Statistics show startling mortality,
from appendicitis and peritonitis. To
prevent and euro theso awful diseases,
there is just one reliable remedy. Dr.
King's New Life I'ills. M. Flannory,
of 14 Custom House I Mace, Chicago,
says: "They have no equal for Consti
pation and Biliousness." 2"ic at II. Alex
Stoke's, druggist.
It is reported from many places In
the county that horses are dying off at
an unsually rapid rate from Influenza
and lung trouble. During the past two
weeks l.'l horses died In tho vicinity of
Grange. The disease Is said to be of a
most violent nature and unless the
animal attacked is perfectly sound tho
result is almost sure to bo a speedy
death. Dr. Belhune, the veterinary
surgeon, of this place, states that If tho
proper treatment is n-sorteii to as soon
as the disease is discovered he chances
are good for a rapid receve y hut that
delay is almost sin e to rest! fatally.

" liuylnir a Horse.
No (sensible inau will buy n horse of
any value nnd one which ho expects to
do him good service without submit
ting to a qualified veterinary surgeon,
says a writer in a foreign exchange.
Many nu unprofessional mnn has a
good eye for a horse, but he knows lit
tle or nothing of Its structure nnd anat
omy compared with the trained veteri
narian. Moreover, the amateur Judge
of a horse Is npt to fly to certain points
where he thinks he may detect some
thing and overlook others. The veteri
nary surgeon who is examining horses
nlmost every day not only brings his
scientific knowledge to bear, but con
ducts his examination In a systematic
manner, going all over the horse before
he hns done with him. If there bo
manifest unsoundness it will bo discov
ered nnd pointed out hut It Is in the
discovery and Indication of incipient
unsoundness that the training nnd
practice of the veterinarian are of su
preme value.

Nearly every shopkeeper In the land
Is forced In the conduct of his busi
ness to wear the mnsk of diplomacy,
fflils was illustrated the other day In
a Fifth avenue art store.
An elderly lady, connected with some
of the best New York families, made
her purchases and paid a small sum
on account of a former bill nud the
goods just bought. As she placed the
new bill In her reticule she said to
tho attentive shopkeeper:
"Now er no bothering me about
this, you know; no sending around to
my place. If you do send a mnn I'll
set the dog on him."
"You'll not be troubled about It, mad
am, ' was the Riiave answer. "Take
your time about It; all the time you
want." And he smiled like a seraph
nntll the old dowager's coach rolled
off up the street. Then he turned to a
friend who was taking It all In and
muttered:
"Durn her old picture, I. won't see a
red cent of that money In nine months!
But what can you do? You've got to
