If we are to jufa from what wo road tn our exchanges, It will not make any differenoo to Senator Matthew Stanley Quay who la clcotrd governor Stono, Jenks or Swallow for we hnve road that they am all three credited as bolnjj Quay candidates. The cessation of tho war and the consequent let up in tho demand for fllteh, presage, an increase In the num ber of "cratehin posts'' and curry combs In Indiana county this winter as the buckwheat crop in a hummer. Clearfield 1'uUlic Suirit. Clearfield is woll supplied with "scriitchlnjr poHla"' und tholr will bo no necosslty for an In crease over In that county. Fifty or sixty thousand troops will bo Bent to Cuba, Secretary Altfer nays. They will not be concentrated any more than is necessary. After all the regi ments needed for Cuban service have been desinnt"d about .10,000 troops will be left in camps. Tho camp at Lexing ton, Camp Meade In Pennsylvania, and Camp Black In New York, are to bo abandoned and only tho southern camps will be maintained for winter quarters of the remaining troops. A number of our exchanges are spreading the nows that a Slavonic coal miner was murdorod near this place one night last week by highway rob bers. 'Tis false, brethren. Don't charge our town with more crimes and deviltry than Is really committed here, for the peal facts are enough. Tho Slav still lives and bait no intention of dying from the wounds received. The murder story was furnished tho Pittsburg Time by a correspondent from this place. Under the new game law the hunting season did not open until last Saturday. This makes it entirely too late for good hunting for game of any kind excepting doer. Small game, such as squirrels and pheasants, while somewhat plenti ful from September until the middle of October, are srarco about this season of the year, neither is the weather as fine (or roaming the woods for game. It is very probable thut an effort will be made by sportsmen during the next session of tho Legislature to have the present date of the law changed to a month earlier. Pennsylvania has made a good begin ning toward tho system of forest reser vation, approved by the last legislature. Since June the Forest Commissioner, acting under the provisions of the Act of March 30, 161)7, bas purchased for the State over 39,000 acres at Treas uror's sales of unseated lands, at a price not exceeding taxes and costs. These lands are located as follows: Clinton county, 14,089 acres; Clearfield Co. 15,' 000; Lycoming Co. 1,526; Monroe Co, 1,244; Pike Co. 7,400. In addition there is as much more land In immediate prospect of purchase on very reasonable terms. As yet no attempt has been made to secure lands tn this section of the State. People Ignorant and Uncivilised Can't Speak English Fruit in Abundance. The following letter was written at 'once, Porto Hlco, September 30th, by Walter D. Williams to his parents, and through their kind permission we pub lish the letter: Well, we have landed on the Island at ast. We came ashore on last Sunday, af tor spending II days on board ship. We were all glad to got ashore as It as very uncomfortable on the ship. After landing we had to make a march of about 4 miles to our present amp and ns I ho weather was awful hot that day it wes hard on us. From what I have seen of the Island I think that I will liko it. Our camp Is located In a beautiful valley and we ave a big supply of water but as It is the same water that the city of Ponco uses it is not very good. We have a good spring of water to wash our othes and bathe in, which Is countod big thing In camp. Tho city Is very different from our American cities. The streets are nar row and the buildings are nearly all of stone and brick and have a high stone all around them. Very few of them are higher than ono story, and I don't think that thero are two dozen houses the city that have chimneys on, hilfl glass windows aro hardly known to them. The people Bre a very Ignorant class and are far from being civilized; there arc a good many half breeds among them and there Is hardly one of them that can speak English, so I think by the time we get home that we will be able to speak Spanish. Fruit is very plentiful hero, such as bananas, oranges, cocoanuts and several other kinds, but as we are not used to the climate we have to be careful and not eat to much fruit. It Is raining ere to-day, but that is nothing new for this country as the rainy season is not over yet and It rains every day. It is reported that we are going to start in a day or two to join our regi ment, which It about 30 miles inland, and then we go to San Juan, which will make our march about 80 miles. The Reynoldsvllle boys are all well. I will have to close as it is time for tho mall to go out and I want this let ter to go by the next boat. Respectfully Yours, Walter D. Williams, Ponce. Porto Rico. Co. L, 10th Reg., P. V. I. The indications are that County Superintendent R. B. Toitrlck will have a clear field for re-election next spring. This is as it should be. Mr. Teitriok has proven himself the right man in the right place, and he should by all means be continued In office so long an be consents to serve. Jefferson was one of the counties which received apeoial commendation from the state superintendent for its advancement last year. Tills, together with the effeots of the school training upon the children, is ample evidence thut great progress Is being mode in school facilities within our county. Brockwoyvllle Record. Prof. Tel trick was The Star's choioe for County Superintendent three years ago and we have had no reason to regret it. The year 181)8 has boon one of oxoop tloiiul and abounding prosperity for the Pnstottioe Department of the United States. Tho postal revenues have In' creased at a greater rate than ever be fore, says the New York Sun. It is ex peoted that the total income of the de partmunt will exceed (100,000,000; it has never previously been higher than 182,000,000 in one year. It is, moreover expected thut the postal revenues for tho year will exceed by fully j,00O,0OO the expenditures of the department. There has not been a profit from the revenues of the Poetotlloe Department iu any fUoal your since 1883, when the revenue exceeded the expenditure by about 13.000,000; but tho policy of the government U out to make a profit from poRtoHioe operations but to apply the Increased revenues to Improvements in t' a service, to an enlargement of its ' ',frto rtitiction of rates.
