rector in the State.
In Allegheny on Tuesday evening
Miss Kate Cassatt McKnlght, who was
elected to the office of school director of
the Fifth ward, of Allegheny, was duly
Installed to membership In tho board of
school controllers. Some of the Pitts
burg papers, in commenting on the fact
of Miss McKnlght's election, said Bhe
was probably the first woman to hold
the of!' co of school director in the state
of Pennsylvania. Washington county
should have tho honor, at least in pre
forenco to Alleghony county. At tho
February eloction in 1901, in tho elec
tion of school directors at Beallsvlllo,
Mrs. Mary Flick, who was duly suggest
ed at the primaries by the Democratic
party, was elected, and on June 8, 1901,
she was sworn in as a member of the
Beallsvlllo school board. Washington

West Reynoldsvllle comes in ahead
of Alleghony, and is not behind Bealls
vlllo in the eloction of a woman for
school director. At the February elec
tion in 1901 Mrs. Margaret Moore,
Democrat, was electod school director
in West Reynoldsvlllo borough and in
June, 1901, was sworn in.

Sheriff W. E. Chesnutt took posseB
slon of the oounty jail Saturday, his
father, J. M. Chesnutt, vacating the
county bastlle and taking possession of
