Circumstantial Evidence. Perhaps tho moBt pronounced dram- atlo hit of years, and ono that will live when our children are old men and women, Is Sun & Fowler's beautiful pro duction of Circumstantial Evidence, by James M. Martin.- For tho past ten years Mr. Martin has been making his home In Chicago. Ono morning he got up and found tho papers full of a shock ing murder case. It appears one Strong bad, In a beastly state of intoxication, whittled hU wife to death with a razor. Strong was dressed in a light suit of clothes. He left a saloon on W. Mad ison street a few minutes before 11.40 p. m., Walked six blocks and was found bending over the dead body of his wife at 11.45 p. m., the police having been at tracted to the place by his cries. The razor with which the crime was com mitted was never found. How he could successfully cut his wife's throat with out as much as getting a drop of blood on bis hands, much less his clothing, some people could novor guess, although these facts were fully brought out at the three trials. At the third trial he begged the authorities to have him hypnotized, it being the general belief that while tu a soporific state, the sub ject will speak the exact truth, butovon this was denied the poor man and he was hanged according to the require ments of thu law a fow weeks after. It has since transpired beyond the shadow of a doubt the man was Innocent and tho real culprit escaped. The, trial, conviction and judicial murder of this man so worked upon the feelings of Mr. Martin that ho determined to write a drama and call it Circumstantial Evi dence. The piece was purchased from Mr. Martin after its completion by Gus Sun and Frod D. Fowler about a year ago and put upon tho road. People who have scon the production pronounco it a masterpiece. Tho author has woven Into tho play a beautiful love story, bright flasbos of comedy blended with the mast dramatic and pathetic scenes. The Btory bIiowb bow easy It is for a man to bo convicted on Circumstantial Evidence. Tbe hero of tho play Is all but banged. ' Ho Is saved at a moment when seconds are hours. Tho produc tion In Its entirety will be seen in this city at Reynolds opera house January 27th, 1003. Value of Drinking Fountains. Every town and villugo In America owes It to humanity to set up ut least one drinking fountain where horses and dogs can slako thoir thirst. But few towns are bo situated that this cannot be oonvonlunlly arranged for, and it will bo found to pay, even as an Invest ment. A farmer will drive a mile far ther to reach such a place, and there Is Seldom a mad dog scare wbore water Is plentiful. St. Marys Qttzctte.
