A RiiRslnti Kctitlemnu tells a funny
story of his first encounter with the
EukIIhI) IniiKiinKe.
The dny after his arrival In London
he nmde a call on a friend In Park
lane, and on IcavlnR the premises In
scribed In his notebook what he sup
posed to be the correct address.
The next dny, desiring to so to the
same place again, he railed a cabman
nml pointed to the address that he had
written down. The cabman looked
hlni over, laughed, cracked the whip,
ind drove away without him.
This experience being repeated with
two or three other cabmen, the Rus
sian turned Indignantly to the police,
with no better results. One officer
would laugh, another would tap bis
bead and moke a motion Imitating the
revolution of a wheel.
Finally the poor foreigner gave It up,
and, with a great deal of difficulty,
recalling the landmarks which be bad
observed the dny before, found his way
to bis friend's houso. Once there, and
In company with one who could under
stand him, he delivered himself of a
hot condemnation of the cabmen and
the police of London for tbelr Imperti
nence and discourtesy.
His friend asked for a look at the
mirth provoking address, and the
mystery was solved. This was the
entry:
"Ring the bell."
The Russlnn bad with great care
copied, character for character, the
legend of the gatepost, supposing that
It Indicated the bouse and street
Pearson's. n Was Hp to the Limit.
A youup; society woman tella a story
of a very little newsboy who so appre
ciated her kindness to blra at a news
boys' dinner that be went to the extent
of great suffering for her sake. At
least she thinks It was appreciation,
but others bave doubts. At all events,
the young woman who, witb a number
of others, was engaged In serving the
boys, noticed this little boy way off at
one end of the table. Many of bis lar
ger fellows were already bard at work
on the various good things, but this lit
tle fellow bad evidently been neglected.
Clearly here was a case of urgent char
ity, so the amateur waitress flew to bis
aide, and for an hour she saw to It that
he did not lack for anytblug. Plate
after pinto of turkey was literally
showered upon blm. Finally, as she
set another piece of plum pudding In
front of blm, he rolled bis eyes meekly
toward her and said In muffled tones:
"Well, iiiIrs. I kin chew, but I can't
swollcr no more!" New York Sun,
Onlda and the Dnchciiea,
Lord Until more told a friend how he
once took Ouldu In to dinner and bow
disappointed be was to And that the
novelist devoted herself to the dishes
rather than to Intellectual refreshment
He said at last In despair at having
only been able to get "Yes" and "No"
In answer to the different subjects be
Introduced: "I'm afraid I'm singularly;
unfortunate In my choice of topics. Is
there anything we could talk about to
Interest yon?"
To which the chronicler of society's
shortcomings' replied: 'There 19 ona
thing which would Interest me very
much. Tell me about the duchesses. I
have written about them all my Ufa
and never met one yet"
Tbe Donble Letter,
The double letter Is scarcely of use
In any langungo. Sometimes we are
purely Inconsistent Letter must bave

very seldom affects the pronunciation,
Would It not be well to drop tbe
doublo letter altogether? It would
simplify spelling and save time too.
