J- J "t News of Interest i At a recent meeting of Clarion Co., Pomona strong resolutions were adopt ed endorsing the Initiative and Refer endum. The members of the grange are Informing themselves on this Im portant subject. Many thinking people look upon this as the hope of the Re public and the- only way In which a government of the people, by tho pooplo, for tho people can bo maintained. Clearfield is rapidly becoming one of the leading grange counties In the state. Since Jan. 1st, 1903, three new granges have been organized In the county In addition to the 21 that were already working. The last one was organized on July 17, by E. M. Davis, making the twontleth In the Stato for this year. Through these columns I desire to say to Patrons and friends of the Order, In Pennsylvania, that never In the past has the month of August wltnossed such active Interest In Orange Fiold Meetings. I have boon unable to accept on account of conflicting dates, all of the calls that have come to this office to address these gatherings, aside from the series of twenty-six meetings In as many dlfferont counties that have been systematically arranged by the State Orange. Let these meetings be followed up, by each Patron Inviting their HOME AOAIN. The Greatest Show on Earth Now Greater than Ever. The Barnum & Bailey Greatest Show on Earth will exhibit at DuDols, Pa., August 21. Owing to the magnitude of the show the route Is necessarily re stricted to the large towns, but low ex cursion rates and special trains, where necessary, have been secured to order to accommodate the people of the small er towns who wish to see the wonders of this mammoth amusement Institution. The Barnum & Bailey circus returned to America last year after a remarkable tour of Europe extending over a poriod of five years. During the Interim the show has grown enormously ; hundreds of now and novel acts and big arenlc features have beon secured, while the Inhorent American love for spectacular display has been anticipated by the production of a stupendous moving, living picture of ancient Oriental pomp and pageantry. This resplendent dis play Is, however, simply a prelude to the olrous performance, which serves to Introduce 300 arenlo celebrities from all parts of tho world. The performances they present in the triple rings, on the Btages, and In mid-air, Is startling In Its magnitude and daring novelty. Fun lovers are not neglected and 25 famous clowns keep the audlenoe In an Intermittent vhlrl of wonder and mer riment. One of the biggest sensations of the year la Cyclo, the Kinetic Demon, who braves Injury and Instant death by a sensational bicycle ride on the Inside of a perpendicular circle. The ancient and modern races and feats of strength and endurance presented on the hippo drome track as a climax to the perform ance are thrilling la the extreme. "Coco," the baby elephant, the two giant glraffos and the other rare zoo logical features in the menagerie are attracting universal attention, while the miniature naval display which Is presented In connection with the zoo, and the congress of "living human cur iosities," everywhere arouses the most pronounced patriotic enthusiasm. This yoar's street parade Is entirely and gor geous beyond anything in the proces sional line hitherto attempted. Every one who attends the Barnum & Bailey olrous Is sure of a seat, and every seat 1b provided with a comfortable foot rest. The tonts are lighted by a new electrical system. Suicide Prevented. The startling announcement that a preventive of suicide had been discover ed will interest many. A run down systom, or despondency Invariably pre cede sulolde and something has been found that will prevent that condition which makes suicide likely. At the first thought of self destruction take Electric Bitters. It being a great tonic and nervine will strengthen the nerves and build up the system. You can got a bargain at Nolan's shoe Btore. They have about fifty pair of shoes that tbey will sell at a big reduc tion. These shoes are good styles. to the Grangers J 1 friends to Identify themselves with the Grange and the abundant harvest of membership tho oomlng autumn will bo rich reward, ever adding strength and influenco to the already growing organized body of farmers who are bound In one groat fraternal brother hood to act In concert for tho advance ment and elevation of all citizens. A grand work fought with unlimited possibilities. Fraternally, A. M. Cornf.Uj. Soo. Penn'a. State Orange. About a yoar ago some one, who might have known bettor, and who probably did know better, started tho story that the grango In Pennsylvania was rapidly going to pieces and that the Stato officers were racking their brains and doing all they could to save tho organization from complete collapse. This stoiy was copied In many of the newspaper in tho Stato and no doubt did some of the. harm it was Intended to do. The facts are the grange never en joyed greater prosperity than it has done dur'ng tho last throe years. As an lllustiatlon of its growth, dues were paid to State Orange on 257 more members for the quarter ending March 31st, 1903, than for the corresponding quarter of 1(102. - Dog Days. Dog Days began July 12 and are supposed to last six weeks. ' Among other things that are supposod to trans pire In this period are that snakes and toads go blind, dogs go mad and people go crazy. , Persons who claim they are not superstitious believe in the bad in fluence of this period of the year, and always feel relief when tho end comes and the sultry season of dog days is at an end. Its connection with dogs comes from the fact that during this time the sun as viewed from the earth Is apparently In the constellation which the ancients named Canis Major, or tho Groat Dog, from Its fancied resemblance to a dog In Its outline. Its connection with the other things enumerated is probably jti9t about as tangiblo as that. Exchange. Last Sunday Excursion to Niagara Falls. Tho Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburg R'y will run the last Sunday excursion of the season to Buffalo and Nlugara Falls on August Kith, 1003. The most important changes noted are as follows; Non residents and unnaturalized for clgn born residents must secure a license before hunting in this ita.to ; fee, $10. Penalty, $25, and forfeiture of all gunning paraphernalia found in possession of arrostcd parties. Guns and hunting paraphernalia will bo sold unless fi no and costs are paid, and the fact that Imprisonment is suf fered will not effect tho rolcase of these articles. Costs cannot bo Imposed upon officers whose duty it is to seo that the game law Is enforced, but said costs must be paid either by defendant or the county. Ono of tho most Important changes made In the fish law was the repeal of section 9 of tho act of 1901, which al lowed the uso of seines in taking carp, catfish, eels and suckers. The use or possession of a seine (except a mlanow seine) is now forbidden. Penalty, $100 fine and three to six months jail im prisonment. Punxsutawney Spirit, Puts an End to it All.
