    STREET TAVINQ QUESTION.
8hould Be Submitted to the Voters at
November Election.
Tho artlelo published in Thr STAtt
last week, suggesting ,hat t,,u 'xwRh
bo bonded for :10,(MM for tho purpose of
paving Main and Jurkson streets nnd
thnt It bo submitted to tho voters if
this borough nt tho Novrinbur election,
recoived tho hearty Indorsement of a
largo number of our citizens. It must
not bo understood t.hnt it would only
cost t.10,000 to pave both streets. At a
rough estimate it will coot ?ili,00), but
it Is expected that the property owners
on caeh ildo of tho streets will pay one
third of tho expenses of paving In front
of tholr property, or property owners
two-thirds nl expense and horouirh one
third. There is no doubt but that the
majority of tho property owners on
Main and .lnokson streets would enter
Into an agreement to pity their por
tion of tho paving expenses, and we
believe if town council gives tho citi
zens an opportunity to vote on the bond
question in Novemlier nnd all the vot
ers understand tho question thoroughly
that there in no doubt hut that tho
majority vote w ill bo to bond tho bor
ough for a sullieient nmount to pave
Main and Jackson streets, There Is no
argufnent against tho fact that these
two streets should be paved. Tho only
question is bow shall tho money bo
raised ?
Tho valuation of property In this
borough is about ?oO,OiM, H"1 'l ,,n
bonded for 7 per cent, ol that amount,
which would bo Jlli.OOl). Tho borough
now carries $11,000 bonds, not including
the school bonds, but tho school bond is
separate and would not interfere with
bonding tho borough for 7 pi r cent,
for other purposes if neco rary.
As stated In Tun Stah last week,
Main street is in a very hud condition
and will have to bo repaired not later
than next spring, therefore it Is im

portant that the street paving question
be voted on at the fall election so that
all preliminaries can bo arranged in
time to begin paving next spring.
Over $2,000 was expended on our
streets last year and what were they
like this spring, and every fall and
spring y Simply horrible ! If tho bor
ough Is bonded for 1:10,000 tho Interest
would only lie l, 200 per annum, leav
ing somo for a slnkli"; fund each year
nut of what Is annually spent on the
streets, spoiling tho streets In dry
weather Bnd doing them no good for
the muddy seasons. Besides that, we
would have streets that would bo a
credit to our town and everybody could
be proud of. Tho bonds can be Issued
for twenty or thirty years, giving the
fut tiro generation an opportunity to
help pay the indebtedness.
If bonds had not been Issued we would
never have had the One school building
wo now luive nor the excellent, school
advantages the children now enjoy.
The people of to-day don't have to
liquidate this bonded Indebtedness
alone, hut tho young people now get
ting the advantages of a good school
system because of tho brlek edifice that
Is a credit to our town, will have an
opportunity to help pay the debt In
years to come. Who would want to go
