Aa Odd Sort of Dinner.
Lord Polkonimct, a Poottlsh lord of
session, tisunlly retired to hla coun
try residence during the part of the
year when the court does no btialiiem.
John nngttrt, the Scottish advocate,
equally Idle from a similar cause, went
to shoot, and, happening to pnss Ixinl
P.'a property, he met hla lordship, who
politely Invited John to take, or, nn he
said, to tak', a family dinner with him
self, bis wife and daughter.
John accepted the Invitation, and
they all assembled at the hour of din
ner. There wna a Joint of roasted real
at the head of the table and stewed
Teal at the bottom, real soup tn the
middle, calf's bead on one side of the
soup and veal cutlets on the other,
calf a foot jelly between the soup and
roast veal and calf's brains between
the atewed veal and the soup.
"Noo," said bla lordship in hla own
blunt way, "Mr. nagart, you may very
likely think this an odd sort of dinner,
but ye'U no wonder when you hear the
cause of It We keep nae company.
Mr. Hagort and my daughter bere ca

Queen Margherlta of Italy was anx
ious that her husband, King numbert,
should follow the example of his fa
tber and the fashion common among
elderly Pledinonteae officers and dye
hla balr. Iler pleadings were In vain.
Seeing entreaty waa In vain, the queen
had recourse to stratagem. She caused
a quantity of fine hair dye to be sent
from Furls and put In the klng'a dress
ing room, together with directions for
lta use, making, however, no alluslou
to the subject The king, too, aald
nothing, though be could not fall to aee
the pigments.
Now, the queen had a large white
poodle of which he waa very fond.
What waa ber horror a few days later
to see her pet come running Into ber
room with bis snowy locks all turned
to Jet black. King Umberto bad ex
pended the dyes upon changing the
color of the poodle's halrl From that
day forth the subject of balr dye was
dropped between the royal couple.

The Vampire Bat.
South America, especially Teneauela,
h the home of the vampire bat, tlmt
horrible animal whose blood sucking
propensities are so well known. In
Venezuela the vampire when caught Is
often mnde the subject of an experi
ment that Is aa curious aa It la cruel,
though In connection with auch loath
aome animal aa tbla giant bat the cruel
ty la rather naturally lost eight of by
trie people who have to suffer from lta
ravages.
The vampire la captured In a thick
cloth. It la then taken out and through
lta two extended wlnga nalla are driv
en, securing the animal to a door or a
wooden paling. A cigarette la then
lighted and placed In the bat's mouth.
At once the animal's eyes shine
strangely, and It begins to puff the
smoke In and out with frenxled gasps.
Its actlona being exactly those of the
moat hardened smoker, keeping firm
hold of the cigarette the while between
lta sharp, deadly teeth. When the cig
arette Is nearly finished, a blow on the
bead puts an end to the animal's ' ex
istence. The extraordinary part of the .experi
ment Ilea In the fact that the but does
not at once reject the cigarette, as be Is
of course at liberty to do. There are
many who affirm that the bat really
does enjoy the tobacco. The probabili
ty Is that the animal Is so maddened
by fear and pain that he puffs away
unreaaonlngly and fiercely, his Instinct
telling him that In the properties of the
tobacco lies oblivion.
"Wornsa" aad Llkertr.
In an air In the opera of "Norma"
the theatrical censor went so far as to
cancel the word "Uberta" Glberty) and
substitute for It the word 'lealta"
(loyalty). signor RonconI, the
famous baritone and a great public fa
vorite, having, In the ardor of bla role,
forgotten the above mentioned emenda
tion, waa Imprisoned for three days In
order to refresh bis memory.
Not long after, singing the line In the
"Ellslr d'Amore" describing bow a
peasant enlisted, "Vends la llberta, st
fe soldato" (He sold his liberty to be a
soldier), be waggishly altered It to
"Vends la lealta. si fe soldato." This
variation In the text was received with
lively applause by the public, who al
ways warmly welcomed anything that
savored of political opposition.
The next day the poor singer was
summoned by the head of the police to
rechlve a reprimand for having said
that "loyalty could be add." to which
Bonconl replied by observing that a
few days before he had been taught In
a way he was not likely to forget that
"lealta" ought always to be substitut
ed for "Uberta."-Pletro Orel's "Mod
