Pressure of Llfht Waves.
Nichols and Hull made, before tho
late meeting of the American Astron
omical Society, a demonstration of the
pressure of light waves. The appara
tus war an hour glass vacuum tube,
which contained some carbon sponge
dust of particles oniy ont or two mi
crons In diameter, the chamber having
been very carefully exhausted to as
high a vacuum as possible. When
the dust was allowed to fall from the
upper to the lower chamber In a pow
erful arc-light beam the larger par
ticles were seen to fall vertically, while
the finer ones fell out of plumb and
away from the light The angle of
deviation was staled to be about that
to be expected on the radiant push
hypothesis.

Some time ago the directors of the
Bank of England were startled to re
ceive an invitation to met an unknown
man in the strong room of the bank

ed the next night, lu spite of a depo
sition to regard the letter as a hoax, by
police and nothing happened.
The next phase of the mystery was
more astonishing thnn ever. A heavy
chest of papers and securities taken
from the strong room arrived at the
bank with a letter, complnlnlng that
the directors hod set the police upon
the writer, and that he bad, there
fore, not nppcared ns promised, but
to prove that he was neither a thief
nor a fool he sent a chest of papers
he hnd tnken from the bnnk. Let a

Boston Harbor froze over In January
of 1844, and tho advertised sailing of
the Britannia, then in dock, seemed
surely to be Impossible. But the mer
chants of Boston would not have It
bo. They met and voted to cut a
way, at their own expense, through the
ice, that the steamer might sail prac
tically on time. The contract for cut
ting the necessary channels was given
to merchants engaged, like Frederick
Tudor, In the export of Ice not from
the harbor. Their task was to cut,
within the space of three days a chan
nel about ten miles long. For tools
they had the best machinery used In
cutting fresh-water Ice, and horse
power was employed. The ice was
from sis to twelve luches In thickness.

A Berlin paper of recent date, In an
article on the "cake walk," the "new
American dance, which threatens to
become popular In Europe," gives this
startling account of the origin of ths
dance. "At a dinner given by a
wealthy, plantation owner a rich negro
nnd bis wife were guests. The black
pair were so Inflated with pride at be
ing there and walked with so much
studied 'air' that they attracted much
attention. When the black couple
had retired the host offered a priza of
a cake to the man and woman giving
the best Imitation of th blnck pair's
walk. Everybody wanted to win the
prlzo, men and women did their best'
to produce the pose and step of the
high-nosed negroes, and that was the
first cake walk." The careless Ger

the planter who entertains his black
neighbors and makes fun of them after

is angry with the United States for
sending the cake walk to Europe, for
he says: "Last year there was ex
