A party, of which about 75 were hunters, went on a deer hunt, through the mountains, being out eight days. The 75 hunters killed 800 deer, an average of 100 a day, or more than one deer a man a day. There ha been some criticism on the part of many about this wholesale slaughter of deer, and It Is urged that a game law Bhould be passed In this country like those In other) countries which expressly pro hibit! the wholesale elaughter of garni. NEVER TIRES Of the Food That Restored Her to Health. if "My food was killing me and I didn't know the cause," writes a Colo, young lady: "For two years I was thin and sickly, suffering from indi gestion and inflammatory rheuma tism. "I had tried different kinds of diet, plain living and many of the reme dies recommended, but got no better. "Finally, about five weeks ago, mother suggested that I try Grape Nuts, and I began at once, eating it with a little cream or milk. A Change for the better began at once. "To-day I am well and am gaining weight and strength all the time. I've gained 10 lbs. in the last five weeks, and do not suffer any more from indigestion and the rheumatism Is all gone. "I know It is to Grape-Nuts alone that I owe my restored health. I still eat the food twice a day and never tire of it." Name given by Postum Co., Battle Creek, Mich. The flavor of Grape-Nuts is pecu liar to itself. It is neutral, not too sweet and has an agreeable, healthful quality that never grows tiresome. One of the sources of rheumatism Is from overloading the system with acid material, the result of imperfect digestion nnd assimilation. As soon as improper food is aban doned and Grape-Nuts Is taken regu larly, digestion is made strong, the organs do their work of building up good red blood cells and of carrying away the excess of disease-making material from the system. The result is a certain and steady return to normal health and mental activity. "There's a reason." Rend the little book, "The Road to Well Ule," In pkgs. 1 THE NEWEST HOUSEWIFE. CLEANING HAIR BRUSHES. Valuable brushes, such as those with ivory or tortoiseshell backB, may be thoroughly cleansed by using brau instead of soap and water. The brush Is dipped into bran, which must be rubbed Into the bristles as one would soap, and the particles may afterward foe removed by tapping the brush bristles downward on the table. The .process la somewhat lengthy, but it prevents the bristles from becoming softened, as they Inevitably must bo if wotted. When every trace of. bran ha3 been removed, the brush will be found to be perfectly clean, and may then be wiped with a soft silk hand kerchief. MEANING OF DOMESTIC ECON OMY. Did you ever ask .yourself the mean ing of the term domestic economy? Most likely you never did. Notwith standing the growing popularity of this branch of study, there is no sub ject the name and nature of which is eo generally misunderstood. Some young women think It means "cookery and laundry lessons;" oth ers think "scrapping and saving" would more fitly define it, while dim ideas of go-called mental duties and domestic drudgery float through the brains of others. But these are "small nlbbllngs at the outer bark" of the truth, which Is that domestic economy is a saving knowledge, a knowledge which relates to the intelligent and cutllvated man agement of everything connected with the home. It is the science of the home, and pre-eminently a woman's science. It is the woman's .work to make the house into a home. Every woman ought to know how to do all things necessary to make a home happy, says Woman's Life. The husband earns the money, but the principal part of it has to be spent by the wife. Hence it is very Im portant that all girls should learn do mestic economy. But please remem ber that domestic economy is one of those things that cannot be learned from books aolne. WINTER SALADS HOUSE. Last fall I felt that in order to be perfectly happy in my garden I must find a place for a cold house or pit. The house Is a lean to 66 feet long, and six feet wide. The terrace wall, which is elx feet high; was used as the back or high wall of the houso. The upper ends of the sashes rested on the top of the wall which was built up two inches with cement grooves to fit the sashes. The lower ends of the sashes rested in a groove made of cement on a brick wall, which was two feet high. To cover this house I used 22 3 by 6 feet sashes. Six of the sashes were cut and hinged, bo they could be opened as needed for ventilation. The north end of the house was built up solid with brick, while a door was made in the south end. The walls are made or brick, washed down with cement. While I do not remember what the whole cost of the house was, I do know that all of the material used (excepting the sashes) was worth about $60. This house has no fire heat, but derives Its warmth from the sun. During the cold weather the sashes are covered at night with straw mats. Garden Magazine. EMBROIDERED PINCUSHION. A long, narrow pincushion that is designed to stand against the back of the bureau Is of white linen done in eyelet embroidery. The top Is really a linen doily that is larger than the pincushion itself, so that a border is formed which is finished In an irregu lar scallop done in buttonhole etiteh. Slits are cut and buttonholed in the top and ribbon is run thro-jgn them and tied in two stiff little bows at the top and bottom, directly in the center. The cover is made up over a colored silk lining the same shade as the ribbon, which gives an opportunity for carrying out the col or scheme of a bedroom. RECIPES Lemon Ice Cream. Squeeze a lem on and strain the Juice upon as much fine sugar as it will absorb, pour 3 q-aarts of cream into it very slowly, stirring fast all the time. Another simple but very good recipe is: Heat a quart of. milk hot, but do not let it boll. Add the yolks of 4 eggs, beaten with a coffee cup of sugar, and flavor with lemon or vanilla. Choco late cream can be made by adding some powdered chocolate and mix be fore freezing. Also peaches or straw berries can be used for a change. NEW YEAR PROMISES MUCH No Excessive Stocks Carried Over and Results of Inventories Equal Sanguine Anticipations. R. G. Dun & Co.'s "Review of Trade" Bays: "The New Year opens bright with promise In business circles no ex cessive stocks being carried over, and results of Inventories fully equal san guine anticipations. It is especially noticenble iu dispatches from the West that there was less than the customary lull In business during the holiday season, while bargain sales are rapidly disposing of the moderate supplies remaining on hand. ''In the leading Industries contracts on the books are very large and plants operate full time, except where ma terials or fuel cannot be secured or finished products cannot be forwarded to consumers. There Is much com plaint from the Northwestern flour mills on this point and export trade Is also restricted because grain and other merchandise fall to reach the seaboard promptly. This delay may be attributed part of the decrease of $1,749,(105 in exports from the port of New York for the last week as com pared with the movement a year ago, while Imports exceeded the very heavy total for the previous year by $1, 81,690. "Many new contracts for a large tonnage of Bteel appeared during the past year, notably structural mater ial for San. Francisco. Railway re quirements show no abatement, few contracts being considered, however, except for delivery in the last half of this year. "Prices of pig iron have risen close to the position of 1900, but finished products are still much lower as to standard figures. ''Meanwhile the railroads do not move the pig iron as desired and many mills are running on light Btocks. Tin plate mills have Bmall stocks and large orders, making prices strong, but tin was depressed by large statistics of visible supply. "Business in the primary market for textiles has been Interrupted by the holidays and inventories, but work Is progressing in preparation of new lines for the coming Beason. A few sales of sheetings have been made to China, the first export business from that quarter for a long time, and more orders could have been secured by the making of moderate conces sions. MARKETS. It consists of a waxllko composition, the size of the "grains" varying according to the calibres of the guns. For use In re volvers, rifles and sporting guns, the grains resemble the tiny perforated glass bends of the sort used In old time needlework. For the machine guns, the rapid-fire guns and the heavy rifles of battleships and forts, the grains are cylindrical In shape, vary ing in size from a third of an inch In diameter and half an Inch in length to three-fourths of an inch in dia meter and about two Inches in length each grain, in order to increase the area exposed to ignition, being per forated equl-dlstantly and longitudin ally with from one to six holes, big as knitting needles, depending upon the size of the grain. Which of those people are right? Is It more proper to call Peruna al i-nturrh remedy than to cull It a tonlcV Our reply Is, that Peruna is both a tonic and a catarrh remedy. Inf deed, there can be no effectual catarrh remedy that Is nut also a tonic. In order to thoroughly relieve any case of cntnrrli, a remedy must not only have a epecltic action on the mucous membranes affected by the ca turrh, but it must Imve a general tonic action on the nervous system. Cutnri li, even in persons who are otherwise strong, Is a weakened con clitlou of some mucous membrane. There must be tioinetlilng to strengthen the circulation, to give tone to the arteries, and to raise the vital forces. From a theoretical standpoint, therefore, Pcruna is beyond criticism. The use of Perunn confirms this opinion. It is estimated that the United King dom alone manages to consume 500, 000,000 matches a day, which comes out at about 12 for every man, wo man and child. Smokers probably account for the greater number, so that they will be Interested to know that about 90 tons of wood are used up in the form of matches every day, or about 30,000 tons n year. If one day's consumption of matches were placed end to end they would extend for a distance of about 15,000 miles.
