Rural Free Delivery.
The people of Jefferson county are
now beginning to realize the advantag
es of rural free delivery. Three routes
have been established recently and
others are In progress To secure rural
free delivery It la necessary to get not
less than a hundred signers, all of whom
must be heads of families, on a route
from twenty to twonty-flve miles In
length. The roads must be good, and
there must be no unbrldged streams on
thorn. The route must be so arranged
that the carrier will not be required to
travel over the same road twice while
ranking his dally rounds. Rural routes
should, wherever possible, bo supplied
from a railway-supplied postofflce. To
map out a route of the proper lenglh
and get at least one hundred heads of
families to sign the petition involves
considerable gratuitous labor on the
part of somo one In the community.
Hut It U worth the effort, as lttsagrent
convenience to the people In the rurtl
diHtrlots, who can buy postage stamps,
register letter and purchase money
orders from the delivery wagon right
at their doors. We have been urging
the people of Jefferson county to peti
tion for rural free delivery for the past
two years, but they seem slow to take
hold. The counties Of Armstrong,
Clarion and Indiana are full of rural free
delivery routes uhd new ones are being
established almost every week. If the
conditions are right rural free delivery
may be had for tho asking, and It is
abundantly worth asking for. Punx

Good Advice to Oirls.
Hero is some common sense advice
given by a Missouri editor to the girls
of his town : ' Don't hang around the
depot unless you are going away or are
there to meet frlonds. Don't go to tbe
poHtofllce and shove about In a miscel
laneous crowd. Don't go to church and
take a back seat with your escort, then
whispor and glgglo throughout the
sermon. Don t be loud and boisterous
and Blangy. Stand on your dignity and
don't form acquaintances quickly. Don't
carry your heart on your sleeve and
dnu't throw yourself Into tbe arms of
every good looking drummer or every
well dressed stranger who comes to
town. Be womanly, be modest, be
thoughtful and serious at times ; don't
unnox yourself, and thus loose woman's
swootest charms."
Disastrous Wreck.
Carelessness Is responsible for many a
railway wreck and the same causes are
making human wrecks of sufferers from
Throat and bung troubles. But since
tho advent of Dr. King's New Discov
ery for Consumption, Coughs and Colds,
even the worst casos can bo cured, and
hopoless resignation Is no longer neces
sary. Mrs. Lois Cragg, of Dorchester,
Mass., Is one of many whose life was
saved by Dr. King's New Discovery.

THE STATE GRANGE.
J. T. Ailman, Press Correspondent.
Miehtgnn Is one of tho strongest
grange states In tho Union. The In
fluence of the grange Is felt and admit
ted by all purl les. The State Grange
has a strong Legislative Committee of
5 members among whom are tho Master
and Sec. of the State Grange. They
are prompt and untiring In carrying out
the instructions of the 8 la to Grange in
legislative matters. One of the subjects
receiving especial attention this full Is
reform In Primary Elections. The re
form element demands a law providing
for tbe nomination of Governor, Lieu
tenant Governor and members of the
Legislature by a direct vote of the
people. It is needless to say that the
grange there favors this reform. Every
candidate for legislative honors has
been interrogated as to bis position
and tho members of the grunge over
tho statu know where tho different
candidates stand. It is not lo any sense
a party question and no doubt many
nienih. rs of tho order will rlso above
parly and vote for or against men en
tirely on the ground of their position on
this question.
Among the many good things that
tho grange Is doing, His the increasing
the rauks of independent voter,
-o-
The delegates to tho National Grange
aro packing their grips and will be
ready to start for Oregon on the first
train after they have voted on election
dBy. This is tho most truly representa
tive body of farmers that meets any
where In tho United States. Thoy will
go to the Paclfto coust on the crest of
the wave of prosperity, so far as the
organization is concerned, and those
who expect them to speak positively
and clearly In tho intorestof agriculture
will not be disappointed.
-o-
Of no less importance to the patrons
and farmers of Pcnn'a is the coming
State Grange mooting to ho held In the
city of of Erie, Deo. 13-10. It promises
to be one of the largest and most en
thusiastic State Grango meetings over
hold. If the plodding farmer, who has
all his life novcr looked beyond bUfarm
and the narrow limits of his little com
munity, could spend at least a day In
this mooting ho would got such a rova
lutton of the dignity of his culling and
the possibilities before tho American
farmer as would be a revelation to hlra.
Why should not evory one of the more
than :i00,000 farms of the stato be
represented thero ? What respect would
bo paid to tha utturonces of such a body

A large number of soutb-slde citizens
were in Brookville the first of the week,
being .-called here as witnesses in an
equity case brought by a number of

Argument in the case was beard before
Judge Allison O. Smith, of Clearfield,
in tbe absenoe of Judge Reed.' The
citizens of the village aboved named
contend that owing to the numerous
explosions occurring in and about the
plant life Is made very unpleasant and

first on the ground they are asking tbe
