The Pocohontas Degree and Mazo mania Tribe No. 341, I. O. R. M., at tended services in the M. E. church at 11.00 a. m. last Sunday in a body. Dr. Parsons preached a good sermon to them. Chief-of Tolico Frank P. Adelsperger is having a two-story brick building erected on Main street, opposite the Burns House. There will be a store room and barber shop on first floor and dwelling rooms on second floor. John J. Myers, student in the Luthor an Theological Seminary at Chicago, who is doing Mission work in Syracuse, N. Y., during the summer vacation, visited his parents, Rev. and Mrs. J. W. Myers, in this place during, the past week. G. W. Lenkerd and bride arrived in Reynoldsville last Thursday evening from a wedding trip in Canada. They are stopping at Hotel Imperial until they get their house on Grant street ready for occupancy, which will be soon. The new dynamo at Frank's Tavern was operated three or four nights the past week, furnishing lights for the an nex. This week the Tavern is being wired for electricity and soon the en tire hotel will be lighted with elec tricity. The flower committee of Endeavor Society of Presbyterian church" will hold a dime Bocial on Thursday evening at home of L. L. Gourley, on Grant st. Light refreshments will be served and home mBde candies sold. A liberal pa tronage is deBired. Ladies of Presbyterian Foreign and Home Missionary Society will hold a market at the Keystone Hardware Co. store Saturday afternoon, June 9. There will be no soliciting done, and it is hoped the ladies will send in a generous Bupply of things for market. A base ball team from this place went to Pardus Friday afternoon and played the Pardus team. The score was 3-16 in favor of the Reynoldsville boys. Fred McEntire and Dick Reynolds was battery for Reynoldsville team, and Vivian, King and Lingenfolter did the "fancy work" for Pardus team. Over in Clearfield county all barrooms are closed on Decoration Day and last Wednesday forenoon, while the bars at this place were closed about an hour and a ha.f, some thirsty fellow from Judge Smith's bailiwick drove into town and finding the bars all closed, said : "Judge Smith must be running Jeffer son county too." It was reported here Sunday and since that from twenty-eight to forty non-union miners at Eleanora were poisoned Saturday by eating canned meat or in some other manner, but we were unable to find any person, by tele phone or personal interviews, who knew anything positive about the report, only that such a report had been circu lated. We don't know whether the report is true or a canard. At a meeting of the Board of Direct ors of the Jefferson County Agricultural Society and Driving Park Association, hold Monday afternoon, Syl. Truman was elected Secretary of the Society, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Frank B. Henderson, and Harvey D. Haugh, of Union township, and S. A. Love, of Brookvillo, were elected Directors, to fill the vacancies causod by the resignation of Syl. Truman and Scott McClelland. Brookville Repub lican. In a drunken brawl at Fuller Tuesday evening of last week one Polander struck another Polander with a pick and it was thought the injured man would not live, but he is recovering. Chief-of-Pollce Adelesperger was given a description of an Italian, whom it was claimed had struck the Polander with pick, and the chief arrested the Italian and locked him up, but the Italian was released the following morning when it was learned that he was not guilty. The members of the Protected Home Circle held a social last evening in the I. O. O. F. banqueting ball in honor of Mr. and Mrs. James H. Hughes, of this place, Mrs. Nancy Foley" and Mrs. Kate BurnB, members of the Circle. The last two ladies have moved to DuBois and Mr. Hughes will move to a lumber tract near Ohl, where he will spend summer in the woods for benefit of his health. Thera was a large attendance at the social and all present had a good time. Refreshments weretserved. Laverick-Ditch. Joseph R. Laverick and Miss Mary Ditch were married at the bride's home at Soldier at 3.00 p. m. Monday, June 4, 1900, by 'Squire E. Neff. Rev. Jelbart Will Preach. Rev. James H. Jelbart, pastor ot the New Bethlehem M. E. church, will preach in the Reynoldsville M. E. church next Sunday morning and even ing, in the absence of Dr. Parsons, who will spend Sunday in Chautauqua. Birthday Surprise Party. Elmer Ellonberger was forty years old last Monday, June 4, and about fifty friends gave him a birthday surprise party Monday evening. The friends carried refreshments with them, which was served at a reasonable hour. Mr. Ellonberger received a numbor of presents. Operation for Appendicitis. Charles Flynn, son of Mrs. Mary Flynn and brother of Lawyer Clement W. Flynn, was taken to the Mercy Hospital In Pittsburg Thursday after noon and that evening was operated on for appendicitis. He is getting along as well as could be expected. Dr. J. B." Neale and Lawyer Flynn took Charles to the hospital. Punxs'y Club Defeated. A base ball team from Punxsutawney played a picked up team at Reynolds ville on Decoration Day and the visitors were badly defeated, score 3-lfl in favor home team. Smith-Young Wedding. Sidney Smith, son of Congressman W. O. Smith and grandson of Mr. and Mrs. John S. Smith, of Reynoldsville, will be married at nine o'clock this evening to Miss Lillian Young, of Punxsutawney. The soon-to-be groom was recently appointed postmaster at Punxsutawney. A number of Reynolds ville people will go to Punxs'y to attend the wedding. Glass Plant Shut Down. The Star Glass Co. plant at this place was shut down the middle of last week for the summer. The output during this fire was the largest Bince the factory was started and the glass was the best ever made at the factory. We understand that the market was yery poor. A large number of the glass workers have gone to other places to work in factories. Looking for Location. A letter was received here several days ago from a large shit t factory in eastern part of the state that is look ing for a new location, inquiring for a building suitable to accommodate the plant and if there would be any trouble In securing sufficient help to. operate the plant. The letter was addressed to the board of trade, but as our board is defunct we don't know what action will be taken In the matter. It Is plain to all that Reynoldsville should have a live board of trade. Decoration Day Orators. Raymond E. Brown and Will A. Reynolds, two young men of this place, who are in law offices in Brookville, Mr. Brown as an assistant to Charles Corbett, and Mr. Reynolds student in office of Carmalt & Strong, delivered orations on Decoration ' Day. Mr. Brown spoke at Brookvillo, and the Republican in speaking of it says : "A most stirring, forceful and patriotic oration was delivered by Raymond E. Brown, Esq." A report Mr. Reynolds' address at Richa-dsville has not been published yet. Wedding This Evening. At eight o'clock this evening, June 6, Miss Annie Olive S. Schlablg and W. Alfred DoHartowill be united in mar riage at home of parents of the bride-to-be, Mr. and Mrs. Milton J. Schlablg. Rev. J. C. McEntire will officiate. A few neighbors will witnoss the cere mony. Alfred DeHart, who hus boon working at Now Kensington a year and a half, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wil liam DeHart of this place. Mr. and Mrs. DeHart will remain here until Sunday and will then go to New Ken sington, where they will reside. Wedding Anniversary Surprise. Friday, June 1st, was the thirtieth anniversary of the wedding of Rev. and Mrs. J. W. Myers and their friends gave them one of the most agree able and complete surprises that they have experienced in their journey through life. Friday evening about for ty persons assembled at the Lutheran parsonage uninvited and unexpected, but heartily welcomed to enjoy the anniversary evening with Rev. Myers and his eBtlmable wife. The visitors were not unmindful of the fact that on such occasions presents and refresh ments are customary, and they carried with them cut glass, china and other valuable and useful things for presents and also a generous supply of refresh ments. It was one of those oasis that a minister occasionally enjoys in his life's work. Pastor and people separat ed that night with an Increased cordiali ty for each other. , MURDER AND SUICIDE. Richard Nelson Stabbed David Wilson to Death and Nelson Committed Suicide in Jail. A double tragedy resulted from a drunken carousal at Falls Creek on Decoration Day. The barrooms of Clearfield county were closed on Decora tion Day and David Wilson and Richard Nelson, both young men of DuBois, were among a number of DuBois fellows that went to Falls Creek that day because the barrooms were open and they could get something to drink. Wilson and Nelsoi, got into a quarrel and Nelson stabbed Wilson. The knife blade was thrust Into Wilson several times and the knife penetrated Wilson's left lung, causing his.death Monday evening of this week. Nelson was arrested and taken to Brook yllle jail Thursday and soraotlme yesterday forenoon, after he learned that Wilson had died, he committed suicide by tuking carbolic acid. Nel son's body was taken to Houtzdale for intorment. David Beck Dead. David Beck, who was a resident of Winslow and Washington townships for a number of years, died In the hospital at Warren on Friday last, June 1st, 190(1. His body was brought to Hughes & Fleming undertaking rooms in Reyn oldsville Saturday evening and on Mon day was taken to Emerickville, where funeral service was held in Lutheran church, conducted by Rev.' J. W. Myers, and Interment was made in the Luther an cemetery. Mr. Beck had a stroke of paralysis seven years ago 19th of last month and was taken to hospital at that time. He was blind the past year. He was born In Beaver township, Nov, 4, 1842, and was in his 64th year. He is survived by two daugbtt-rs and one son. David W. Beck, of West Reynoldsville, la son of deceased. He Is also survived by two brothers, Heztkiah and Uriah Bock, and throe sisters, Mrs. Amos Hetrick, Mrs. George Holman and Mary Beck. Gold Prospectors. Albert J. and Milton L. Dempsey, of Leadville, Col., are visiting their parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Dempsey, in West Reynoldsville, who celebrated their golden wedding on Monday of this week. Albert Dempsey went west nineteen years ago and thU Is his first trip east of the Mississippi In that time. Milton Dempsey left here seven years ago and after spending a couple of years in California, Mexico and Arizona, located at Leadville. AVe clipped the following from the Loadvillo Col. Dempsey are in town from over the range, preparing to leave on a vacation trip to Pennsylvania, where they go to visit their old home and participate in the golden wedding anniversary of their parents. Children's day will be observed in the Presbyterian church next Sunday morning. A good program has been arranged by the Sunday school. Children's day exercises have been postponed by the Baptist and Meth odist Sunday schools until Sunday, June 17. Will Buy Austin Organ. The trustees of the Methodist Epis copal church decided last Friday even ing to buy an Austin pipe organ for the new church. Assist ant Principal Not Elected. The school board of this borough re organized last night with J. S. Ham mond a-3 president, W. H. Bell secre tary and John H. Kaucber treasurer. Dr. J. W. Foust and Ira S. Smith re tired from the board and Dr. J. C. Sayors and Dr. R. DeVere King are the new members. Members of the board now are : J. S. Hammond, W. H. Bell, Dr. L. L. Means, Dr. John H. Murray, Dr. R. DeVere King and Dr. J. C. Sayers. All the old teachers that made ap plication were re-elected. Miss Lois Robinson, who taught room No. 9 the latter part of term and was very success ful, only applied for substitute teacher, and Miss Maude Meek was elected teacher of that room. Miss Meek was the only new teacher elected last night. The board did not elect an assistant principal last night. This position was made vacant by Prqf. N. P. Dawson leased the Reynolds Park, better known as Frank's Park, for one year for the pur pose of making it an athletic park. The Enterprise Athletic Association's lease for third floor of the Smith & McClure building has expired and the Associa tion will move out of that building the first of next month and Mr. Dawson ex pects to arrange for the Association to meet in Athletic Park. The pavilion will be enlarged and other improve ments made In the park if the Athletic Association makes that headquarters. Commencement Friday. The Cathollo school closes on Friday of this week and commencement exer cises will be held in the school hall Friday afternoon and evening. Reynoldsville, Rathmel and Beechwoods Patriots and Friends Scattered Flowers Lavishly. Wednesday, May 30, the nation's memorial day for the men who wore willing to sacrifice their all in lime of war for love and loyalty to their country, was celebrated at Reynoldsville and other places in this section In a befitting manner. Many of the business placos, including the barrooms, of Reynolds ville were closed several hourR during the forenoon and a large number of our people took part In the memorial exor cises. The Keystone band lent its cheering presence to the occasion and by its excellent muBio did much to make the Decoration Day program a success. The parade formed oa Main street about nine o'clock and marched to Beulah cemetery, whore beautiful and fragrant flowers were strewn on the graves of the departed veterans and tho utsuai Grand Army exercises were observed. Firing squads from the Sons ofVeteran's Camp visited all the other cemeteries nearby to fire a salute oyer the graves of the soldiers who have answered the last bugle call. BEECHWOODS. There Is no other countryside where such a large crowd of people assemble on Memorial day as they do in Beech woods. A Memorial Association was organized several years ago by the patriotic and loyal citizens of Beech woods and the association has charge of the memorial exercises on the 30th of May each yean In the forenoon people from far and near meet at tho Associa tion park at cross roads, about half mile from Beechwoods cemetery, form In line, headed by a brass band, and march to the cemetery, where appropriate memorial services are held. This year the usual exercises were held and there were at least two thousand people present. At the cemetery Rev. J. M. Vanllorn offered prayer, the people joined in singing America, the bancL played, Rev. F. M. Redinger delivered an address, flowers were stiewn on soldiers' graves, band played and then the people returned to park for dinner.
