oils wounds, he was on thu final skir

he rocolved his last orders to ceaso

As an Indication that this son of a
wounded soldier was horn to succeed In
this world wo mention the fact that tho
money for his education lie made him
self by canvassing and doing whutever
camn to his hands du.4ng vacation and
at other odd hmirs. Raised nn his
father's llttlo farm his life was devoid
of special interest until he was old
enough to be sent to the village sthool.
Here he made rapid progress In his
studies until thirteen years old, when
ho entered Held Institute at Ruldsburg
Pa. He attended this Institution for (
two years with fliich good results that i
the following year ho taught school
himself. Ruaiittlng that sound scholar
ship and prwrfossional training worn
necessary to do good work, he cntorod
the State Normal School at Clarion,
Pa., to prepare himself for college. He
subsequently spent two sessions at
Uucknell University Academy, Lewis
burg, Pa, Since that time ho has been
teacher, a travelling salesman and
also engaged In the lumbering business.
William J. Shaffer is a born Republi
can, his ancestors on both sides boing
Republican. His father's five brothers
were also soldiers and veterans, serving
through the entire civil war, one killed
and four wounded. His mother's two
brothers served aloo in tho civil war.
Thus it will bo seen that William J.
Shaffer is the descendant of patriots.
W.J. is of highly social disposition,
educated, energetic and Industrious,
and his warm, personal frlonc's ho num
