PUNX'Y GETS BARRACKS.
One of the Four Companies of State
Police Located at Punxs'y.
On Monday it was officially announced
that one of the four companies of state
police authorized by the last legislature
would be "located In Punxsutawney.
The announcement was made by Capt.
John C. Groome, superintendent of the
Department of State Police, of Harris
burg, who was here and accepted the
terms and conditions offered by the
Board of Trade and prominent citizens
for the location of the barracks at this
place.
For many years there had been a de
mand from the country districts
throughout the state for better police
service. Robberies were being commit
ted on every hand, safes were being
cracked and lawless men roaming about
at will. The local officers were with
out sufficient authority or means to
leave their bailiwicks to pursue these
outlaws and the consequence was that
most of these malefactors escaped. In
fractions of the game and fish laws and
the statutes relating tooforests and fires
are constantly being violated and the
establishment of this new department Is
designed to give country districts a ser
vice much the same as that vouchsafed
by the police force of a city.
As a beginning the law provides for
four companies, to be composed of a
captain, a lieutenant, five sergeants and
fifty privates each, a total of 57 men.
The other companies will be loca'od at
GroonBburg, Reading and Wllkosbarro,
respectively. The organization at this
place will bo known as Troop C.
Captian J. F. Robinson, formerly city
editor of the Bradford Star, and an
officer In the Sixteenth Regiment, N.
G. P., will have charge of the Punxsu
tawney station. The men have all been
selected and about 50 of them have been
ordered to report In Punxsutawney Fri
day and Saturday. While here Monday
Captain Groom and Captain Robinson
had plans drawn up for repairing and
remodeling the main building In the
fair grounds which will be used for
temporary quarters. Work was begun
on the building at once and until It Is
ready the mon will be provided for In
town. PunvButawnoy Spirit
B. R. & P. Ry. Clerical Orders.

be issued by the Buffalo, Rochester &
Pittsburg Ry. as In former years to
