, one box Cuticura Oint
ment and two bottles Cuticura Resolvent
for about six days the itching had ceased,
and now the sores 'have disappeared, and
I never felt better in my life than I do
now. Edwaru Worell, Band SOtli, U. S.

New York City. The waist that
ean be worn over a separate yoke is
always a dainty and attractive one,
and Just now is among the very latest
developments of fashion. This one
is adapted to silk, to wool and to
washable materials and can be util
ized for a great many occasions, as
the cuffs are adjustable, so that the
sleeves can be longer or shorter at
will. In the illustration it Is made
of veiling with trimming of velvet
or one and three-fourth yards forty
four inches wide, one-half yard of all
over lace for the chemisette, one and
three-fourth yards of applique, one
yard of all-over lace if long sleeves
are used.
Nino Gored Tucked Skirt.
Tucked skirts are always pretty,
always graceful, always attractive in
light weight materials and just now,
when everything fashionable answers
to that description, they are adapted
to almost all seasonable materials.
Here is one that is treated after a
quite novel fashion and that is
abundnntly full below the stltchings,
while It Is flat over the hips. In il
lustration it is made of one of the
lovely pongee silks in the beautiful
sapphire blue and is trimmed with
Bilk braid, but it will be found ad
mirable for the very lovely cotton and
silk and cotton materials as well as
for those of wool and of silk. As it
can be made In either round or walk
ing length, it is adapted both to the
street and to house wear, and conse
quently to the slightly heavier as
well as the extremely thin materials.
The skirt is made in nine gores and
there is a group of three tucks at
each seam which effectually conceal
it. The fulness at the back is laid
in inverted pleats and the tucks are
stitched flat for graduated lengths.
The quantity of material required
for the medium size Is eleven and
one-half yards twenty-seven, Ave and
overlaid with appllqtie and the chemi
sette of laee over chiffon. The chem
isette, however, is entirely separate,
and consequently several can be made
tor wear with one waist. All lingerie
materials are as well liked as is lace.
The trimming also can be almost any
thing that may be liked. . A very
pretty effect is obtained by making
the shaped bands of silk and either
embroidery or braiding them in some
simple design, but applique or band
ing of any sort can be used.
The waist consists of the front and
the backs, which are tucked to yoke
depth and joined to the band. The
chemisette is separate and Is ad
justed under it and the two are
closed invisibly at the back. The
sleeves are comfortably full, tucked
at their lower edges and joined to
the bands. The cuffs are entirely
separate and are finished with hems
at their upper edges, in which elastic
is Inserted so that they can be slipped
on and off at will.
The quantity of material required
for the medium size is three-and
seven-eighth yards twenty-one, two
and seven-eighth yards twenty-seven
three-fourth yards forty-four or flvt
and one-half yards fifty-two lncha
wide when material has figure o)
nap; nine and one-half yards twenty
seven, five and one-fourth yards for
ty-four or four and three-fourth yard!
fifty-two inches wide when it has not,
with twelve yards of braid to trim
as illustrated.
A fresh fallacy is often more pleat
ing than a twice-told truth.

White Velvet Adds Beauty.
Trimmings of white velvet em
broidered in gold heighten the beauty
of gowns in the new shade of hello
trope that has a pinkish tinge.
Buttonholes In Collars.
Some new collars have little but
tonholes worked in tho turndown par
and link collar buttons are passed
through this, holding the collar li
place without pins. A stud matchlnj
the link buttons goes with the set.
Sleeves of Different Fabric.
An oddity of some evening gown
is that the short puff sleeves are a
different fabric from the rest of thi
gown.
PE-RU-NA A MEDICAL COMPOUND
In nny medical compound as much depends upon the manner in which
It is compounded as upon the ingredients used.
First, there must bo a duo proportion of the ingredients. "Kuril drug
In tho pharmacopeia lias its spcclul action. To combine nny drug with other
drugs that have slightly different Action, the combination must be ninds
with strict reference to the use for which the compound is intended. The
drugs nmy bo well selected as to their efficacy, but the compound KXTIKE
LY 6101 LEI) BY THE PHOPOUTION In which they are combined.
It takes years and years of experience to discover this proportion. There
Is no low of chemistry, of pharmacy, by which tho exact bnlance of propor
tlon can be determined. EXPERIENCE IS THE ONLY GUIDE!.
In compounding a catarrh remedy Dr. Hartman has had many years
experience. In the use of the various Ingredients which composed the cs
tarrh remedy, Pcruna, ho has learned, little hy little, how to harmonise the
action of each ingredient, how to combine them into a stable compound, how
to arrange them into such nice proportions as to blend the taste, the opera
ntlon and the chemical peculiarities of each several ingredient in order to
produce a pharmaceutical product beyond tho criticism of doctors, pharma
cists or chemists.
WE REPE1T, THAT AS MUCH DEPENDS ON THE WAY IN WHICH
THE DKUGS AUG COMBINED AS DEPENDS UPON THE DltUGS THEM
SELVES. Tho compound must present a stability which is not affected by changes
of temperature, not affected by exposure to the air, not affected by age. It
must be so combined that It will remain just the snme whether used in the
logging or mining camps of tiie northwest or tho coffee plantations of the
tropics.
A complete list of the Ingredients of Peruna would not enable any drug
gist or physician to reproduce Peruna. It is the skill and nugnrity by which
these Ingredients are brought together that give Peruna much of its pecu
liar claims as an efficacious catarrh remedy.
However much virtue each ingredient of Pcrunn may possess, the value
of tho compound depends Inrgely upon the innnner and proportion in which
they ore combined. The right ingredients, put together rightly, is the only
way a medical compound can be iiiado of real value.
