NEW METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH DEDICATED SUNDAY Magnificent $40,000 Edifice Dedicated by Bishop J. F. Berry After all Indebtedness had been Cleared by Voluntary Offerings from Members and Friends. It was a Jubilee ' Day for Methodism. The boautiful and miitftiltlcont now $40,000 Methodist Episcopal church in Reynoldsvlllo was dedicated last Sun day evening. Mr. Joseph W. Powell, the most successful church financier in the country, who devotes all his time to that kind of work, had chtu'go of the Sunday services, which bega 1 at 11.00 in the morning and the itt scrvico closed at 11.00 p. m. Counting a doht of $1,000 on the par-ionae an I the half on $2,000 pipe organ that is to bo put dedicated the church and after the ded ication Mr. 1'owull organized a chapter of the Brotherhood of HI. Paul with a membership of 107 men. An article on this organization will be found else where in this issue. The now church has been cimiplotml and the amount of the inc1 ilituiliu'iw provided for, but the work f paying the indebtcdm ss has not boci finished and will not be for many men l'S. In the phurch, thorn was a debt of al most $21,000 to be provided for on Sun day, and $18,000 of that amount had to be ptedgod before the church coidd bo dedicated. With that large sum to raise and a miners' strike just declared it seemed to many that the church would not be dodlcated Sunday, but by the assistance of the official members Mr. Powell's excellent plan was woll 1 -m v.v -1 CM'- Av. , Rev. Perry A. Reno, Deceased. executed, and the $20,")00 w.v pledged before nine o'clock Sunday evening. After a half hour of Informal greet ing the publio service began at 9.30 a. m. ' At 10.00 Bishop Joseph F. Berry, LL; D., of Buffalo, preached an able and eloquent sermon. It was plain, practical and full of beautiful thought. After the Bishop's sermon Mr. Powell presented bis plan for raising money. Ho Issued three year, $.'16.00 bonds, giv ing the privilege of making weekly or monthly payments on the bonds. Al though the Individual members of the nblireH PAQnnnilflfl (rranriln nnrl (ha societies of the church, Helping Hand, Epworth League, Junior Loague, Mis sionary Society, subscribed liberally, and friends of the church helped, yet . the amount was not raised at the morn ing service. At 2.45 p. m. Sunday school was held and the classes assumed about $2,000 of the indebtedness.. At 6.00 p. m. an Epworth League meeting was held. At 7.00 p. m. the public ser vice began and after the opening exer cises Mr. Powell gave forty minute ad dress explaining thejBrotherhood of St. Paul. After the address the large- congregation rwas again asked to help provide- for the debt.- After about three-quarters of an hour of effective work- by Mr. Powell and his assistants, Mr. Powell an nounced that the amount had been pledged. Ho also made the pleasing statement that Mr,. Andrew Carnegie ( would pay can on a jz.auu pipe organ for the church and that a Reynoldsville gentleman, whose name he did not Lention, would pay the other $1,250 on the organ. The congregation then joined heartily In singing'tbe doxology. They sang it over twice. Bishop Berry will havo to bo active to bo able to moot the pledgoB given. Tho Helping Hand had subscribed $2,000 to tho church bo fore dedication day and then subscribed $.',000 more that day, making a. total of $5,000 for tho Helping Hand. While the trustees and Pastor Parsons are entitled to great credit for the im posing edifice that has been erected, yet unto Rev. Perry A. Rono, deceased, is duo greator credit, and tho church is a monument to him, for it was Mr, Rono, who by persistont efforts, per suaded the board of trustees to build a now church. With tho exception ol perhaps $2,000, Rev. Reno personally solicited and secured all the subscrip tions to the church fund that was made before dedication day, and for that reason we say the church is a monu ment to tho ambition and actlvoness of Rev. Reno. A beautiful tablet will bo put in the auditorium of tho church In memory of Mr. Reno, tho noble and zealous christian minister who has gone to his roward. The now church Is not only a credit to Methodism, but it Is a credit to our town and enhances the proper y oT town. Tho church is 87 x 126 feet. Exterior is Hummelstown brownston-. Thoro are two towers on building, a.- cut will show. ' There are two ent -ancos to ;:fi- '.'',: 3. , iff. ' - Rev. J. A. Parsons, Ph. D. auditorium from Fifth street and one from Jackson street. Two vestibulos, with tile floors. The auditorium Is beautiful. The walls apd colling are nicely decorated, the windows are mag nificent, as fine as will be found in many of the large city churches. The win dows represent scenes ki life of Christ and were presontod by following per sons : "Boy Christ," gift from -Mrs. Julia A. Reynolds ; "Chr'st and Rich Young Ruler," in memory of Mrs. Ma llnda Melllnger, given by Mr. and Mrs. Ira S. Smith, Mr. L. O. Melllnger and sisters ; "Ascension," in memory of Al bert Reynolds, presented by his wife ; "Jesus the Light of the World," in chairs. Tho chandelier in Sunday school room has 25 electric lights and 12 gas lights and there are also a num ber of side lights. Tho entire Sundny school room is carpeted with brussels carpet. Tho liulies' parlor is a cozy and plens ant room. A largo rug on floor, fire place and very pretty mantle. Tho choir and organ are back of the pulpit. Tho choir room Is off to right of choir. It will bo furnished. A number of the windows in the Sun day school room and other parts of the church were presented by Sunday school clasaos and friends. In the basement is a festal room, kitchen, pantry, two toilet rooms and boiler room. McKane Harl, of Punxsutawney, was the contractor, and Daniel Brewer, of Reynoldsville, superintended the work and tho Methodist people can con gratulate themselves that such a capable man as Mr. Brewer was secured to superintend the work. It is a good substantial building, not skimped at any point, and a credit to Mr. Harl and Mr. B rower. Buggies.
